LOVE FOR GOD AND LOVE FOR NEIGHBOR

The Parable of the Good Samaritan(A)

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(B)

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a];(C) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”(D)

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”(E)

29 But he wanted to justify himself,(F) so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.(G) 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan,(H) as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

1. What must I do? (25-29) An expert of the law stood up to test Jesus, asking him "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" His question was rooted in self-righteousness. He truly believed that he had loved God with all his heart, soul, strength, and mind. He also believed that he had loved his neighbor as himself. But when Jesus responded, "Do this and you will live", the man was not satisfied. It turns out that his view of 'neighbor' was far narrower than the Lord's. It was evidence that his love for God was not what he thought it was. Who we accept as our neighbor and how we love them is directly related to our love for God and it is a sign of whether or not we have really inherited eternal life. 2. "Go and do likewise" (3 -37) In the Lord's parable, the priest and the Levite saw the wounded man and passed him by. They knew God's word, but did not share his heart. The Lord's compassion for those in need is captured by the Samaritan whose love knew no boundaries or limits. The Samaritan's love shattered the barriers of race as he surrendered his time, safety, and possessions to help the man. This is the heart of anyone who loves God with their entire being. The Lord commands us to be like the Samaritan. We are to demonstrate the tender love and mercy of the Lord by having compassion on whoever is in need.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, give us hearts like yours.
