JESUS WAS ARRESTED

Passage: Mark 14:43-52

Key verse: 14:49

NIV

Jesus Arrested(A)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(D) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(E) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(F)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (A)And immediately, while he was still speaking, (B)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, (C)“Rabbi!” And he (D)kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his (E)sword and struck the servant[a] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 (F)Day after day I was with you in the temple (G)teaching, and you did not seize me. But (H)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 (I)And they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but (J)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

First, Jesus betrayed by a kiss (43-47). Just as Jesus roused his three top disciples to meet his betrayer, Judas arrived with a heavily armed crowd. Judas gave the prearranged sign, approached Jesus, said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him. At once, Jesus was arrested. Violence ensued when someone drew a sword (Peter, according to John's gospel) and struck at the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. Second, '...the Scripture must be fulfilled' (48-52). Although the crowd was armed, and they had fulfilled their mission of arresting Jesus, Jesus rebuked the crowd. He had taught in the open and they had not touched him. Now, at night, they came with him armed to the teeth as if he were leading a rebellion. Jesus showed them it was not the crowd that was in control of the situation, but Jesus. Jesus allowed himself to be arrested in obedience to his Father. His arrest fulfilled Scripture (Isa 53:7-12). At his arrest, all of his disciples deserted him, as Jesus had prophesied.

Prayer: Lord, praise Jesus, who allowed himself to be arrested and that through this, fulfilled Scripture.

One Word: The Scripture must be fulfilled
