YOU ALONE ARE TO BE FEARED

Psalm 76[a]
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.

1 God is renowned in Judah;
    in Israel his name is great.(A)
2 His tent is in Salem,(B)
    his dwelling place in Zion.(C)
3 There he broke the flashing arrows,(D)
    the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.[b](E)

4 You are radiant with light,(F)
    more majestic than mountains rich with game.
5 The valiant(G) lie plundered,
    they sleep their last sleep;(H)
not one of the warriors
    can lift his hands.
6 At your rebuke,(I) God of Jacob,
    both horse and chariot(J) lie still.

7 It is you alone who are to be feared.(K)
    Who can stand(L) before you when you are angry?(M)
8 From heaven you pronounced judgment,
    and the land feared(N) and was quiet—
9 when you, God, rose up to judge,(O)
    to save all the afflicted(P) of the land.
10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,(Q)
    and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.[c]

11 Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;(R)
    let all the neighboring lands
    bring gifts(S) to the One to be feared.
12 He breaks the spirit of rulers;
    he is feared by the kings of the earth.

76 In Judah God is (C)known;
    his name is great in Israel.
2 His (D)abode has been established in (E)Salem,
    his (F)dwelling place in Zion.
3 There he (G)broke the flashing arrows,
    the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah

4 Glorious are you, more majestic
    (H)than the mountains full of (I)prey.
5 (J)The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil;
    (K)they sank into sleep;
all the men of war
    were unable to use their hands.
6 At your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
    both (L)rider and horse lay stunned.

7 (M)But you, you are to be feared!
    Who can (N)stand before you
    when once your anger is roused?
8 From the heavens you uttered judgment;
    (O)the earth feared and was still,
9 when God (P)arose to establish judgment,
    to save all the humble of the earth. Selah

10 Surely (Q)the wrath of man shall praise you;
    the remnant[a] of wrath you will put on like a belt.
11 (R)Make your vows to the Lord your God and perform them;
    let all around him (S)bring gifts
    to him who (T)is to be feared,
12 who (U)cuts off the spirit of princes,
    who (V)is to be feared by the kings of the earth.

1. Who can stand before the God of Israel? (1-1

)

God's people know that he is great, for they have seen his mighty works. He is glorious and majestic, resplendent with light. He breaks the weapons of the enemy. Enemy warriors, no matter how valiant, perish at his rebuke. He alone is the one-to be feared. When he rises up to judge, the land waits in silence. His judgment not only punishes the wicked; it saves the afflicted and helpless. The survivors of his wrath, the remnant, know and fear him.

2. Gifts for the one-to be feared (11-12)

To fear God means to love and respect him. When we fear the Lord, we are set free from fear of men. Those who fear God must make vows to him and keep them; we must share the knowledge of God with the world, so that all people may fear God and worship him. People who fear and honor God must bring him gifts.

Prayer: Lord, let every knee bow before you and every tongue confess your name. Teach all people to fear and serve you.
