THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S

Psalm 24
Of David. A psalm.

1 The earth is the Lord’s,(A) and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;(B)
2 for he founded it on the seas
    and established it on the waters.(C)

3 Who may ascend the mountain(D) of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?(E)
4 The one who has clean hands(F) and a pure heart,(G)
    who does not trust in an idol(H)
    or swear by a false god.[a]

5 They will receive blessing(I) from the Lord
    and vindication(J) from God their Savior.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek your face,(K) God of Jacob.[b][c]

7 Lift up your heads, you gates;(L)
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King(M) of glory(N) may come in.(O)
8 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,(P)
    the Lord mighty in battle.(Q)
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty(R)—
    he is the King of glory.

A Psalm of David.

24 (A)The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,[a]
    the world and those who dwell therein,
2 for he has (B)founded it upon (C)the seas
    and established it upon the rivers.

3 (D)Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
    And who shall stand in his (E)holy place?
4 (F)He who has (G)clean hands and (H)a pure heart,
    who does not (I)lift up his soul to (J)what is false
    and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive (K)blessing from the Lord
    and (L)righteousness from (M)the God of his salvation.
6 Such is (N)the generation of those who seek him,

1. Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? (1-6)

The Lord is the Creator and Owner of all things. All his creatures long to know him and dwell in his presence. Who may dwell with him? Those who seek him with pure hearts and clean hands, who repent of their spirit of compromise (which is idolatry), and who love the truth may come and stand before him to receive his forgiveness and blessing.

2. Lift up your heads, O you gates (7-1

)

The gates guard the way into the city--or into the heart. The Psalmist addresses the gates. Each person decides when and for whom to open the gates of his heart. We must not open the gates for Satan, but for the King of glory. Then he will come in. Who is the king of glory? He is the Lord who gives victory. He is the Lord who brings glory and honor with him.

Prayer: Lord, cleanse my hands and heart by the precious blood of Jesus. Help me to guard the gates of my heart, and open them only for Jesus, the King of glory.
