HE WHO SENT ME IS TRUE

Passage: John 7:25-36

Key verse: 28

NIV

Division Over Who Jesus Is

25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?(A) 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities(B) really concluded that he is the Messiah?(C) 27 But we know where this man is from;(D) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,(E) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.(F) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.(G) You do not know him, 29 but I know him(H) because I am from him and he sent me.”(I)

30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,(J) because his hour had not yet come.(K) 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him.(L) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs(M) than this man?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,(N) and then I am going to the one who sent me.(O) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(P)

35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered(Q) among the Greeks,(R) and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”(S)

Can This Be the Christ?

25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom (A)they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, (B)speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that (C)the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 But (D)we know (E)where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, (F)no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, (G)as he taught in the temple, (H)“You know me, and you know where I come from. But (I)I have not come of my own accord. (J)He who sent me is true, (K)and him you do not know. 29 (L)I know him, for I come (M)from him, and (N)he sent me.” 30 (O)So they were seeking to arrest him, but (P)no one laid a hand on him, (Q)because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet (R)many of the people believed in him. They said, (S)“When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd (T)muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent (U)officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, (V)“I will be with you a little longer, and then (W)I am going to him who sent me. 34 (X)You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? (Y)Does he intend to go to (Z)the Dispersion among (AA)the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, (AB)‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

1. I know him (25-29)

Jesus was a man with a mission. He was sent by his Father on a rescue mission into a sinful world to bring dying men back to God. He came as the culmination of God's redemptive history. He was the promised Christ. But many people saw him with human eyes and could not recognize him. He plainly announced, 'I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true...I know him because I am from him and he sent me.' Those who loved truth put their faith in him.

2. Where I am you cannot come (3

-36)

When many people put their faith in Jesus, the Pharisees tried to arrest him; they failed, because his time to die as the Lamb of God had not yet come. They thought he was planning a trip overseas. Jesus told them plainly that unspiritual men who refused to believe in the one sent by God could not go to the heavenly kingdom.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for coming to rescue me from sin and death. I believe and know that you are the only way to God.

One Word: Jesus came to give life
