MY HELP COMES FROM THE LORD

Passage: Psalms 121:1-8

Key verse: 7

NIV

Psalm 121
A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven(A) and earth.(B)

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches(C) over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over(D) you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun(E) will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm(F)
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.(G)

Sometimes we feel helpless and afraid. We look ahead and the journey looks long or difficult. The psalmist asked, “Where does my help come from?” And he answers his own question: “My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” God made it all. He owns and controls it. He is Almighty.

God is great and powerful. But he is also more loving than any parent or shepherd. The words “watches over you” are repeated many times. To watch over means to protect, guard, or keep. The LORD watches over his people. He will not let our foot slip. He is vigilant, not sleepy. The LORD protects us from harm, day and night. He is our shade from the sun. He watches over our lives. He watches over our steps now and forever.

Prayer: LORD, when I feel afraid or helpless, help me to remember that you are watching over me. You are my help, my Shepherd, my Father in heaven. May my confidence, security and peace be in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

One Word: The LORD is my help and protection
