HE WAS TRANSFIGURED BEFORE THEM

9 And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come(A) with power.”(B)

2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John(E) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white,(F) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(G) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:(H) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”(I)

8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone(J) what they had seen until the Son of Man(K) had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man(L) must suffer much(M) and be rejected?(N) 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come,(O) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

9 (O)And as they were coming down the mountain, (P)he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, (Q)until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 (R)So they kept the matter to themselves, (S)questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say (T)that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first (U)to restore all things. And (V)how is it written of the Son of Man that he should (W)suffer many things and (X)be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and (Y)they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

1. The transfigured Jesus (1-4)

Jesus took his three top disciples up the mountain. He gave them a preview of his resurrection and of his glorious heavenly image. Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, talked with him. They talked with him about his approaching death on the cross and encouraged him to be faithful to God's mission (Lk 9:3

,31).

2. Listen to him (5-8)

Peter and the others were frightened. He blurted out their real desire for ease and glory (5). Then a cloud enveloped them. God himself proclaimed Jesus as his Son, whom he loved, and commanded the disciples and us to 'listen to him.'

3. Coming down the mountain (9-13)

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus again spoke of his resurrection, and of his suffering and death. John the Baptist, a type of Elijah, had already suffered and had been killed by Herod.

Prayer: Lord, help me to listen to you, even when what you say is not what I like to hear.

One Word: Remember his glory; obey him
