SO NOW I GIVE HIM TO THE LORD

Passage: 1 Samuel 1:19-28

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(A) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(B) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(C) She named(D) him Samuel,[a](E) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

Hannah Dedicates Samuel

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(F) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(G) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(H) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[b]

23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(I) his[c] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(J) him.

24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[d](K) an ephah[e] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(L) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(M) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

21 The man Elkanah and all his house (C)went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord (D)and dwell there forever.” 23 (E)Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; (F)only, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him, (G)she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull,[b] an ephah[c] of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to (H)the house of the Lord at Shiloh. And the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “Oh, my lord! (I)As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I prayed, (J)and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.”

(K)And he worshiped the Lord there.

1. The birth of Samuel (19-23) The Lord blessed Hannah and gave her a son. Hannah named him Samuel ("heard by God"), because the Lord heard her prayer. She remembered the Lord and her promise to him. She sought the Lord and saw his face in times of struggle and in times of blessing. She cared for the boy as God's own, and vowed to present him to the Lord. 2. Hannah gives Samuel to the Lord (24-28) As soon as the child was weaned she took him back to the house of the Lord. She prepared an offering sacrifice as prescribed in the Law, but essentially she offered Samuel for the work of the Lord. The Lord kept his promise, and now Hannah kept hers. This is the worship of the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, you are my source of blessing and life. Help me to remember you in times of blessing and keep my promises.
