A Servant of the MYSTERY OF Christ
(Be Filled to the Fullness of God)

Ephesians 3:1-21

“I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.” (vs. 7)

A prominent preacher pointed out that the greatest problem of Christians today is their lack of the knowledge of God and spirituality. This is precisely what Apostle Paul saw the Ephesians needed most. Do you know who the richest person in the world is? He is a Mexican business magnate named Carlos Slim, who has a wealth of 70 billion dollars. But all of his wealth is but “pennies” when compared with the spiritual wealth we have in Christ. If we live like poor children not knowing the riches we have, our heavenly Father will feel sorry.

In today’s passage, Apostle Paul tells us about the boundless riches we have in Christ. He also shows us a glorious vision of the church which reveals the manifold wisdom of God. Then he prays that the saints may grow to all the fullness of God. The apostle wrote this chapter from his deep personal experience. May God help us to grasp the riches we have in Christ and grow to the fullness of God.           

I. A prisoner of Christ Jesus for the Gentiles (vv. 1-9)    

Verse 1 reads, “For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—” Paul was suffering as a prisoner to Rome. But he confessed that he was the prisoner of Christ Jesus. Why? Because his heart was bound by the love of Jesus Christ. Christ became the treasure, hope, and purpose of his life. When he became a prisoner of Christ, he was freed from all bondage in life. Why did Paul become a prisoner? Because he preached the mystery of Christ.

Here “mystery” is not something like a detective story or a horror movie. It is a truth that was hidden by God and is now being revealed to those who are being saved. Look at verse 6, “This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.” Here we notice the word “together” three times. “Together” in the original text means “sharing equality in every way.” Since the fall, it has been the most difficult word for humanity to embrace. Think about the discrimination, divisions and conflicts that have existed and still exist among peoples, nations, generations, and genders. Who can demolish the walls between people? Jesus proclaimed, “The time has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mk 1:15) Jesus welcomed social outcasts into his kingdom. Jesus welcomed Gentile sinners into his kingdom. He shed his blood to reconcile all of his people to God and to one another. Jesus Christ is our peace (2:14). In Christ, all peoples on earth are made equal members of God’s family, equal sharers of the riches in Christ, and equal heirs of the inheritance in God’s kingdom. In the Old Testament, God spoke about the salvation of all peoples through the Christ. But this wondrous new society of the redeemed people was a mystery until the coming of Christ. This mystery was revealed to Paul, a Jewish hardliner and persecutor of the church, when God forgave his sins and redeemed him through the blood of Christ.  

Verse 7 reads, “I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.” With the revelation of the mystery of Christ, God also revealed to Paul the good work he had prepared for him to do (2:10). The Lord said, “This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name” (Ac 9:15-16). The good work for Paul was to preach the gospel to the Gentiles and the scattered Jews. This work involved much suffering. He would be misunderstood, hated, flogged, stoned, imprisoned, and martyred. But Paul was most thankful for his mission, for he always remembered what kind of sinner he was. He said in verse 8a, “Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me…” As a servant of the gospel, what did Paul do? Verses 8b and 9 read, “...to preach the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration  of this mystery which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.”

As God’s servants, we are called to preach the riches of Christ. We should know the boundless riches of Christ. Then we should teach the full gospel so that God’s flock under our care may have life and have it to the full (Jn 10:10b). This whole epistle enumerates the riches we have in Christ. They are God’s grace of choice and predestination for sonship; redemption and the forgiveness of sins. They are the spiritual life, power, sanctification, and wisdom and knowledge of God and his will through the Holy Spirit. They are the hope of the resurrection and the glorious inheritance of the kingdom of God. They are a holy and victorious new life and peace, unity and fellowship among believers. And, most of all, the riches are God’s love through which all these spiritual blessings came. Nothing in the world can give us any of these riches. Praise God who gave us the boundless riches of Christ and a glorious mission of preaching them!   

God helped Paul to serve his work through the working of his power. No one can do God’s work by his own ability. God works in us through our obedience. We must depend on God and seek his help every day. How did God manifest his power through Paul? God gave him a deep understanding of the mystery of Christ through the word of God. God gave him courage to proclaim God’s truth. God gave him love to embrace even his enemies. God gave him strength, peace and joy to endure all hardships. And God manifested his power through the miracles of transforming, healing, and restoring people through his ministry. When Paul humbly submitted himself to Christ, the Holy Spirit worked in him to have the character, mind, and heart of Christ. He was filled with the compassion of Jesus. He was filled with Jesus’ zeal and vision. He had Jesus’ humility and endurance. So he could say, “I can do all things through him who gives me strength” (Php 4:13). God has also helped us to serve his work through the working of his power. We need more and more of God’s help to serve his greater work. May we remember God’s grace! May we lay down our pride and self-reliance and humbly submit ourselves to God. 

II. The manifold wisdom of God (vv. 10-13)

As we preach the riches of Christ, God works out his purpose for the whole church. As servants of the gospel, we should know God’s grand plan for his church. Read verses 10-11. “His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.” These verses open our minds to understand the universe as a vast theatre. The world is the stage, and church members in every land are the actors. God himself has written the play, and he directs and produces it. Then who are the audiences? They are the rulers and authorities--the angels in the heavenly realms. We don’t see angels, but they see us. As they watch people being saved and God’s wisdom being displayed, good angels shout “Wows!” while bad ones scream “Boos!”   

God displayed his glory and wisdom through the creation of the world. God has been displaying his manifold wisdom through the re-creation of his people. The word “manifold” means “many-colored” and was used to describe flowers, crowns, embroidered cloth and woven carpets. God is displaying his wondrous and many-colored wisdom through the church. He does this according to his eternal purpose that was accomplished in Christ Jesus.

