Warning Against Unbelief

7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:(A)

“Today, if you hear his voice,
8     do not harden your hearts(B)
as you did in the rebellion,
    during the time of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your ancestors tested and tried me,
    though for forty years they saw what I did.(C)
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,(D)
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ (E)”[a](F)

12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.(G) 13 But encourage one another daily,(H) as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.(I) 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold(J) our original conviction firmly to the very end.(K) 15 As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts
    as you did in the rebellion.”[b](L)

16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?(M) 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?(N) 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest(O) if not to those who disobeyed?(P) 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.(Q)

A Rest for the People of God

7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

(A)“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
    on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your fathers put me to the test
    and saw my works for (B)forty years.
10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
    they have not known my ways.’
11 (C)As I swore in my wrath,
    ‘They shall not enter my rest.’”

12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from (D)the living God. 13 But (E)exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by (F)the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, (G)if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,

(H)“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

16 For (I)who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not (J)all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (K)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that (L)they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that (M)they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

1. Do not harden your hearts (7-11,16-19) Psalm 95 is about the people of Moses' day. Although God rescued them from Egypt and provided everything they needed in the wilderness, they hardened their hearts, testing and trying God. God patiently bore with them, but his anger burned. As they persisted in sinful unbelief (19), they were prevented from entering God's rest (11), and perished in the wilderness (17). Their story is a sobering warning to us about the deceitfulness of sin and unbelief. 2. Hold our original conviction firmly (12-15) How are we to avoid their fate? The author makes us responsible: See to it that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. We are to encourage one another daily to hold firmly to what we share in Christ, our original conviction to the end. Is it "today"? Then let's encourage someone to live by faith in Jesus.

Prayer: Father, thank you for Jesus. Help me encourage someone to live by faith in Jesus today.
