“THIS IS MY SON, WHOM I LOVE”

The Transfiguration(C)(D)

2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John(E) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white,(F) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(G) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:(H) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”(I)

8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone(J) what they had seen until the Son of Man(K) had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man(L) must suffer much(M) and be rejected?(N) 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come,(O) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

9 (O)And as they were coming down the mountain, (P)he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, (Q)until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 (R)So they kept the matter to themselves, (S)questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say (T)that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first (U)to restore all things. And (V)how is it written of the Son of Man that he should (W)suffer many things and (X)be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and (Y)they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

Jesus took Peter, James and John with him up a high mountain where he was transfigured before them. his clothes became dazzling white and the glory of God radiated from him. Moses and Elijah appeared and were talking with him. The disciples were surrounded by the presence of God and they heard his voice declare, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” All of these things worked to reassure the disciples and to help them accept the suffering that was coming. They had confessed Jesus to be the Messiah and now God himself confirmed the deity of Christ. They saw firsthand the glory that Jesus had before he came into the world and the glory that he was returning to after his death and resurrection. They saw how Jesus satisfied the Law and the Prophets through the witness of Moses and Elijah. God himself declared his love for Jesus and the truth of his words. The disciples didn’t like hearing about his suffering and the cross, but this was God’s will for the Son he loved. The disciples also saw the wonderous glory that awaits all those whose trust is in the Lord. Those who belong to Jesus will live forever with him in glory. Peter’s mistake was to speak his own thoughts instead of listening to Jesus. This is our temptation as well. We are to watch, observe, and listen to Jesus by carefully considering his words. Soon, the disciples would understand the full meaning of his death and resurrection.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, show us your glory.