In Ephesians, Paul describes the redeemed people of God using four metaphors: citizens, members of God’s household, members of one body, and members of a temple (1:22-23, 2:18-20). We are citizens of God’s kingdom. All our fellow citizens are a new creation—a new people. As members of one body with Christ as our head, we are all interconnected and we support one another. As a new creation, the church is a revolutionary society without any distinction. The church is a shadow of the eternal kingdom of God to come. God the Father and God the Son live in each of us and in the church through the Holy Spirit.  We must always remember that God is the Lord of the church. We should feel God’s presence and seek his help daily. We should follow the will of our Head, Christ. Most of all, we must believe in the Triune God who is working in our ministry. “Have faith in God!” (Mk 11:22b) “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent” (Jn 6:29).

No matter how people see the church, the church is central to God’s history. When we ponder how God reveals his salvation to people, we marvel at his wisdom. Those whom we could never imagine would believe become Christians. People who look as if they would never change are changed. Throughout history, the church has been persecuted, but she stood victorious while all the worldly powers perished. In this troubled world, even unbelievers find their hope in the church for truth, love, and righteousness. The church is the light of the world. She is mysterious, invincible and glorious. God continues his sanctifying work in each believer so that all churches together shine with the beauty of his design. Do you see the glorious vision of the church that displays the riches of the Christ?

In the church, each member has its unique role and position within the whole which God assigned. What is our role as an organization in God’s church? We are Jesus’ disciples who are committed to world campus mission. If we compare the whole church to a military, we are the marines that engage in the battle at the frontier. We diligently go to campuses to fish students, nourish them with the words of God, and send most of them to local churches, though we don’t like the last part. If we see our ministries from an invest-profit concept, we are not doing a good business. But if we see our ministries from God’s point of view, we are doing a beautiful ministry.

What is the inmost heart of God? It is to seek and to save the lost. World mission is God’s heart-beat. Think about God’s sorrow when Christians do little to rescue the perishing people. Think about how God is pleased and comforted when he sees us diligently inviting students and teaching them the gospel. Our one-to-one Bible study is a very powerful tool of evangelism. Therefore most of those who studied in UBF become Christians and then serve in local churches. When Bible students leave, shepherds are sorrowful. But there are cheers of the angels in heaven on behalf of our shepherds. The Lord will say, “Well done, my faithful servants. You added many members to the family of God.”  When we enter the kingdom of God, we will be surprised at so many people coming to us to say “Thank you! Thank you!” Who will they be? They are those who met Christ through UBF Bible studies and all of those who were saved through their ministries.

When we serve God’s purpose with a big perspective, we can joyfully serve one-to-one ministry. As we do so, God will raise more disciples who will keep the beauty of our ministries and serve God’s purpose for his whole church.

All members in our chapters are equally precious and indispensable. Our Lord valued one soul more than the whole world. Late Dr. Samuel Lee labored in the pains of child birth in order to help many individuals to be fully restored. We can respect all members equally when we recognize their gifts, encourage them to work together according to their gifts, and value their contributions equally. When our chapters become such a loving and respectful community, all members are happy and the Holy Spirit is pleased to work powerfully among us.

When we see the glory of God revealed through the church, we can willingly participate in the suffering of Christ. Look at verse 13, “I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.” Paul encourages the Ephesian Christians not to be discouraged because of his sufferings. Paul shared God’s joy when people approached God with freedom and confidence in Christ and through faith in him (12). Paul found supreme glory and joy in his service for God’s wondrous work of building his church. May we glory in our service for building up God’s glorious church!

III. Be filled to the measure of the fullness of God (vv. 14-21)     

Now Paul prays on his knees for the Ephesians. Paul prays for all believers to be sanctified so that they may be filled to the measure of the fullness of God (19b). What a glorious and fantastic prayer topic this is! But he was not fantasizing. He had a clear understanding what believers need in order to grow to the measure of the fullness of God. He prays for three things: One, our inner being may be strengthened by God’s power. Two, Christ may dwell in our hearts. Three, we may grasp and know the love of Christ. These are like three upward steps toward the fullness of God.

First, “Be strengthened in your inner being.” Read verse 16. “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being…” Our spirit is made alive but our inner being needs to be strengthened by the power of the Holy Spirit. What makes us weak? It is our sins and wounds. In our weakness, we cannot resist the devil and his temptations; we cannot build up sound relationships. The root of our sinful nature is deep. In order to uproot it, we need a deep study of the word of God and sincere repentance (Heb 4:12). Our past wounds make us sick. Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners” (Mk 2:17). No one who ever came to Jesus failed to receive healing. Do you still have any sin problem or wounds? Please come to Jesus and pray, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean” (Mt 8:2). Do you still have any anger or bitterness or sorrow? Please come to Jesus, sincerely confessing that you need healing. The blood of Jesus has power to cleanse and sanctify us from any sin and sickness by the power of the Holy Spirit (Heb 9:13-14). 

Second, “Christ may dwell in your hearts.”  Look at verse 17a. “… so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” This prayer is closely related with both the first and the third prayer topics, for union with Christ is the core of a Christian’s life. Here the word “dwell” is for a permanent resident, not a guest. So this prayer is that we may always be ruled by Christ in our hearts through faith. Because Paul had Christ who was crucified and glorified in his heart, he could be more than a conqueror in all hardships through the working of the power of the Holy Spirit. He expressed this experience in the phrase “in Christ.” The phrase appears 216 times in the Pauline epistles, including 27 times in Ephesians. So this book contains the phrase most among the epistles. We should give Christ the first place in our hearts. When we do so, we can confess like the Apostle Paul, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Ga 2:20).

