Passage: Luke 8:22-25

Key verse: 25a

NIV

Jesus Calms the Storm(A)(B)

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(C) we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked(D) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(E) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

22 (A)One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of (B)the lake.” So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on (C)the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and (D)rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, (E)and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they (F)were afraid, and they (G)marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that (H)he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

1. "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" (22-24a) Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross over to the other side of the lake. Jesus was very tired, and fell asleep in the boat. A severe storm suddenly came up on the lake, and the boat was being swamped. Even these experienced fishermen knew they were in great danger. So, they woke Jesus up and exclaimed, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" Many of the disciples were very experienced steering boats on the lake. But even they were afraid. The storm must have been something! 2. Jesus calms the storm (24b-25) What did Jesus do? He got up, rebuked the wind and the waves, and made the lake calm again. Jesus asked his disciples, "Where is your faith?" Jesus didn't keep the storm from brewing. Sometimes new Christians are shocked when they find out that their lives can still be filled with storms. Jesus didn't tell his worried disciples, "Row harder!" When storms come up, Jesus reminds us to check where our faith is. Our faith should be in Jesus, who calms the storms.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for Jesus. When storms come into my life, help me to check my faith. Help me to have faith in Jesus who calms the storms of our lives.

One Word: Where is your faith?
