GOD GIVES ABUNDANTLY

Passage: 2 Corinthians 9:6-11

Key verse: 8

NIV

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.(A) Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,(B) not reluctantly or under compulsion,(C) for God loves a cheerful giver.(D) And God is able(E) to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,(F) you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts(G) to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”[a](H)

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food(I) will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.(J) 11 You will be enriched(K) in every way so that you can be generous(L) on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.(M)

The Cheerful Giver

The point is this: (A)whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully[a] will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, (B)not reluctantly or under compulsion, for (C)God loves a cheerful giver. And (D)God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency[b] in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,

(E)“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

10 He who supplies (F)seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and (G)increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 (H)You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which (I)through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

1. Sow generously (6)

Giving is like sowing seed. If we sow generously, we will reap a large harvest. If we give with a grudging heart because we feel compelled to do so by the pressure of others, then God is not pleased, and the harvest will be small.

2. God is able (7-11)

There is another reason for giving with a glad and generous heart. God loves a cheerful giver, and God is the source of all blessings. Just as he supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, he promises to increase our ability to give and enlarge our harvest of righteousness. He makes us rich in every way--not so that we can pursue selfish pleasure, but so that we can give generously to others. When we give generously and joyfully because we love God, then others will praise and thank God, and God will be glorified.

Prayer: Lord, increase my faith so that I can be a generous and sacrificial giver, and please you.

One Word: God loves a cheerful giver
