FINDING PEACE AND FREEDOM IN JESUS

Passage: Mark 5:21-34

Key verse: 34

NIV

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(A)

21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake,(B) a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.(C) 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders,(D) named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on(E) her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.

A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(F) for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes,(G) I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.(H)

30 At once Jesus realized that power(I) had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’

32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(J) Go in peace(K) and be freed from your suffering.”

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 (A)Then came one of (B)the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and (C)lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him.

And a great crowd followed him and (D)thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman (E)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 (F)And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her (G)disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that (H)power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, (I)your faith has made you well; (J)go in peace, and be healed of your (K)disease.”

Jesus was going to Jairus' house upon an urgent request. The crowd was also there to see Jesus. Among them was a woman who had suffered from a bleeding issue for twelve years. She spent all she had looking for a cure, but no doctor could help her. When she heard about Jesus, she found her last hope of healing in him. Being ceremonially unclean (Leviticus 15:25), she could not come to him openly. Instead, she snuck behind him and touched his cloak.

Immediately, the woman knew she was freed from suffering (29). There was no one paying attention to her. The woman probably wanted to disappear into the crowd. But Jesus noticed and looked for the one who took his power. Jesus made her come out and confess the grace she had received. Then he blessed her faith and sent her with peace and freedom (34). While the woman was seeking physical healing, Jesus wanted to get to know her personally and to restore her as a precious child of God.

Have you received Jesus' grace and experienced his power? Remain in Jesus and enjoy the peace and freedom he gives.

Prayer: Father, I find my peace as I know you healed me and looked upon me with your grace. Help me to grow in my love relationship with you.

One Word: Jesus sets us free.
