The funeral service of the late Samuel Choi (Yonhee UBF, Korea) was held in Karlsruhe UBF (Germany) on Jan. 31, 2020. Missionaries, family members and guests from Korea and Germany attended. David Kim from Yonhee UBF in Korea delivered a message titled, “The Living Hope” based on 1 Peter 1:2-4.

Late Samuel Choi devoted his whole life to campus ministry along with his wife, Jongae Choi in Yonhee UBF in Korea. He endeavored to raise their 3 children as missionaries. They are Hannah (Ukraine), Samuel Jr. (USA), and Esther (Germany). 

It is not easy for the remaining family members to overcome the grief and sadness to send away their beloved husband and father. However, we learned that believing in God’s goodwill in his sovereignty and putting hope in the eternal home which never spoils or fades away truly strengthens them to overcome the sorrow and pain and we can send him away with joy and gratitude toward God. 

The participants together sang resurrection hymns joyfully. Caleb Hong of Heidelberg prayed and the first daughter, Hanna Choi sang a special song expressing joy and gratitude in memory of her father. His son, Samuel Choi Jr., recited a poem to his father in tears and thanksgiving. Tobias from Germany shared a testimony with the title, “A Legacy of Faith” based on what he had learned about faith through engaging many conversations with late Samuel before he passed away in a few days. The youngest daughter, Esther, recited a letter to her father. At the end of the service, there was a picture presentation that recalled his beautiful life of faith. When we finished the service, the atmosphere was joyful because of the hope of God. 

After the service, all the participants walked for 20 minutes to the cemetery together. There, M. Abraham Lee from Cologne led the burial service. After reading the words of 1 Corinthians 15:42, 44 the participants joyfully sang hymns of the resurrection sprinkling flowers and soils on the descended coffin. They sent him out to his eternal home. Thank God for blessing the Heavenly Kingdom Entry Ceremony of our beloved shepherd, Samuel Choi with the joy of hope and faith of the resurrection. I pray for the remaining family members, his wife, and his 3 children to continue to devote themselves to the work of the Lord. We praise and thank God for refreshing us all in resurrection faith and hope. May God comfort and strengthen all remaining family members in God’s hope.

고 최사무엘 목자님을 위한 천국 환송 예배가 1월 31일 독일 칼스루헤 쎈타에서 가족들과 독일 선교동역자님들과 친지들이 함께 하는 가운데 열렸습니다. 한국 연희쎈타에서 오신 김다윗 목자님께서 베드로전서 1장 3절,  4절 말씀을 기초해서 산소망 이라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하셨습니다. 생전 최사무엘 목자님은 최종애 사모님과 함께 UBF 켐퍼스 미션에 헌신하셨습니다. 그리고 큰딸 최한나 선교사를 우크라이나에, 큰 아들 JR 최사무엘 선교사를 미국에 .그리고 막내딸 최에스더 독일땅에 세자녀 모두를 선교사로 파송하여 하나님께 드렸습니다.  그동안 일생을 동고동락하여 온 사랑하는 남편을 잃고, 사랑하는 아버지를 잃고, 영원한 하나님 집으로 보내는 가족들의 슬픔이 컸습니다. 그러나 생명의 주권자이신 하나님의 선하신 뜻과 섭리를 믿는 믿음과, 썩지 않고 더럽지 않고 쇠하지 아니하는 영원한 하나님나라에 대한 소망이 우리의 모든 슬픔과 아픔을 을 이기고, 기쁨과 감사함으로 고인을 환송을 할 수 있음을 배우게 되었습니다. 참석자들은 예배를 함께 드리며 크게 부활의 찬송 (예수 부활했으니 와 무덤에 머물러)을 기쁨으로 함께 불렀고, 하이델베르크의 홍 갈렙 선교사님께서 대표기도가 있은 후, 첫째 딸 최 한나 선교사가 아버지를 기억하며 기쁨과 감사합으로 특송을 하였습니다. 큰아들 최사무엘 Jr.가 아버지께 드리는 시를 사랑의 마음과 눈물로 낭송하였습니다. 토비아스목자님이 그간 최사무엘 목자님과의 대화를 통해 배운 믿음에 대하여, 고인의 믿음의 유산이란 제목으로 소감을 써서 정리하여 발표하였습니다. 막내딸 최에스더 선교사가 아버지께 드리는 편지를 사랑과 눈물로 낭송하였습니다. 그리고 예배 마지막엔, 생전 최사무엘 목자님의 사진을 함께 보며, 고인을 회고하였습니다. 부활의 믿음과 하나님나라에 대한 산 소망으로 기쁨가운데 예배를 마쳤습니다.

환송예배가 끝난후 모든 참석자들이 20분을 도보로 걸어 함께 장지로 갔습니다. 쾰른에서 오신 이아브라함 선교사님께서 하관예배를 인도하셨습니다. 고전 15장 42 44절 말씀 낭독이 있은후, 모든 참석자들은 기쁨으로 부활의 찬송을 부르며, 하관이 되어진 곳에, 꽃과 흙을 뿌리며, 주님의 부르심에 따라서 이 세상에서의 삶을 마치고 영원하신 주님의 집을 향해 나아가는 최사무엘 목자님을 천국으로 환송했습니다. 천국환송예배와 화관예배를 부활의 소망과 믿음으로 기쁨가운데 마치게 하신 하나님께 감사드립니다. 종애사모님과 남은 자녀들이 이후에 세계선교에 헌신할 수 있도록 기도합니다.
