BUT I HAVE PRAYED FOR YOU

Passage: Luke 22:31-38

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(A) to sift all of you as wheat.(B) 32 But I have prayed for you,(C) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(D)

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(E)

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(F) did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[a];(G) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, (H)“When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that (I)this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: (J)‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For (K)what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two (L)swords.” And he said to them, (M)“It is enough.”

1. Satan asked to sift you as wheat (31-34)

Satan is always looking for the weak point of a person God wants to use. He tried to destroy Simon Peter's faith. Simon thought that his love for Jesus was strong enough, but Jesus knew that he would fail, for human love is never strong enough. Jesus prayed for him, that his faith might not fail. When Simon repented, he could be a shepherd of others. We must never despair when we fail; this is the time to come to God in faith, receive his forgiveness and do God's work.

2. Did you lack anything? (35-38)

Jesus trained his disciples to depend on God, not on material things or on the sword. Now, the time of training was over. They could take the purse and the sword, but they were not to depend on them. Jesus' death would complete his part in God's plan for world redemption. Jesus' disciples must do battle with Satan and bring the gospel to the world. This is still the task of disciples. Jesus prays for us.

Prayer: Lord, help me to depend on you. Help me to repent and not despair.
