The New Testament reveals that this Psalm is God’s decree to Christ, granting him the highest position at his right hand as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Though David, the author, was the King of Israel, he knew that the coming Messiah was greater than him and called him “Lord”. Though Jesus suffered and was put to death, God raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in heaven (1).
Christ reigns from heaven while the spiritual battle continues in this world. We may be confident that Jesus’ rule will extend to the ends of the earth, even while we are in the midst of enemies (2). We are Jesus’ willing troops in the spiritual battle (3). Though we look humble, we are clothed with holy splendor because of Jesus’ grace.
This Psalm also reveals that Jesus is more than a king; he is our high priest who always lives to intercede for us (4, Heb 6:2
). Finally, Jesus will come again as judge of the whole earth (5-7).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for winning the victory for me on the cross. Help me be a willing spiritual soldier for you, confident of your final victory.
One Word: Jesus reigns from God’s right hand.