Third, “Grasp and know the love of Christ. Read verses 17b-19a. “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge …” Next Paul prays that we be rooted and grounded in love. Here “love” is agape. Our foundation should be laid on the love of God. Anyone should examine whether or not his foundation is solidly laid on love--the love of God and love for God. If his foundation is self-love, he and his ministry will eventually fail. Based on this solid foundation, Paul prays that we may have power to grasp and know how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. To “grasp” is to lay hold of it and make it our own. To “know” is gaining intimacy with a person through experience. Love surpasses intellectual understanding. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant couldn’t marry the woman he dated because it took too long for him to analyze what love is. A Bible scholar said, “The love of Christ is broad enough to encompass all mankind, long enough to last for eternity, deep enough to reach the most degraded sinner, and high enough to exalt him to heaven.”

Christ’s love is fully manifested on the cross. The most difficult thing for us is to bear those who are proud and rebellious. The characteristic of the proud people is that they are groundlessly proud. They give deep hurts by their words and actions. This is what all mankind has done to God. How much is the holy God hurt by the evils and rebellion of people who reject their Creator? Martin Luther said, “If I were God, I would judge the world ten times a day.” Yes, mankind deserves what he said. But God withheld his wrath by his compassion, and his justice by his love. Instead of judging, God decided to forgive and restore our love relationship by any means. For this God did what was the most difficult thing for him to do. He gave his one and only Son as a sacrifice. The Son emptied his glory as God and became a servant. He bore the sins, weaknesses and wickedness of people to the end. He gave his life for us all. On the cross, he prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23:34a). In the darkest hours of his life, Jesus did not think of himself. He thought of those who crucified him—all of us. In his prayer, there is no hint of accusation. Jesus understood why people sin. He forgave them and prayed for God’s forgiveness.  

Christ’s love is an unconditional love. It is a sacrificial love. It is a life-giving love. The width, length, height and depth of Christ’s love can be grasped and known through experiencing Christ in our lives. Paul wanted to know Christ and his love by participating in Christ’s sufferings, becoming like him in his death (Php 3:10). What does it mean to become like Christ in his death? In order to know Christ and his love, something has to die in us. What is it that has to die? It is another love-the love of self. This self-love is the root of sin. Paul died to worldly boasting by considering everything a loss except knowing Christ. He died to pride by becoming like a scum of the world for Christ’s sake. He died to passion by serving all kinds of people with humility and tears. While doing so, he came to grasp Christ’s love and grew to be like Christ.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them (1Jn 4:16). To Paul, growing to be like Christ in love was to be filled to the measure of the fullness of God. Paul’s prayer teaches us what the mark of Christian spirituality is. It is love. It also teaches us what the ultimate goal of discipleship and church community building is. It is to help each member through our examples to become a man and woman who grasp Christ’s love and practice it. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (Jn 13:34-35) What did the Lord say the mark of a disciple is? It is love. There is nothing stronger than love. Love is power. Love does not make us tired. A mother never feels tired of caring for her child because of her love. Paul could serve God and people by God’s power in all hardships because he was filled with the love of Christ. Are we tired or troubled? Do we have conflicts with our coworkers? Let’s pray that we may grasp and know Christ’s love. When each of our chapters becomes a community of love, we will shine as a light in the world, God will be glorified, and there will be a great revival through the powerful working of the Holy Spirit.

We have learned and seen the glorious vision of the church that displays the riches of the Christ. Where are we in the measure of the fullness of God? Can the glory of God fill our community as it once filled the temple? By mere human efforts, it won’t happen. But we have amazing resources which makes it happen. Let’s read verses 20-21. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”  Our heavenly Father is the one who is able to do far beyond what we ask. Our faithful Father is working through the Holy Spirit’s power in each believer and the church. Christ is loving and caring for his church, even at this moment. Let’s not be discouraged by our sufferings. Let’s pray to our Father so that we may carry out our glorious mission through the working of his power by the Holy Spirit. Amen.

그리스도의 비밀의 일꾼
(하나님의 충만으로의 충만)

“이 복음을 위하여 그의 능력이 역사하시는 대로 내게 주신 하나님의 은혜의 선물을 따라 내가 일꾼이 되었노라.”

한 저명한 전도자는 오늘날 기독인들의 가장 큰 문제는 하나님을 아는 지식과 영성의 결핍이라고 지적했습니다. 사도 바울이 에베소 신자들에게 가장 필요하다고 본 것이 바로 이것입니다. 세계에서 가장 부자가 누구인지 아십니까? 멕시코 기업가 까를로스 슬림으로서 700억불의 재산가입니다. 그러나 그가 가진 부는 우리가 그리스도 안에 가진 영적 부요에 비하면 동전 몇개의 가치에 지나지 않습니다. 우리가 가진 부를 알지 못하고 가난한 아이들처럼 산다면 하나님 우리 아버지께서 슬퍼하시지 않겠습니까?

오늘 말씀에서 사도 바울은 그리스도 안에서 우리가 가진 측량할 수 없는 풍성함에 대해 말합니다. 또한 하나님의 각종 지혜를 나타내고 있는 영광스러운 교회의 비젼에 대해 말합니다. 그리고 성도들이 하나님의 모든 충만하심으로 충만해지기를 기도합니다. 바울은 자신의 깊은 경험으로부터 이 장을 썼습니다. 하나님께서 우리가 그리스도 안에 있는 풍성함을 깨닫고, 우리와 우리의 공동체가 하나님의 충만하심으로 성장할 수 있도록 도우시기를 기도합니다.  

I. 이방인을 위하여 갖힌 자 바울 (1-9)

1절을 보십시오. “이러므로 그리스도 예수의 일로 너희 이방인을 위하여 갇힌 자 된 나 바울은…”  바울은 로마의 죄수로서 고난을 당하고 있었습니다. 그러나 그는 원문에 보면 자신이 그리스도의 포로라고 고백합니다. 그가 그리스도의 사랑에 잡혀있었기 때문입니다. 그리스도는 그의 보화요 소망이요 삶의 목표가 되었습니다. 그가 그리스도께 잡혔을 때, 삶의 모든 속박으로 부터 자유하게 되었습니다. 왜 바울은 죄수가 되었습니까?  그가 그리스도의 비밀을 전파했기 때문입니다. 

