BLESSED ALONG WITH ABRAHAM

Passage: Galatians 3:1-9

Faith or Works of the Law

3 You foolish(A) Galatians!(B) Who has bewitched you?(C) Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.(D) 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit(E) by the works of the law,(F) or by believing what you heard?(G) 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?[a] 4 Have you experienced[b] so much in vain—if it really was in vain? 5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles(H) among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?(I) 6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[c](J)

7 Understand, then, that those who have faith(K) are children of Abraham.(L) 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”[d](M) 9 So those who rely on faith(N) are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.(O)

By Faith, or by Works of the Law?

3 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? (A)It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly (B)portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: (C)Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by (D)hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? (E)Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by[a] the flesh? 4 (F)Did you suffer[b] so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and (G)works miracles among you do so (H)by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as (I)Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

7 Know then that it is (J)those of faith who are (K)the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that (L)God would justify[c] the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, (M)“In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

1. Believe what you heard (1-5)

What have we heard? We hear about Jesus Christ, crucified for our sins and raised to life by God. This is what we believe. We believe that God has cleansed us and given us his Spirit. I cannot change anyone--not even myself. But God works miracles in the hearts and lives of those who believe.

2. Blessed with Abraham (6-9)

Abraham is our spiritual ancestor. He was made righteous because of his faith. We are children of Abraham if we believe God's promises. God is the God of the whole world; he looked forward to the time when all people of all nations would be justified by faith, and he announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: 'all nations will be blessed through you.' (Ge 12:3; 22:18) Those who have faith in Jesus are blessed along with Abraham, the man who believed God. Like him, we are blessed so that we may be a blessing to the world.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to walk by faith as Abraham did. Bless my life and make me a blessing.
