PRAISE THE LORD, OUR DELIVERER

Passage: Psalms 105:24-45

Key verse: 26

NIV

24 The Lord made his people very fruitful;
    he made them too numerous(A) for their foes,
25 whose hearts he turned(B) to hate his people,
    to conspire(C) against his servants.
26 He sent Moses(D) his servant,
    and Aaron,(E) whom he had chosen.(F)
27 They performed(G) his signs(H) among them,
    his wonders(I) in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness(J) and made the land dark—
    for had they not rebelled against(K) his words?
29 He turned their waters into blood,(L)
    causing their fish to die.(M)
30 Their land teemed with frogs,(N)
    which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers.
31 He spoke,(O) and there came swarms of flies,(P)
    and gnats(Q) throughout their country.
32 He turned their rain into hail,(R)
    with lightning throughout their land;
33 he struck down their vines(S) and fig trees(T)
    and shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke,(U) and the locusts came,(V)
    grasshoppers(W) without number;(X)
35 they ate up every green thing in their land,
    ate up the produce of their soil.
36 Then he struck down all the firstborn(Y) in their land,
    the firstfruits of all their manhood.
37 He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold,(Z)
    and from among their tribes no one faltered.
38 Egypt was glad when they left,
    because dread of Israel(AA) had fallen on them.

39 He spread out a cloud(AB) as a covering,
    and a fire to give light at night.(AC)
40 They asked,(AD) and he brought them quail;(AE)
    he fed them well with the bread of heaven.(AF)
41 He opened the rock,(AG) and water gushed out;
    it flowed like a river in the desert.

42 For he remembered his holy promise(AH)
    given to his servant Abraham.
43 He brought out his people with rejoicing,(AI)
    his chosen ones with shouts of joy;
44 he gave them the lands of the nations,(AJ)
    and they fell heir to what others had toiled(AK) for—
45 that they might keep his precepts
    and observe his laws.(AL)

Praise the Lord.[a](AM)

24 And the Lord (A)made his people very fruitful
    and made them stronger than their foes.
25 He (B)turned their hearts to hate his people,
    to (C)deal craftily with his servants.

26 He (D)sent Moses, his servant,
    and Aaron, (E)whom he had chosen.
27 (F)They performed his signs among them
    and miracles in (G)the land of Ham.
28 He (H)sent darkness, and made the land dark;
    they (I)did not rebel[a] against his words.
29 He turned their waters into blood
    and (J)caused their fish to die.
30 Their land swarmed with frogs,
    even in (K)the chambers of their kings.
31 He spoke, and there came (L)swarms of flies,
    (M)and gnats throughout their country.
32 He gave them hail for rain,
    and fiery (N)lightning bolts through their land.
33 He struck down their vines and fig trees,
    and (O)shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke, and the (P)locusts came,
    young locusts without number,
35 which devoured all the vegetation in their land
    and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He (Q)struck down all the firstborn in their land,
    (R)the firstfruits of all their strength.

37 Then he brought out Israel with (S)silver and gold,
    and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.
38 (T)Egypt was glad when they departed,
    for (U)dread of them had fallen upon it.

39 He (V)spread a cloud for a covering,
    and fire to give light by night.
40 (W)They asked, and he (X)brought quail,
    and gave them (Y)bread from heaven in abundance.
41 He opened the rock, and (Z)water gushed out;
    it flowed through (AA)the desert like a river.
42 For he (AB)remembered his holy promise,
    and (AC)Abraham, his servant.

43 So he brought his people out with joy,
    his (AD)chosen ones with (AE)singing.
44 And he (AF)gave them the lands of the nations,
    and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples' toil,
45 that they might (AG)keep his statutes
    and (AH)observe his laws.
(AI)Praise the Lord!

The earlier part of this psalm reviewed Genesis from Abraham to Joseph. This part reviews Exodus. Moses was the great deliverer of the LORD’s people from their slavery in Egypt. God’s people became numerous in Egypt, and they were hated and enslaved. God raised up Moses to deliver them through ten devastating plagues of judgment on Egypt. The psalmist retells 8 of the 1

plagues (Can you find the missing ones?).

After the 1

th plague on the firstborn, God brought the Israelites out with silver and gold. Egypt was glad to let them leave. (Note: the missing plagues were on livestock and boils.)

God guided them with cloud and fire. God fed them quail and manna from heaven. God gave them water from a rock. God did all this to keep his covenant promise to Abraham and his descendants. God gave them great joy and lands belonging to others. God only wanted them to keep his laws and live as his faithful covenant people.

Prayer: LORD God, you are our Deliverer. You delivered your people Israel out of slavery in Egypt with a mighty hand through your servant Moses. Thank you for your deliverance from sin, death, and the devil through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

One Word: Praise the LORD, our Deliverer
