JESUS RAISES THE DEAD GIRL

Passage: Mark 5:35-43

Key verse: 36

NIV

35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(A) “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”

36 Overhearing[a] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.(B) 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader,(C) Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”(D) 40 But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand(E) and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).(F) 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this,(G) and told them to give her something to eat.

While Jesus was still talking to the woman who had been healed from 12 years of suffering, some people came to Jairus to tell him his daughter had died. They said, “Why bother the teacher anymore?” Death was the line drawn in their minds; once crossed, there was no more hope.

However, Jesus told Jairus not to be afraid and just believe. Jairus believed if only Jesus had placed his hands on his daughter, she would be healed (23). The change of circumstance should not affect his faith. his faith in Jesus' power of healing was precious. And now Jesus wanted to teach him that even the power of death could not hinder Jesus' work. Do you put a box around what you believe Jesus can do for you? Jesus tells you to “Just Believe.”

Jairus' house was full of commotion and wailing. But Jesus drove out the funeral crowd, took the girl by the hand, and raised her as if waking her up from sleep. As Jairus decided to just believe in Jesus, overcoming the limit he and others previously had in their minds, he experienced Jesus' power to give life.

Prayer: Father, thank you for helping me overcome fear as I come to know who you are. Please help me to trust you in all circumstances and grow to know you better each day.

One Word: Don't be afraid; Just believe.
