NO ONE CAN SNATCH US OUT OF JESUS' HAND

Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[a] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.(A) 24 The Jews(B) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”(C)

25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you,(D) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,(E) 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.(F) 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,(G) and they follow me.(H) 28 I give them eternal life,(I) and they shall never perish;(J) no one will snatch them out of my hand.(K) 29 My Father, who has given them to me,(L) is greater than all[b];(M) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(N)

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,(O) 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”(P)

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,(Q) ‘I have said you are “gods”’[c]?(R) 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God(S) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside(T)— 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart(U) as his very own(V) and sent into the world?(W) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?(X) 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.(Y) 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”(Z) 39 Again they tried to seize him,(AA) but he escaped their grasp.(AB)

40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan(AC) to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign,(AD) all that John said about this man was true.”(AE) 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.(AF)

I and the Father Are One

31 (O)The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but (P)for blasphemy, because you, being a man, (Q)make yourself God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in (R)your Law, (S)‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be (T)broken— 36 do you say of him whom (U)the Father consecrated and (V)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because (W)I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 (X)If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, (Y)even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that (Z)the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39 (AA)Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place (AB)where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. 41 And many came to him. And they said, “John did no sign, but (AC)everything that John said about this man was true.” 42 And (AD)many believed in him there.

1. Secure in Jesus' hand (22-3 ) Some Jews accused Jesus of being vague about his claims to be the Messiah. Jesus was not vague at all. The real problem was that people did not want to believe. They were unwilling to listen to Jesus and unwilling to repent and believe. They were not Jesus' sheep. On the other hand, Jesus gives eternal life to all who repent and believe in him. Our life is secure in Jesus' hand. No one, not even the devil, can snatch us out of Jesus' hand nor God the Father's hand. Jesus and the Father are one. 2. Jesus is God's Son (31-42) Next the Jews accused Jesus of blasphemy for claiming to be God. But if the Scriptures called the prophets "gods", then it was even more appropriate to use this term for the Messiah who is greater than any prophet. If Jesus was set apart as God's very own, then his claim, "I am God's Son," is not blasphemy but truth. Jesus also pointed to his miracles as evidence that he and the Father are one. The Jews in Jerusalem would not believe but many across the Jordan believed.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for eternal life in Jesus and that you hold us secure in your hand.