“비밀” 하면 탐정이야기나 공포영화같은 것이 떠오르지요. 여기서 비밀이란 하나님의 경륜에 따라 감취어져 있다가 모든 구원받는 성도들에게 알려지고 있는 진리를 말합니다. 6절을 읽겠습니다. “이는 이방인들이 복음으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 상속자가 되고 함께 지체가 되고 함께 약속에 참여하는 자가 됨이라.”  여기서“함께”라는 말이 세번 반복되어 있습니다.  이의 원문은 “똑같은 동료로서”란 뜻입니다. 이는 타락 이후로 인류가 가장 받아들이기 어려운 단어였습니다. 이제까지 있어 왔고 지금도 있는 사람들 간, 나라들 간, 세대 간, 그리고 성별 간의 차별과 분열과 갈등들에 대해서 생각해 보십시오. 누가 사람들 간의 이 장벽을 허물 수 있습니까? 예수께서 “때가 찼고 하나님의 나라가 가까이 왔으니 회개하고 복음을 믿으라”고 선포하셨습니다 (막 1:15). 예수님은 사회에서 추방된 자들을 그의 왕국으로 영접하셨습니다. 이방인 죄인들을 그의 왕국으로 영접하셨습니다. 그는 그의 모든 백성들을 하나님과 또 그들 서로 간에 화해시키기 위해 피흘리셨습니다. 예수님은 우리의 화평이십니다 (2:14). 그리스도 안에서 세상 만민들이 함께 하나님의 가족이 되고, 함께 그리스도 안에 있는 부요를 소유하게 되고, 함께 하나님 나라의 유업을 상속받게 되었습니다. 하나님께서 구약의 예언자들을 통해서 만민이 그리스도 안에서 구원받으리라는 약속을 주셨습니다. 그러나 속량함 받은 사람들의 이 경이로운 새 공동체는 그리스도의 오신 때까지 감추어진 비밀이었습니다. 하나님께서 골수 유대교인이요 교회의 핍박자였던 바울의 죄를 그리스도의 피를 통해 사하시고 속량하셨을 때, 이 비밀이 그에게 계시되었습니다.     

“이 복음을 위하여 그의 능력이 역사하시는 대로 내게 주신 하나님의 은혜의 선물을 따라 내가 일꾼이 되었노라” (7). 하나님께서 바울에게 그리스도의 비밀과 함께 그를 위하여 예비하셨던 선한 일을 계시하셨습니다 (2:10): “이 사람은 내 이름을 이방인과 임금들과 이스라엘 자손들에게 전하기 위하여 택한 나의 그릇이라. 그가 내 이름을 위하여 얼마나 고난을받아야 할 것을 내가 그에게 보이리라” (행 9:15-16). 바울을 위하여 하나님이 예비하신 일은 이방인들과 흩어진 유대인들에게 복음을 전하는 것이었습니다. 이는 많은 고난이 따르는 일이었습니다. 바울은 오해받고, 미움받고, 채찍에 맞고, 돌에 맞고, 옥에 갖히고, 결국은 순교할 것입니다. 그러나 바울은 자신이 과거 어떤 죄인이었던가를 항상 기억했기 때문에 이 하나님의 소명을 무엇보다도 감사했습니다. 그는 8a절에서 “모든 성도 중에 지극히 작은 자보다 더 작은 나에게 이 은혜를 주신 것은…”이라고 말합니다. 복음의 일꾼으로서 바울은 무엇을 했습니까? 8b-9절을 보십시오: “측량할 수 없는 그리스도의 풍성함을 이방인에게 전하게 하시고 영원부터 만물을 창조하신 하나님 속에 감추어졌던 비밀의 경륜이 어떠한 것을 드러내게 하려 하심이라.”  

하나님의 종들로서 우리는 그리스도의 풍성함을 전하기 위하여 부름받았습니다. 우리가 해야할 일은 먼저 그리스도의 측량할 수 없는 풍성함을 아는 것입니다. 그리고 온전한 복음을 가르쳐서 우리에게 맡기신 주님의 양떼들이 생명을 얻고 더 풍성히 얻게 하는 것입니다 (요 10:10b). 본서 전체가 그리스도 안에서 우리가 가진 풍성함에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 그것들은 하나님의 자녀로서의 선택과 예정하심, 구속과 죄사함입니다. 성령을 통해 오는 영적 생명과 능력과 성화와 하나님과 그의 뜻을 아는 지혜와 지식입니다.  몸의 부활과 하나님 나라의 영광스러운 유업에 대한 소망이요, 거룩하고 승리하는 새 삶입니다. 기독 공동체 안에서의 화평과 하나됨과 교제요, 무엇보다도 이 모는 영적 축복을 가져온 하나님의 사랑입니다. 그리스도의 풍요함은 마치 우주와 같이 측량할 수 없습니다. 세상의 아무것도 이 풍요함의 어느 하나도 우리에게 줄 수 없습니다. 그리스도 안에서 우리에게 측량할 수 없는 풍요함을 주시고, 이를 전하는 영광스러운 사명을 주신 하나님을 찬송합니다!         

