FOR THAT IS WHY I WAS SENT

Passage: Luke 4:38-44

Key verse: 43

NIV

Jesus Heals Many(A)(B)

38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(C) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(D) he healed them.(E) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(F) But he rebuked(G) them and would not allow them to speak,(H) because they knew he was the Messiah.

42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(I) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(J)

1. Jesus at Simon's house (38-39)

It was the Sabbath day. After leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to Simon's house to be with his disciples. Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever. They asked Jesus to help her. He rebuked the fever; it left her and she got up and served them. Jesus' rebuke heals us and enables us to serve him.

2. The crowds come (4

-41)

At sunset the Sabbath officially ended, and the crowds began to come. They brought all their sick, and Jesus gently laid his hands on each one; he healed them all--one by one. Demons came out shouting, for they knew their enemy.

3. A solitary place (42-44)

Jesus was almost overwhelmed by the rising tide of popularity. People wanted healing. Many pulled at him to go here and there; others begged him to stay. At daybreak he went out and found a solitary place to pray. He found God's direction. He had been sent to preach the good news of the kingdom of God to all.

Prayer: Lord, give me solitary time with you each day, and your clear leading for my life.

One Word: Pray, and preach the good news
