DAVID'S RESURRECTION FAITH

Passage: Acts 2:25-36

Key verse: 36

NIV

25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
    Because he is at my right hand,
    I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    you will not let your holy one see decay.(A)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[a](B)

29 “Fellow Israelites,(C) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(D) David died and was buried,(E) and his tomb is here(F) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(G) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(H) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(I) and we are all witnesses(J) of it. 33 Exalted(K) to the right hand of God,(L) he has received from the Father(M) the promised Holy Spirit(N) and has poured out(O) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[b](P)

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(Q) and Messiah.”(R)

25 For David says concerning him,

(A)“‘I saw the Lord always before me,
    for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
    my flesh also will dwell (B)in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to (C)Hades,
    (D)or let your (E)Holy One (F)see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about (G)the patriarch David (H)that he both died and (I)was buried, and (J)his tomb is with us to this day. 30 (K)Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that (L)God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that (M)he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus (N)God raised up, (O)and of that we all are witnesses. 33 (P)Being therefore (Q)exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from (R)the Father (S)the promise of the Holy Spirit, (T)he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For (U)David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,

(V)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
35     until I make your enemies your footstool.”’

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that (W)God has made him (X)both Lord and Christ, this Jesus (Y)whom you crucified.”

1. Your Holy One will not see decay (25-32)

In Psalm 16 David wrote words that could only be applied to the risen Christ. He wrote with prophetic insight because he knew the living God personally. He found his joy and strength in God. His hope was not in worldly success or possessions or people. His hope was in the living God. God fulfilled David's prophetic words when he raised Jesus to life. The apostles were the first witnesses to the fact that God raised Jesus to life (32).

2. He is exalted to the right hand of God (33-36)

The risen Christ ascended into heaven to be enthroned at the right hand of God. David also spoke about this in Psalm 11

. Furthermore, from his place of power and glory, Christ poured out the promised Holy Spirit on all who believe the gospel, to empower us to be his witnesses. When the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead is working in our lives, God's enemy Satan is defeated.

Prayer: Praise God who made Jesus, whom we crucified, both Lord and Christ. Come Holy Spirit. Fill us today. Equip us to be witnesses to the living Christ.

One Word: God has made him Lord and Christ