하나님께서 바울 안에 능력으로 역사하심으로써 그를 도우셨습니다. 아무도 자신의 능력으로 하나님의 일을 할 수 없습니다. 하나님은 우리의 순종을 통해서 일하십니다. 우리는 매일 하나님을 의지하고 그의 도우심을 구해야 합니다. 하나님께서 바울을 통해 어떻게 역사하셨습니까? 말씀을 통해서 그리스도의 비밀의 깊은 것을 깨닫게 하셨습니다. 하나님의 진리를 선포할 수 있는 용기를 주셨습니다. 원수들까지도 품을 수 있는 사랑을 주셨습니다. 모든 고난을 이길 수 있는 힘과, 평화와 기쁨을 주셨습니다. 그리고 그의 사역을 통해서 변화와 치유와 회복의 기적들을 나타내셨습니다. 그가 겸손히 그리스도께 순복하였을 때, 그에게 그리스도의 성품과 정신과 마음을 주셨습니다. 그는 그리스도의 긍휼로 가득하였습니다. 그는 그리스도의 열정과 비젼으로 충만했습니다. 그는 그리스도의 겸손과 인내로 하나님의 양떼들을 섬길 수 있었습니다. 그래서 그는, “내게 능력 주시는 자 안에서 내가 모든 것을 할 수 있느니라”고 말했습니다 (빌 4:13). 하나님께서 우리 안에 능력으로 역사하심으로 우리도 그의 사역을 할 수 있도록 도와 오셨습니다. 우리가 그의 뜻 두신 더 큰 역사를 섬기기 위해서 더욱 더 하나님의 도우심이 필요합니다. 저희가 하나님의 은혜를 늘 기억할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 저희가 교만과 자기를 의지하는 것을 버리고 겸손히 하나님께 순복하도록 기도합시다. 

II. 하나님의 각종 지혜 (10-13) 

우리가 그리스도의 풍성함을 전파할 때, 하나님께서 그의 전 교회에 두신 목적을 이루어 가십니다. 교회에 두신 하나님의 웅대한 계획이 무엇입니까? 10-11절을 읽겠습니다, “이는 이제 교회로 말미암아 하늘에 있는 통치자들과 권세들에게 하나님의 각종 지혜를 알게 하려 하심이니 곧 영원부터 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에서 예정하신 뜻대로 하신 것이라.” 이 말씀은 우리의 눈을 열어 영계에서 이루어지고 있는 일을 보게합니다. 하나님께서는 교회를 통하여 천사들에게 그가 이루시는 경이로운 일들을 보여주고 계신 것입니다. 우리는 천사들을 볼 수 없으나 천사들은 우리를 보고 있습니다. 그들은 사람들이 구원받고 하나님의 지혜가 나타날 때마다 좋은 천사들은 “와!”하고, 악령들은 “우!”하고 있습니다. 하나님은 천지창조를 통하여 그의 영광과 지혜를 나타내셨습니다. 하나님은 지금 그의 백성들의 재창조를 통해서 그의 영광과 지혜를 나타내고 계십니다. 여기서 “각종” (영: manifold)이란 복합사는 꽃다발이나 왕관이나 자수, 또는 양탄자에 나타난 “여러 다채로운 색갈들”을 가리키는 말입니다. 하나님께서 그의 경이롭고 다채로운 지혜를 교회를 통해 나타내고 계십니다. 이는 영원부터 그리스도 안에서 예정하신 뜻입니다.

본서에서 사도 바울은 구속받은 하나님의 백성들을 시민들, 하나님의 가속, 몸의 지체, 그리고 성전으로 묘사하고 있습니다 (1:22-23, 2:18-20). 우리는 영원한 하나님 나라의 시민들입니다. 우리의 동료 시민들은 모두 새 피조물, 곧 새 사람들입니다. 그리스도를 머리로 한 몸의 지체로서 우리 모두가 연결되어 서로를 지탱해주고 있습니다. 새 피조물로서 교회는 어떤 차별도 없는 혁명적인 사회입니다. 교회는 장차 임할 하나님 나라의 그림자입니다. 성부 하나님과 성자 하나님께서 우리 각 자 안에, 그리고 교회 안에 성령 하나님을 통해 임재하십니다. 우리는 항상 우리 공동체의 주인이 하나님이심을 기억해야 합니다. 그의 종들로서 우리는 매일 하나님의 임재를 느끼고 그의 도우심을 구해야 합니다. 우리는 우리의 머리되신 주님의 뜻을 따라야 합니다. 무엇보다 우리의 사역 속에 일하시는 삼위 하나님을 믿어야 합니다. “하나님을 믿으라!” (막 11:22b)  “하나님께서 보내신 이를 믿는 것이 하나님의 일이니라” (요 6:29).

세상 사람들이 어떻게 보든지 교회는 역사 (history)의 중심에 서있습니다. 우리가 하나님께서 사람들 안에 하시는 일을 생각할 때 그의 지혜에 경이로움을 금할 수 없습니다. 도무지 믿을것 같지않던 사람들이 신자가 됩니다. 결코 변할것 같지않던 사람들이 변화됩니다. 역사를 통해 교회는 핍박을 받아 왔으나 세상 나라들이 멸망하는 동안 교회는 굳게 서 왔습니다. 이 문제 많은 세상에서 불신자들도 진리와 사랑과 의에 대하여 교회에 마지막 소망을 두고 있습니다. 교회는 세상의 빛입니다. 교회는 신비롭고 무너뜨릴 수 없고 영화롭습니다. 하나님께서는 신자 각 자 안에 성화의 역사를 이루어 가심으로써 그의 교회들이 함께 그의 의도하신 아름다움을 더욱 빛내게 하십니다. 그리스도의 풍성함을 나타내고 있는 교회의 영광스러운 비젼을 보십니까?

