THE RISEN JESUS APPEARS TO HIS DISCIPLES

Passage: Luke 24:36-53

Key verse: 47

NIV

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(A)

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(B) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see;(C) a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.(D)

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:(E) Everything must be fulfilled(F) that is written about me in the Law of Moses,(G) the Prophets(H) and the Psalms.”(I)

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer(J) and rise from the dead on the third day,(K) 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name(L) to all nations,(M) beginning at Jerusalem.(N) 48 You are witnesses(O) of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised;(P) but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension of Jesus

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany,(Q) he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.(R) 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple,(S) praising God.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 As they were talking about these things, (A)Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were (B)startled and (C)frightened and (D)thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. (E)Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, (F)he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved (G)for joy and were marveling, (H)he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[a] 43 and he took it and ate before them.

44 Then he said to them, (I)“These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, (J)that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then (K)he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus (L)it is written, (M)that the Christ should suffer and on the third day (N)rise from the dead, 47 and that (O)repentance for[b] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed (P)in his name (Q)to all nations, (R)beginning from Jerusalem. 48 (S)You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending (T)the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you (U)are clothed with (V)power (W)from on high.”

The Ascension

50 And (X)he led them out as far as (Y)Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, (Z)he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they (AA)worshiped him and (AB)returned to Jerusalem (AC)with great joy, 53 and (AD)were continually in the temple (AE)blessing God.

1. Look at my hands and feet (36-43) The Risen Christ appeared to his disciples as they were wondering about all the reports about him. Fear controlled them, and they mistook the Risen Jesus for a ghost. To help them, Jesus asked them why they were so afraid and doubtful. Then he showed them the evidence of his nail-pierced hands and feet. No one else died on a cross for them. He let them touch him and see he was alive. Then he ate some fish. Jesus understands our fears and meets us where we are and helps us to believe. 2. You are witnesses of these things (44-53) Next, Jesus helped them to remember his promises and the Scripture. Then, their minds were opened, and Jesus helped the disciples to understand the meaning of his death and resurrection. It was God's will to impart the forgiveness of sins to all people of all nations who turn to him in repentance. Now, the disciples must be his witnesses, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Lastly, Jesus ascended into heaven, giving the disciples living hope to meet Him again in his kingdom. Real joy filled their hearts, and they could praise God in his temple.

Prayer: Lord, open my mind to understand your gospel plan and empower me to be your witness.

One Word: Preach the forgiveness of sins to all nations
