THE GOOD NEWS

Passage: Acts 13:32-41

Key verse: 38

NIV

32 “We tell you the good news:(A) What God promised our ancestors(B) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(C) As it is written in the second Psalm:

“‘You are my son;
    today I have become your father.’[a](D)

34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,

“‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’[b](E)

35 So it is also stated elsewhere:

“‘You will not let your holy one see decay.’[c](F)

36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(G) he was buried with his ancestors(H) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(I) did not see decay.

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(J) 39 Through him everyone who believes(K) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(L) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

41 “‘Look, you scoffers,
    wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
    that you would never believe,
    even if someone told you.’[d](M)

32 And we bring you the good news (A)that what God promised to the fathers, 33 (B)this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm,

(C)“‘You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you.’

34 And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, (D)(E)no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,

“‘I will give you (F)the holy and sure blessings of David.’

35 Therefore he says also in another psalm,

(G)“‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’

36 For David, after he had (H)served the purpose of God in his own generation, (I)fell asleep and (J)was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37 but he whom (K)God raised up did not see corruption. 38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, (L)that through this man (M)forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and by him (N)everyone who believes is freed[a] from everything (O)from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. 40 Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:

41 (P)“‘Look, you scoffers,
    be astounded and perish;
for I am doing a work in your days,
    a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’”

1. God fulfilled his promise (32-37)

The resurrection of Jesus is attested by Scripture. God keeps his promises. Psalm 2 looks forward to the victory of the Son of God. In this Psalm, the Anointed King is proclaimed Son of God. By his resurrection, Jesus was proclaimed with power to be the Son of God (Ro 1:4). David longed for resurrection, and God promised him, 'You will not let your Holy One see decay.' David served his own generation, died and was buried. However, God did not forget his promise. He raised Jesus, David's descendant, from the dead. By his resurrection, Jesus conquered death and decay.

2. Forgiveness of sins through Jesus (38-41)

The resurrection of Jesus confirms him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29). Through faith in Jesus' shed blood, we have forgiveness of sins. We must believe and not scoff at the amazing thing that God has done, for by faith in the risen Jesus we are justified--made right with God. Scoffers will wonder and perish.

Prayer: Lord, help me to serve my times with resurrection faith, as David did.

One Word: Good news of the resurrection
