JESUS PROMISES THE HOLY SPIRIT

Passage: John 14:15-31

Key verse: 16,17a

NIV

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(A) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(B) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(C) The world cannot accept him,(D) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(E) I will come to you.(F) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(G) Because I live, you also will live.(H) 20 On that day(I) you will realize that I am in my Father,(J) and you are in me, and I am in you.(K) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(L) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(M) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas(N) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(O)

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(P) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(Q) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(R)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(S) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(T) will teach you all things(U) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(V) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(W) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(X) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(Y) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(Z) for the Father is greater than I.(AA) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(AB) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(AC) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(AD)

“Come now; let us leave.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (A)“If you love me, you will (B)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (C)Helper,[a] to be with you forever, 17 even (D)the Spirit of truth, (E)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (F)will be[b] in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (G)I will come to you. 19 (H)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but (I)you will see me. (J)Because I live, you also will live. 20 (K)In that day you will know that (L)I am in my Father, and (M)you in me, and (N)I in you. 21 (O)Whoever has my commandments and (P)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And (Q)he who loves me (R)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and (S)manifest myself to him.” 22 (T)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it (U)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, (V)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and (W)we will come to him and (X)make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And (Y)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (Z)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (AA)whom the Father will send in my name, (AB)he will teach you all things and (AC)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (AD)Peace I leave with you; (AE)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. (AF)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (AG)let them be afraid. 28 (AH)You heard me say to you, (AI)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (AJ)am going to the Father, for (AK)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (AL)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (AM)the ruler of this world is coming. (AN)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (AO)as the Father has commanded me, (AP)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

1. Another advocate (15-24) Those who love Jesus are told to keep his commands. If we keep his commands, we are promised a new advocate- the spirit of truth. Jesus was about to leave his disciples. They would no longer see him or be with him. But he would not leave them as orphans. He would send them the Holy Spirit. What would the Holy Spirit do? Through it, they would realize that Jesus is in the Father, that the Father is in him, and that Jesus was in the disciples. The same is true of us today. Jesus is in us when we love and obey him. We can show we love Jesus by keeping his commands. 2. Jesus gives us peace (25-31) Jesus said many things to his disciples, especially as he got closer to leaving them. But the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father, would remind them of all these things. Because of Jesus' promise, they need not be afraid. Rather, they could have peace. Even though they had reason to fear- for the prince of this world (Satan) was coming- they could have peace.

Prayer: Lord, send the Holy Spirit to us and give us Jesus' peace.

One Word: Jesus gives us peace
