JESUS' ARREST

Passage: Mark 14:43-52

Key verse: 49b

NIV

Jesus Arrested(A)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(D) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(E) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(F)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (A)And immediately, while he was still speaking, (B)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, (C)“Rabbi!” And he (D)kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his (E)sword and struck the servant[a] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 (F)Day after day I was with you in the temple (G)teaching, and you did not seize me. But (H)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 (I)And they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but (J)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

1. Judas, one of the Twelve (43-45)

Judas was a disciple who was trained with the rest, but he betrayed Jesus for money. He seemed to have no compunction of conscience--until the deed was over. Perhaps he was motivated by disappointment that Jesus showed no interest in political power. But most likely he was captured by greed.

2. The Scriptures must be fulfilled (46-49)

When the men seized Jesus, Peter drew his sword and cut off a man's ear. Jesus restrained his disciples. He rebuked his captors for their cowardice. Then he taught them that God is in control of the events of history, even though it seems that evil men are in control. At this point, the disciples all fled.

3. The young man who fled (5

-52)

Some say that this young man who fled was the boy Mark. Perhaps this is true because the author is the only one who would remember this detail.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to follow the Scriptures carefully in times of stress. Help me not to betray Jesus.

One Word: The Scriptures must be fulfilled