전교회 안에서 각 신자와 각 지교회는 그들 만이 가지는 하나님이 주신 역할과 위치가 있습니다. 하나님의 교회 안에서 우리 모임의 역할이 무엇입니까? 우리는 세계 캠퍼스 선교에 헌신된 그리스도의 제자들입니다. 교회를 하나님의 군대에 비한다면, 우리는 최전선에서 적진을 공격하는 해병대라고 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 캠퍼스에 나아가 열심히 학생들을 초청하여 그들을 하나님의 말씀으로 양육하고 (우리는 이 부분은 좋아하지 않지만) 그들의 대부분을 다른 교회들로 보냅니다. 우리가 “투자 대 이익”의 관점으로 우리 사역을 보면, 우리는 큰 이익을 못보고 있는것 같습니다. 그러나 우리 사역을 하나님의 관점에서 보면, 우리는 참으로 아름다운 사역을 하고있는 것입니다.

하나님 마음 속 가장 깊은 소원이 무엇입니까? 그것은 잃어버린 자들을 찾아 구원하는 것입니다. 세계 선교는 하나님의 심장의 박동과 같습니다. 하나님께서 멸망해가고 있는 사람들을 구원으로 인도하기 위해 아무 것도 하지 않고 있는 신자들을 보실 때, 얼마나 안타깝고 슬퍼하시겠습니까? 하나님께서 우리가 열심히 학생들을 초청하고 그들에게 복음을 가르치는 것을 보시면서 얼마나 기뻐하시며 위로를 받으시겠습니까? 우리의 일대일 성경공부는 강력한 전도입니다. 그래서 UBF에서 성경을 공부한 대부분의 학생들은 신자가 됩니다. 양들이 떠나갈 때 우리 목자들에게는 슬픔이 있습니다. 그러나 하늘에서 우리 목자들을 향해 천사들의 격려의 응원이 있습니다. 주님께서 저희들에게 말씀하실 것입니다. “잘하였도다 내 착하고 충성된 종아. 네가 하나님의 집에 많은 가족들을 인도하였구나.” 우리가 하나님의 나라에 들어가면 수많은 사람들이 나와서 “정말 고마워요. 참 고맙습니다”하고 인사하는 것을 보고 놀라게 될 것입니다. 그들이 누구냐고요? 저희의 성경공부를 통해 주님을 만난 사람들과 그들의 사역을 통해서 예수님을 믿게된 사람들입니다. 우리가 넓은 시야를 갖고 하나님의 목적을 섬길 때, 우리는 기쁨으로 일대일 사역을 감당할 수 있습니다. 그리할 때 하나님께서 우리 가운데 많은 제자들을 세워주셔서 저희의 아름다운 사역이 성장하게 하시고, 전 교회에 두신 하나님의 목적을 섬기게 하실 것입니다.      

저희 지부의 모든 회원들은 똑같이 꼭 필요하고 귀한 존재들입니다. 주님은 한 생명를 천하보다 더 귀히 여기셨습니다. 고 이사무엘 선교사님은 한 사람 한 사람이 회복되기까지 돕기 위하여 많은 해산의 수고를 감당하셨습니다. 배사라 선교사님은 매일 여러 사람을 성경공부와 카운슬링으로 섬기십니다. 우리는 동역자 또는 양 한 사람 한 사람을 천하보다 더 귀하게 여겨야 합니다. 동역이 힘들고 갈등이 생기는 주요 원인은 동역자 또는 양의 귀한 면을 보기보다는 부족한 면을 보고 판단하고 요구하는 마음을 갖기 때문입니다. 이는 하나님의 마음이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 얼마나 죄악된 우리를 인내하시며 사랑과 소망으로 섬기셨는가를 우리는 항상 기억해야 합니다. 그리고 동역자들과 양들을 그들의 있는 모습대로 영접하고 사랑하며 하나님의 방법으로 섬겨야 합니다. 선교사들과 현지리더들의 사랑과 신뢰의 관계는 우리공동체에서 가장 중요합니다. 우리는 사도 바울과 그의 제자들 간의 아름다운 사랑과 존경의 모범을 따라야 합니다. 사람마다 잘하는 부분이 있고 잘못하는 부분이 있습니다. 우리가 각 사람의 은사를 귀히 여기고, 그 은사를 통해 잘 기여하도록 돕고, 또 모든 회원들의 기여를 똑같이 귀히 여길 때, 모든 회원들이 서로를 존중하며 함께 일하게 될 것입니다. 우리의 지부가 이렇게 서로 존중하고 사랑하는 공동체가 될 때, 모든 회원들이 행복을 느끼고 성령께서 기뻐하사 우리 가운데 능력으로 역사하실 것입니다.

우리가 교회를 통해 나타나는 하나님의 영광을 볼 때, 우리는 기꺼이 그리스도의 고난에 동참할 수 있습니다. 13절을 보십시오. “그러므로 너희에게 구하노니 너희를 위한 나의 여러 환난에 대하여 낙심하지 말라. 이는 너희의 영광이니라.”  바울은 에베소 교인들에게 자신의 고난으로 인해 낙심하지 말라고 격려합니다. 바울은 그들이 그리스도를 믿음으로 말미암아 담대함과 확신을 가지고 하나님께 나아감을 보고 기쁨에 넘쳤습니다 (12). 그는 교회를 세우는 하나님의 경이로운 역사에 쓰임받는 데서 자신의 최고의 영광과 기쁨을 발견하였습니다. 저희가 영화로운 하나님의 교회를 세우는 역사를 위해 부르심 받은 것으로 인해 가장 큰 영광과 기쁨을 가질 수 있기를 바랍니다.

III. 하나님의 충만하신 것으로의 충만 (14-21)

이제 바울은 무릎을 꿇고 에베소 성도들을 위해 기도합니다. 그는 모든 성도들이 성화되어 하나님의 모든 충만하신 것으로 충만케 되기를 기도합니다 (19b). 이 얼마나 영광스럽고 환상적인 기도입니까? 그러나 바울은 환상 속에서 기도한 것이 아닙니다. 그는 성도들이 하나님의 충만하심까지 자라가기 위해서 무엇이 필요한가를 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그는 세 가지를 위해 기도합니다: 첫째, 그들의 속 사람이 하나님의 능력으로 강건하여지고, 둘째, 그리스도께서 그들의 마음에 계시게 하옵시고, 셋째, 그들이 그리스도의 사랑을 깨닫고 알게되기를 기도합니다.  이 기도들은 하나님의 충만을 향해 올라가는 세 계단과도 같습니다.

