John’s Vision of Christ

I, John,(A) your brother and companion in the suffering(B) and kingdom(C) and patient endurance(D) that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God(E) and the testimony of Jesus.(F) 10 On the Lord’s Day(G) I was in the Spirit,(H) and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,(I) 11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see(J) and send it to the seven churches:(K) to Ephesus,(L) Smyrna,(M) Pergamum,(N) Thyatira,(O) Sardis,(P) Philadelphia(Q) and Laodicea.”(R)

12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands,(S) 13 and among the lampstands(T) was someone like a son of man,[a](U) dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet(V) and with a golden sash around his chest.(W) 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.(X) 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace,(Y) and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.(Z) 16 In his right hand he held seven stars,(AA) and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword.(AB) His face was like the sun(AC) shining in all its brilliance.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet(AD) as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me(AE) and said: “Do not be afraid.(AF) I am the First and the Last.(AG) 18 I am the Living One; I was dead,(AH) and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!(AI) And I hold the keys of death and Hades.(AJ)

19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen,(AK) what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand(AL) and of the seven golden lampstands(AM) is this: The seven stars are the angels[b] of the seven churches,(AN) and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.(AO)

Vision of the Son of Man

I, John, your brother and (A)partner in (B)the tribulation and (C)the kingdom and (D)the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos (E)on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 (F)I was in the Spirit (G)on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice (H)like a trumpet 11 saying, (I)“Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”

12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw (J)seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands (K)one like (L)a son of man, (M)clothed with a long robe and (N)with a golden sash around his chest. 14 (O)The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. (P)His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 (Q)his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and (R)his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 (S)In his right hand he held seven stars, (T)from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and (U)his face was like the sun shining (V)in full strength.

17 (W)When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But (X)he laid his right hand on me, (Y)saying, “Fear not, (Z)I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. (AA)I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and (AB)I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 (AC)Write therefore (AD)the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this. 20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and (AE)the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and (AF)the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

1. To the seven churches (9-11)

On the Lord's Day--Sunday--John had a vision of the risen Christ. Jesus spoke through John to the Christians suffering because of Roman persecution. John was their companion and brother in 'the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus.' He was in exile on the Island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. The 7 churches of Asia Minor represent the whole church of Jesus Christ.

2. Jesus stands among the churches (12-2

)

This is a glorious vision of the risen Jesus as high priest. He is there in the midst of his suffering people to encourage and strengthen them and to give assurance of victory. His eyes penetrate the heart. The double-edged sword coming out of his mouth is the word of God. His voice is like the sound of rushing water. He is the first and last, the beginning and the end. He was dead and is alive forever. He holds the keys of life and death, of heaven and hell. And he holds his church in his hand.

Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to see you in your glory.

One Word: A glorious vision of Jesus
