On the Road to Emmaus
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem.(A) 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;(B) 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.(C)
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas,(D) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,”(E) they replied. “He was a prophet,(F) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers(G) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.(H) And what is more, it is the third day(I) since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us.(J) They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”(K)
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”(L) 27 And beginning with Moses(M) and all the Prophets,(N) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(O)

On the Road to Emmaus
13 That very day (A)two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 (B)But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was (C)a prophet (D)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and (E)how our chief priests and (F)rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was (G)the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now (H)the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. (I)They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and (J)when they did not find his body, they came back saying that (K)they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 (L)Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (M)Was it not necessary that (N)the Christ should suffer these things and enter into (O)his glory?” 27 And (P)beginning with (Q)Moses and (R)all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

1. Jesus walked with them (13-18)
The 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus knew everything about Jesus' life and death. They even knew about the empty tomb. But they did not believe, so when Jesus joined them in their sorrowful walk, they could not recognize him.
2. Jesus taught them the Scriptures (19-27)
First, Jesus listened to them. They told him about Jesus' powerful words and deeds, and how they had put their hope in him to redeem Israel. They told how the religious leaders had handed him over to be crucified, and how the women had discovered the empty tomb and heard the angel's message. Then Jesus rebuked them for their unbelief. He taught them from the Bible the things concerning himself. He began with Genesis and went through all the Prophets. But still they did not recognize him.
Prayer: Lord, when my heart is dull and slow because of my unbelief, come and show me the things concerning yourself in the Bible. Open my heart to your word.
One Word: The Bible tells about Jesus
