THE DAY OF THE LORD
Key verse: 20
NIV
The Day of the Lord
6 You, Lord, have abandoned(C) your people,
the descendants of Jacob.(D)
They are full of superstitions from the East;
they practice divination(E) like the Philistines(F)
and embrace(G) pagan customs.(H)
7 Their land is full of silver and gold;(I)
there is no end to their treasures.(J)
Their land is full of horses;(K)
there is no end to their chariots.(L)
8 Their land is full of idols;(M)
they bow down(N) to the work of their hands,(O)
to what their fingers(P) have made.
9 So people will be brought low(Q)
and everyone humbled(R)—
do not forgive them.[a](S)
10 Go into the rocks, hide(T) in the ground
from the fearful presence of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty!(U)
11 The eyes of the arrogant(V) will be humbled(W)
and human pride(X) brought low;(Y)
the Lord alone will be exalted(Z) in that day.(AA)
12 The Lord Almighty has a day(AB) in store
for all the proud(AC) and lofty,(AD)
for all that is exalted(AE)
(and they will be humbled),(AF)
13 for all the cedars of Lebanon,(AG) tall and lofty,(AH)
and all the oaks of Bashan,(AI)
14 for all the towering mountains
and all the high hills,(AJ)
15 for every lofty tower(AK)
and every fortified wall,(AL)
16 for every trading ship[b](AM)
and every stately vessel.
17 The arrogance of man will be brought low(AN)
and human pride humbled;(AO)
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,(AP)
18 and the idols(AQ) will totally disappear.(AR)
19 People will flee to caves(AS) in the rocks
and to holes in the ground(AT)
from the fearful presence(AU) of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty,(AV)
when he rises to shake the earth.(AW)
20 In that day(AX) people will throw away
to the moles and bats(AY)
their idols of silver and idols of gold,(AZ)
which they made to worship.(BA)
21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks(BB)
and to the overhanging crags
from the fearful presence of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty,(BC)
when he rises(BD) to shake the earth.(BE)

5 O house of Jacob,
come, let us walk
in (A)the light of the Lord.
The Day of the Lord
6 For you have rejected your people,
the house of Jacob,
because they are full of things (B)from the east
and (C)of fortune-tellers (D)like the Philistines,
and they (E)strike hands with the children of foreigners.
7 Their land is (F)filled with silver and gold,
and there is no end to their treasures;
their land is (G)filled with horses,
and there is no end to their chariots.
8 Their land is (H)filled with idols;
they bow down to (I)the work of their hands,
to what their own fingers have made.
9 So man (J)is humbled,
and each one (K)is brought low—
do not forgive them!
10 (L)Enter into the rock
and hide in the dust
(M)from before the terror of the Lord,
and from the splendor of his majesty.
11 (N)The haughty looks of man shall be brought low,
and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled,
and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
12 (O)For the Lord of hosts has a day
against all that is proud and lofty,
against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low;
13 against all the (P)cedars of Lebanon,
lofty and lifted up;
and against all the (Q)oaks of Bashan;
14 against all (R)the lofty mountains,
and against all the uplifted hills;
15 against every high tower,
and against every fortified wall;
16 against all (S)the ships of Tarshish,
and against all the beautiful craft.
17 (T)And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled,
and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low,
and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
18 (U)And the idols shall utterly pass away.
19 (V)And people shall enter the caves of the rocks
and the holes of the ground,[a]
from before the terror of the Lord,
and from the splendor of his majesty,
(W)when he rises to terrify the earth.
20 In that day (X)mankind will cast away
their idols of silver and their idols of gold,
which they made for themselves to worship,
to the moles and to the (Y)bats,
21 (Z)to enter the caverns of the rocks
and the clefts of the cliffs,
from before the terror of the Lord,
and from the splendor of his majesty,
(AA)when he rises to terrify the earth.
22 (AB)Stop regarding man
(AC)in whose nostrils is breath,
for of what account is he?

The day of the LORD will reveal the superficiality of every idol that people have built up and put their trust in. This may include wealth, possessions, or one’s own fame or position or desired achievement. When our life’s worth is dependent on material things or endless human achievement, then it becomes a house on shifting sands.
Are there any pursuits that have taken away from real healing and real fulfillment in your life? The day of the LORD is coming, and when it does, may we recognize the futility of worthless pursuits. May we choose to live intentionally in the splendor of God’s sovereign reign in our lives. May we choose people over profits and grace over being right in our own minds. Let us love God and others deeply from the heart.
Prayer: Lord, there are so many things that enchant me and fill my heart with desires yet always leave me unfulfilled, yet I cling to them. Humble me, and help me to cast them away and see the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.
One Word: Walk in the light of the Lord
