Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

25 When Barnabas(A) and Saul had finished their mission,(B) they returned from[a] Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.(C) 13 1 Now in the church at Antioch(D) there were prophets(E) and teachers:(F) Barnabas,(G) Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,(H) Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod(I) the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,(J) “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work(K) to which I have called them.”(L) 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them(M) and sent them off.(N)

On Cyprus

4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit,(O) went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.(P) 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God(Q) in the Jewish synagogues.(R) John(S) was with them as their helper.

6 They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer(T) and false prophet(U) named Bar-Jesus, 7 who was an attendant of the proconsul,(V) Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer(W) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul(X) from the faith.(Y) 9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,(Z) looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil(AA) and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?(AB) 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you.(AC) You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”(AD)

Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul(AE) saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

4 So, being sent out (L)by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God (M)in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had (N)John to (O)assist them. 6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain (P)magician, (Q)a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. 7 He was with (R)the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the (S)magician (for that is the meaning of his name) (T)opposed them, seeking to turn (U)the proconsul away from the faith. 9 But Saul, who was also called Paul, (V)filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, “You (W)son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and (X)villainy, will you not stop (Y)making crooked (Z)the straight paths of the Lord? 11 And now, behold, (AA)the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking (AB)people to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at (AC)the teaching of the Lord.

1. An obedient church (12:25-13:3)

Barnabas and Saul finished their mission (11:30) and returned to Antioch. They took Barnabas' cousin, John Mark, with them. Then, while the godly leaders in Antioch were worshiping God and praying, the Holy Spirit directed them to send out missionaries. So, they commissioned and sent out Barnabas and Saul, their best Bible teachers, to challenge the stronghold of Satan on the front line of world mission.

2. To Cyprus (4-12)

Barnabas and Saul sailed to Cyprus, taking John Mark as their assistant. Barnabas was the team leader. They traveled throughout the island, preaching in synagogues, until they arrived in Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer named Elymas. He worked for Sergius Paulus, the proconsul. The proconsul wanted to hear the word of God, so he sent for them. When Elymas tried to block their Bible study, Saul rebuked him strongly. The Lord struck Elymas blind. That was enough for the proconsul--he became a believer. Saul became Paul.

Prayer: Lord, give me faith and courage to challenge even the strongholds of Satan.