첫째, “속 사람을 능력으로 강건하게 하옵시고…”  16절을 읽겠습니다. “그의 영광의 풍성함을 따라 그의 성령으로 말미암아 너희 속사람을 능력으로 강건하게 하옵시며…”  우리의 영혼은 구원을 받았으나 우리의 속 사람은 성령의 능력으로 강건해져야 합니다. 무엇이 우리를 약하게 합니까? 죄와 마음에 상처들입니다. 우리가 연약할 때 마귀와 그의 시험에 대항할 수 없고, 사람들과 건강한 관계성을 맺을 수 없습니다. 우리의 죄의 본성은 깊습니다. 그것을 뿌리뽑기 위해서는 깊은 말씀공부와 회개가 필요합니다 (히 4:12). 과거의 마음의 상처는 우리를 병들게 합니다. 주님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “건강한 자에게는 의원이 쓸 데 없고 병든 자에게라야 쓸 데 있느니라. 나는 의인을 부르러 온 것이 아니요 죄인을 부르러 왔노라” (막 2:17). 예수님께 나아온 사람들은 모두 치유를 받았습니다. 아직도 죄문제나 치유되지 않은 상처를 가지고 있습니까? 주님께 나아오십시오. 그리고 “주여, 원하시면 저를 깨끗하게 하실 수 있나이다”고 기도하시기 바랍니다 (마 8:2). 아직 분노나 쓴 뿌리나 슬픔이 있습니까? 주님께 나아와 진실되게 자신이 병나음이 필요함을 고백하십시오. 예수님의 피는 어떤 죄와 병도 성령의 능력으로 깨끗케 하시고 성화하는 능력이 있습니다 (히 9:13-14).   

둘째, “그리스도께서 마음에 계시게 하옵시고…”  17a절을 보십시오. “믿음으로 말미암아 그리스도께서 너희 마음에 계시게 하옵시고…”  이 기도는 첫째와 다음 셋째 기도제목들과 밀접히 연관되어 있습니다. 그리스도와의 연합이 신자의 삶의 핵심이기 때문입니다. 여기서 “계신다”는 단어는 손님이 아니라 상주자에 대해 쓰는 말입니다. 따라서 이 기도는 그리스도께서 믿음을 통하여 우리의 마음을 항상 다스려 주시기를 바라는 간구입니다. 바울은 십자가에서 죽으시고 부활하사 영화롭게 되신 그리스도를 항상 그의 마음에 모셨기 때문에, 성령의 능력으로 모든 고난을 넉넉히 이길 수 있었습니다. 그는 이 체험을 “그리스도 안에서”라는 말로 표현했습니다. 이 표현은 바울서신에 216번 나타나고, 본서에서 바울서신 중 가장 많은 27번 나타나 있습니다. 우리는 그리스도께 우리 마음의 첫자리를 내어드려야 합니다. 그리할 때 우리는 사도 바울과 같이 “내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 산 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사신 것이라”고 고백할 수 있습니다 (갈 3:20).

셋째, “그리스도의 사랑을 깨닫고 알게하사…” 17b-19a절을 읽겠습니다. “너희가 사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어져서 능히 모든 성도와 함께 지식에 넘치는 그리스도의 사랑을 알고 그 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠함을 깨달아 하나님의 모든 충만하신 것으로 너희에게 충만하게 하시기를 구하노라.”  다음으로 바울은 우리가 사랑 안에서 뿌리가 박히고 기초가 놓여지기를 기도합니다. 여기서 사랑은 “아가페”입니다. 우리의 삶과 사역의 기초가 하나님의 사랑에 놓여져야 합니다. 누구든지 자신의 기초가 하나님의 사랑과 하나님께 대한 사랑에 견고히 내려져 있는지 점검해 보아야 합니다. 만약 그의 기초가 자기사랑에 놓여있으면 그와 그의 사역은 결국 넘어지게될 것입니다. 이 사랑의 기초 위에 바울은 우리가 그리스도의 사랑의 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이를 깨닫고 알기를 기도합니다. “깨닫다”는 말은 “잡아 나의 것으로 만든다”는 뜻입니다. “알다”는 경험을 통해서 인격적인 친밀함에 이르는 것을 말합니다. 사랑은 지성적 이해를 초월합니다. 철학자 칸트가 사랑이란 무엇인가 분석하다가 결혼을 못했다고 합니다. 한 성서학자는 “그리스도의 사랑은 모든 인류를 품을만큼 넓고, 영원에 이르기까지 길며, 가장 타락한 죄인에 이르기까지 깊고, 그를 하늘로 올릴만큼 높다”고 했습니다.   

