HUMBLE YOURSELF AND REPENT

Submit Yourselves to God

4 What causes fights and quarrels(A) among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle(B) within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill.(C) You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive,(D) because you ask with wrong motives,(E) that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

4 You adulterous(F) people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world(G) means enmity against God?(H) Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.(I) 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]?(J) 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
    but shows favor to the humble.”[c](K)

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,(L) and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you.(M) Wash your hands,(N) you sinners, and purify your hearts,(O) you double-minded.(P) 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.(Q) 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.(R)

4 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions[a] are (A)at war within you?[b] 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask (B)wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 (C)You adulterous people![c] Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? (D)Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit (E)that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But (F)he gives more grace. 1. Spiritual adultery (1-5) Fights and quarrels among us are caused by the conflicting desires in our hearts. Unrestrained evil desire can lead to murder. Covetousness leads to fights. We do not have because we do not ask God. When we ask, we ask for things to spend on our own selfish pleasure. These desires point to friendship with the world which is spiritual adultery. But God is jealous for us and desires all our affections and attention. 2. Come near to God (6-1 ) God is gracious despite our uncommitted hearts towards him. He calls us to humble ourselves, repent and submit to him. God promises to come near to us when we come near to him. He washes our sins away and forgives us by Jesus' blood. When we humble ourselves, he lifts us up and shows us his one-sided grace.

Prayer: Lord, I humbly come to you in repentance. Change my heart and help me to be fully devoted to you.
