I LOOKED FOR HIM AND CALLED HIM
Key verse: 6:3
NIV
She2 I slept but my heart was awake.
Listen! My beloved is knocking:
“Open to me, my sister, my darling,
my dove,(A) my flawless(B) one.(C)
My head is drenched with dew,
my hair with the dampness of the night.”
3 I have taken off my robe—
must I put it on again?
I have washed my feet—
must I soil them again?
4 My beloved thrust his hand through the latch-opening;
my heart began to pound for him.
5 I arose to open for my beloved,
and my hands dripped with myrrh,(D)
my fingers with flowing myrrh,
on the handles of the bolt.
6 I opened for my beloved,(E)
but my beloved had left; he was gone.(F)
My heart sank at his departure.[a]
I looked(G) for him but did not find him.
I called him but he did not answer.
7 The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.(H)
They beat me, they bruised me;
they took away my cloak,
those watchmen of the walls!
8 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you(I)—
if you find my beloved,(J)
what will you tell him?
Tell him I am faint with love.(K)
Friends9 How is your beloved better than others,
most beautiful of women?(L)
How is your beloved better than others,
that you so charge us?
She10 My beloved is radiant and ruddy,
outstanding among ten thousand.(M)
11 His head is purest gold;
his hair is wavy
and black as a raven.
12 His eyes are like doves(N)
by the water streams,
washed in milk,(O)
mounted like jewels.
13 His cheeks(P) are like beds of spice(Q)
yielding perfume.
His lips are like lilies(R)
dripping with myrrh.(S)
14 His arms are rods of gold
set with topaz.
His body is like polished ivory
decorated with lapis lazuli.(T)
15 His legs are pillars of marble
set on bases of pure gold.
His appearance is like Lebanon,(U)
choice as its cedars.
16 His mouth(V) is sweetness itself;
he is altogether lovely.
This is my beloved,(W) this is my friend,
daughters of Jerusalem.(X)
Friends6 Where has your beloved(Y) gone,
most beautiful of women?(Z)
Which way did your beloved turn,
that we may look for him with you?

The Bride Searches for Her Beloved
She2 I slept, but my heart was awake.
A sound! My beloved is (A)knocking.
“Open to me, my (B)sister, my (C)love,
my (D)dove, my (E)perfect one,
for my head is wet with dew,
my (F)locks with the drops of the night.”
3 (G)I had put off my garment;
how could I put it on?
I had (H)bathed my feet;
how could I soil them?
4 My beloved put his hand to the latch,
and my heart was thrilled within me.
5 I arose to open to my beloved,
and my hands dripped with myrrh,
my fingers with (I)liquid myrrh,
on the handles of the bolt.
6 I opened to my beloved,
but my beloved had turned and gone.
My soul failed me when he (J)spoke.
(K)I sought him, but found him not;
(L)I called him, but he gave no answer.
7 (M)The watchmen found me
as they went about in the city;
they beat me, they bruised me,
they took away my veil,
those watchmen of the walls.
8 I (N)adjure you, O (O)daughters of Jerusalem,
if you find my beloved,
that you tell him
(P)I am sick with love.
Others9 What is your beloved more than another beloved,
O (Q)most beautiful among women?
What is your beloved more than another beloved,
that you thus (R)adjure us?
The Bride Praises Her Beloved
She10 My beloved is radiant and (S)ruddy,
(T)distinguished among ten thousand.
11 His head is the finest gold;
(U)his locks are wavy,
black as a raven.
12 His (V)eyes are like doves
beside streams of water,
bathed in milk,
sitting beside a full pool.[a]
13 His (W)cheeks are like (X)beds of spices,
mounds of sweet-smelling herbs.
His lips are (Y)lilies,
dripping (Z)liquid myrrh.
14 His arms are rods of gold,
set with (AA)jewels.
His body is polished ivory,[b]
bedecked with (AB)sapphires.[c]
15 His legs are alabaster columns,
set on bases of gold.
His appearance is like (AC)Lebanon,
choice as the cedars.
16 His (AD)mouth[d] is most sweet,
and he is altogether desirable.
This is my beloved and this is my friend,
O (AE)daughters of Jerusalem.
Others6 Where has your beloved gone,
O (AF)most beautiful among women?
Where has your beloved turned,
that we may seek him with you?

She2 My beloved has gone down to his (AG)garden
to (AH)the beds of spices,
to (AI)graze[e] in the gardens
and to gather (AJ)lilies.
3 (AK)I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine;

The Shulamite woman recalls a time (or her dream) when she had lost the king. The king comes back late at night drenched wet. He knocks on her door, but she hesitates to get out of her warm bed to greet him. Her attitude has considerably changed from that of chapter 2. She has lost her first love and prefers a little physical comfort over her beloved king.
When she comes back to her senses and goes to open the door, she realizes the king is gone, and her heart sinks. She goes out to look for him and is treated like a street woman (5:7). As she is desperately looking for the king, she remembers his great qualities (5:1
-16).
Then she realizes that the king is not gone, but in the garden (4:16). He is waiting for her in their personal sacred garden. This story is a metaphor for our relationship with the Lord. Sometimes our hearts may turn lukewarm, losing our first love for the Lord (Rev 2:4). We may get lost in the burdens of reality, and we may neglect our relationship with the Lord. But you don’t need to search far when your heart becomes weary and desperate. When you remember your love for the Lord, he is already there waiting for you.
Prayer: Father, thank you for always being faithful. Help me never to lose you but always make you as the priority of my life.
One Word: Remain in his love.
