TAKE HEART! I HAVE OVERCOME

Passage: John 16:25-33

Key verse: 33

NIV

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(A) a time is coming(B) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(C) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(D) and have believed that I came from God.(E) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(F)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(G) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(H) that you came from God.”(I)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(J) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(K) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(L) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(M)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(N) In this world you will have trouble.(O) But take heart! I have overcome(P) the world.”

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. (A)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 (B)for the Father himself loves you, because (C)you have loved me and (D)have believed that I came from God.[a] 28 (E)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now (F)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (G)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (H)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (I)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (J)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (K)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (L)will leave me alone. (M)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (N)in me you may have peace. (O)In the world you will have (P)tribulation. But (Q)take heart; (R)I have overcome the world.”

1. You believe at last! (25-31)

Jesus wanted his disciples to know who he was and why he had come. He came from God, with God's mission to die for the sins of the world. Soon he would complete that mission and return to God. He wanted them to know that, no matter what, God loves those who love Jesus. Those who love Jesus can pray, and God will hear. The disciples finally accepted Jesus' words and confessed their faith. Jesus was now ready to leave.

2. I am not alone (32-33)

Jesus knew that their faith was weak, even though they had accepted his words and believed in him. Head-knowledge is a start, but it is not enough. In the moment of crisis, his disciples would all run away. But Jesus would not run away. He trusted God, not his sheep. The Father was with him. Jesus overcame the world and he gives victory and peace to those who believe in him.

Prayer: Lord, I believe that you love me and that you died for me. Help me to overcome the world.

One Word: Faith is the victory
