Passage: Matthew 9:18-26

Key verse: 25

NIV

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(A)

18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(B) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(C) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.

20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(D) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(E) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(F) And the woman was healed at that moment.(G)

23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(H) 24 he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead(I) but asleep.”(J) But they laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.(K) 26 News of this spread through all that region.(L)

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

18 (A)While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and (B)knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. 20 And behold, a woman (C)who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched (D)the fringe of his garment, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, (E)“Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” (F)And instantly[a] the woman was made well. 23 And when Jesus came to the ruler's house and saw (G)the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away, for (H)the girl is not dead but (I)sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But (J)when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and (K)took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went through all that district.

1. My daughter has just died (18-19, 23-26)

A synagogue leader's daughter had just died, but in desperation, he believed that Jesus could do something. When all hope is gone, sometimes all we can do is come to God for help. Jesus went with him. When he got there, he first drove out all the mourners. When it was just Jesus and the girl, Jesus took the girl by the hand and she got up! Jesus turned a time of mourning into great joy and amazement.

2. Take heart, daughter (2

-22)

A woman who had been subject to bleeding for 12 years believed that just touching the edge of Jesus cloak would heal her. Although it seemed to be the most unobtrusive method, Jesus turned and saw her. He saw her faith and he recognized her as God's beloved daughter, and she was healed at the very moment. Whether our problems are big or small, God cares for all who come to him in faith as a loving parent cares for their own son or daughter. God's love raises us up from despair and even death itself.

Prayer: Lord, you can heal me, give me new life, and wake me up from slumber.

One Word: Get up
