“DO NOT BE AFRAID, KEEP ON SPEAKING”

In Corinth

18 After this, Paul left Athens(A) and went to Corinth.(B) 2 There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla,(C) because Claudius(D) had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, 3 and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them.(E) 4 Every Sabbath(F) he reasoned in the synagogue,(G) trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

5 When Silas(H) and Timothy(I) came from Macedonia,(J) Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.(K) 6 But when they opposed Paul and became abusive,(L) he shook out his clothes in protest(M) and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads!(N) I am innocent of it.(O) From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”(P)

7 Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God.(Q) 8 Crispus,(R) the synagogue leader,(S) and his entire household(T) believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.

9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:(U) “Do not be afraid;(V) keep on speaking, do not be silent. 10 For I am with you,(W) and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.” 11 So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.(X)

5 (G)When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul (H)was occupied with the word, (I)testifying to the Jews that the Christ was (J)Jesus. 6 And when they opposed and reviled him, (K)he shook out his garments and said to them, (L)“Your blood be on your own heads! (M)I am innocent. (N)From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” 7 And he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius (O)Justus, (P)a worshiper of God. His house was next door to the synagogue. 8 (Q)Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together (R)with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized. 9 And the Lord said to Paul (S)one night in (T)a vision, (U)“Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, 10 (V)for I am with you, and (W)no one will attack you to harm you, for (X)I have many in this city who are my people.” 11 And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

Paul went from Athens to Corinth. He met Aquila and Priscilla there and began to work with them as tentmakers. They had suffered because they were Jews, and Claudius the emperor had expelled the Jews from Rome. Paul took this opportunity to help their faith, and he went to the synagogue in Corinth to persuade both Jews and Greeks. Later, Silas and Timothy joined Paul in Corinth. Paul preached that Jesus was the Messiah, but he received such opposition that he left the synagogue in protest and taught at the home of Titius Justus instead.

Paul’s time in Corinth was fruitful. Although he didn’t continue preaching in the synagogue, the synagogue ruler and his whole household were baptized. Many came to believe Jesus. Still, it was a fearful time. The Lord came to Paul in a vision to encourage Paul, saying, “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent.” We might think Paul was a super apostle, immune to fear, but he served God at a time when opposition was constant. Paul listened to God who spoke to him. He overcame fear and stayed in Corinth as a Bible teacher. God protected him and made him fruitful.

Prayer: Lord, help me to listen to your word. Bless me to overcome my fear and bear good gospel fruit.
