“I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT”

Passage: Acts 2:14-21

Key verse: 21

NIV

Peter Addresses the Crowd

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!(A) 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.(B)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(C)
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.(D)
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,(E)
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood(F)
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord(G) will be saved.’[a](H)

Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, (A)since it is only the third hour of the day.[a] 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 (B)“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
(C)that I will pour out my Spirit (D)on all flesh,
and your sons and (E)your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
    and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and (F)they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
    blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 (G)the sun shall be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood,
before (H)the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that (I)everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. It was a sight no one had ever seen. The crowd speculated what was taking place. Peter stood up and told them that these men were not drunk off of wine, but that they were filled with the Spirit of God. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we see the amazing acts of God. Peter reminded the people of what was written in the book of Joel. God said that in the last days He would pour out His Spirit on all people. Their sons and daughters would prophecy, their young men would see visions, and their old men would dream dreams. It is God’s will that in the last days He would pour out His Spirit. May we ask the Lord to pour out His Holy Spirit over us and our church.

The last days are not only marked by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Lord would show wonders in the heavens and on the earth. The day of judgment would come. Now is the time to preach the gospel, because as it is written: “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Prayer: Father, we are in the last days. We ask that You would pour out Your Spirit over me, my family, and my church community. May the gospel be declared so that all who call upon your name will be saved.

One Word: “I will pour out My Spirit”
