JESUS GIVES LIFE TO A DEAD GIRL

Passage: Luke 8:49-56

Key verse: 50

NIV

49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(A) “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”

50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James,(B) and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning(C) for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”(D)

53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”(E) 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.(F)

1. "Don't bother the teacher anymore." (49-50) On his way to Jairus' house to heal his daughter, Jesus lingered to heal and speak with a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years. Jesus' lingering had seemingly tragic consequences for Jairus. For as Jesus was still speaking with the woman, some men came and told Jairus, "Your daughter is dead. Don't bother the teacher anymore." To these men, Jesus was merely a teacher who had miraculous power to heal. But he certainly had no power once death had taken hold. 2. "Don't be afraid; just believe." (51-56) Jairus must have been crestfallen. His daughter had just died! But Jesus immediately planted resurrection faith in him. "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed." Thus strengthened in faith, they went to his house. Many people were there crying. But they started laughing when Jesus told them she was but asleep. After putting out the unbelievers, Jesus went in and raised the dead girl to life.

Prayer: Father, help me not get discouraged in this life. When I look at Jesus, help me to not be afraid, but just believe.

One Word: Don't be afraid; just believe!
