GOD RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD

Passage: Acts 2:22-36

Key verse: 36

NIV

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth(A) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,(B) which God did among you through him,(C) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;(D) and you, with the help of wicked men,[a] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.(E) 24 But God raised him from the dead,(F) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.(G) 25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
    Because he is at my right hand,
    I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    you will not let your holy one see decay.(H)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[b](I)

29 “Fellow Israelites,(J) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(K) David died and was buried,(L) and his tomb is here(M) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(N) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(O) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(P) and we are all witnesses(Q) of it. 33 Exalted(R) to the right hand of God,(S) he has received from the Father(T) the promised Holy Spirit(U) and has poured out(V) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[c](W)

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(X) and Messiah.”(Y)

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, (A)a man attested to you by God (B)with (C)mighty works and wonders and signs that (D)God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus,[a] (E)delivered up according to (F)the definite plan and (G)foreknowledge of God, (H)you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 (I)God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because (J)it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,

(K)“‘I saw the Lord always before me,
    for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
    my flesh also will dwell (L)in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to (M)Hades,
    (N)or let your (O)Holy One (P)see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about (Q)the patriarch David (R)that he both died and (S)was buried, and (T)his tomb is with us to this day. 30 (U)Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that (V)God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that (W)he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus (X)God raised up, (Y)and of that we all are witnesses. 33 (Z)Being therefore (AA)exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from (AB)the Father (AC)the promise of the Holy Spirit, (AD)he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For (AE)David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,

(AF)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
35     until I make your enemies your footstool.”’

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that (AG)God has made him (AH)both Lord and Christ, this Jesus (AI)whom you crucified.”

Jesus, the Son of God, was accredited by God by miracles, wonders and signs, yet he was handed over to sinful man. They put him to death by nailing him to a cross. It seemed like a tragic defeat. But God raised Jesus from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death. He overcame the power of the grave because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. It is God alone who gives us victory over our enemies and the power of sin, death, and the grave.

Even King David spoke of the resurrection of Christ. He had not died but knew that God would not abandon him to the grave, nor let His Holy One, His beloved Son who was crucified, see decay. King David put his hope in the Lord and prophesied to the resurrection of Christ. Peter declared that God made this Jesus, who the people had crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Prayer: Father, thank you for raising Jesus from the dead and for defeating the power of the grave. Open blinded eyes to see and believe that Jesus is now and forever Lord and King.

One Word: God raised Jesus from the dead and made him Lord and King