그리스도의 사랑은 십자가 상에서 온전히 나타났습니다. 우리에게 가장 어려운 것은 교만하고 반항적인 사람들을 참는 것입니다. 교만한 사람들의 특징은 근거없이 교만하다는 것입니다. 그들은 말과 행동으로 깊은 상처를 줍니다. 이것이 바로 온 인류가 하나님께 행한 것입니다. 자기들의 창조주를 부정하는 사람들의 악행과 거역으로 인해 거룩하신 하나님께서 받으신 상처가 얼마나 크겠습니까? 마틴 루터는 “내가 하나님이라면 하루 열번씩 세상을 심판했을 것이다”고 말했습니다. 그렇습니다. 인류는 그가 말한대로 심판을 받아 마땅합니다. 그러나 하나님은 그의 진노를 긍휼로써, 그의 정의를 사랑으로써 참으셨습니다. 심판하시는 대신 용서하시고 어찌든지 사랑의 관계를 회복하시기로 결심하셨습니다. 아가페적인 사랑은 결심을 통해 가능합니다. 하나님은 가장 어려운 일을 하셨습니다. 그의 독생자를 희생양으로 주신 것입니다. 하나님의 아들은 자신의 영광을 비워 종이 되셨습니다. 그는 사람들의 죄와 연약함과 사악함을 끝까지 김당하셨습니다. 그의 목숨을 우리 모두를 위해 주셨습니다. 십자가 위에서 그는 기도했습니다: “아버지여 저들을 사하여 주옵소서. 자기들이 하는 것을 알지 못함이니이다” (눅 23:34). 생애의 가장 어두운 시간에 그는 자신을 생각하지 않으셨습니다. 그는 자신을 십자가에 못박은 사람들-곧, 저희 모두를 생각하셨습니다. 그의 기도 속에는 전혀 원망이나 고소가 없습니다. 예수님은 사람들이 왜 죄를 범하는지 이해하셨습니다. 그는 그들을 용서하셨고 아버지께 그들의 무지한 죄를 용서해 주시기를 간구하셨습니다.

그리스도의 사랑은 무조건적인 사랑입니다. 그것은 희생적인 사랑입니다. 그것은 생명을 주는 사랑입니다. 그의 사랑의 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이는 그리스도를 우리의 삶가운데 체험함으로써 깨닫고 알게 됩니다. 바울은 그리스도의 죽으심을 본받아 그리스도의 고난에 참예함으로써 그리스도를 알고자 했습니다 (빌 3:10). “그리스도의 죽으심을 본받아”라는 뜻이 무엇입니까? 그리스도와 그의 사랑을 알기 위하여 우리 안에 무엇인가 죽어야만 한다는 뜻입니다. 무엇이 죽어야 합니까? 그것은 다른 사랑, 곧 자기사랑입니다. 이 자기사랑은 죄의 뿌리입니다. 바울은 그리스도를 아는 지식 외에 모든것을 해로 여김으로써 세상의 자랑에 대해 죽었습니다. 세상에서 찌끼처럼 취급받으면서 자신의 교만에 대해 죽었습니다. 모든 종류의 사람들을 겸손과 눈물로 섬기면서 자신의 혈기에 대해 죽었습니다. 이를 통해 그는 그리스도의 사랑을 알게 되었고, 그리스도의 형상을 가지게 되었습니다.

“하나님은 사랑이시라. 사랑 안에 거하는 자는 하나님 안에 거하고 하나님도 그의 안에 거하시느니라” (요일 4:16). 바울에게 있어서 하나님의 충만하신 것으로 충만케 되는 것은 바로 사랑에서 그리스도와 같이 되는 것이었습니다. 바울의 기도는 기독교 영성의 표가 무엇인지 가르쳐 줍니다. 그것은 사랑입니다.바울의 기도는 또한 무엇이 제자 양성과 기독 공동체 사역의 궁극적 목표인가 가르쳐 줍니다. 그것은 각 신자가 그리스도의 사랑을 깨닫고 실천할 수 있는 사람이 되도록 우리의 본을 통해 돕는 것입니다. “새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라. 내가 너희를 사랑한 것같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라. 너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라.” (요 13:34-35).  제자의 표가 무엇이라고 하셨습니까? 재능입니까? 열심입니까? 사랑입니다. 사랑보다 더 강한 것은 없습니다. 사랑은 능력입니다. 사랑은 지칠줄 모릅니다. 어머니는 아기에 대한 사랑 때문에 모든 희생에도 지치거나 손해의식에 잡히지 않습니다. 바울은 그리스도의 사랑으로 차있었기 때문에 하나님과 사람들을 하나님의 능력으로 섬기고 모든 고난을 이길 수 있었습니다. 피곤하고 지쳐있습니까? 동역자들 간에 갈등이 있습니까? 우리가 그리스도의 사랑을 깨닫고 알 수 있도록 기도해야 하겠습니다. 우리의 각 지부가 사랑의 공동체가 될 때, 우리는 세상의 빛이 되고, 하나님께서 영광을 받으실 것이며, 성령께서 그의 능력의 역사로 부흥을 일으키실 것입니다.

우리는 그리스도의 풍성함을 나타내는 교회의 영광스러운 비젼에 대해서 살펴보았습니다. 우리는 하나님의 모든 충만함에서 어디까지 와있습니까? 예전에 하나님의 영광이 성전에 충만했던 것처럼 어떻게 하나님의 영광이 우리의 공동체에 충만할 수 있습니까? 우리의 인간적 노력으로는 불가능합니다. 그러나 우리는 이를 가능하게 하는 놀라운 능력의 원천을 가지고 있습니다. 20-21절을 읽겠습니다. “우리 가운데서 역사하시는 능력대로 우리의 온갖 구하는 것이나 생각하는 것에 더 넘치도록 능히 하실 이에게 교회 안에서와 그리스도 예수 안에서 영광이 대대로 영원 무궁하기를 원하노라 아멘.”  우리의 아버지 성부 하나님께서는 우리의 구하는 것이나 생각하는 것에 더 넘치도록 성령의 능력으로 역사하십니다. 성자 하나님은 지금 이 시간에도 저희를 위해 중보하시며 자신의 몸된 교회를 돌보고 계십니다. 우리의 형편때문에 낙심하지 맙시다. 우리가 그리스도의 사랑 안에서 성령의 무한하고 풍성하신 능력을 덧입고, 우리에게 주신 영광스러운 사명을 감당해 갈 수 있도록 하나님 아버지께 믿음으로 기도합시다. 아멘.
