Over six sessions, "Walking with the Wounded: Mental Health and the Church" was offered to raise awareness of mental health within our faith community and to encourage a more compassionate and informed response. As our first class on this subject, I was grateful for the opportunity to prepare and lead it.
Throughout the sessions, we explored the nature of mental illness and reflected on how faith and mental health can be thoughtfully integrated. One important insight was that mental illness is not a sign of weak faith, but part of the human condition that calls for understanding and care. We learned that our faith community plays a critical role in caring for those who struggle with mental illness. Recognizing that we are all wounded in one way or another, walking with the wounded becomes part of our shared calling—one that requires us to be a supportive community that listens, cares, and walks alongside those in pain. In this light, it is a meaningful expression of the Great Commission—embodying Christ’s love through presence, grace, and compassion. As Scripture reminds us, “Carry each other’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2).
