WHAT DO THESE STONES MEAN?

Joshua 4:6-7, 6 "to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

UBF Kenya had a conference to celebrate its 30th anniversary. We planned this conference to clearly remember what God has done in our ministry during the last 30 years and to have a spiritual direction for another 30 years in order to raise future national spiritual leaders.

The conference was held in ‘Bible Translation and Literacy Conference Centre’, in the suburb of Nairobi from 19th to 21st October 2019 Total attendants were almost 90 including delegations from USA, Korea and other African UBF chapters (Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, and Uganda).

The opening message was delivered by Caleb Kim from Chongno UBF in Korea, based on 1Timothy 3:1 entitled, ‘Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.’ He encouraged us to serve God’s flock in order to experience power of personal prayer and to learn the life of Jesus.

After the opening message, Dr. Mark Yang and Pastor Ron Ward from Chicago, USA, gave us an introductory lecture on inductive Bible study. The lecture timely supported one of the main legacies of UBF, “Go Back to the Bible”

During the conference, Dr. Mark Yang and Pastor Ron Ward led 3 sessions of inductive Bible studies based on the book of Ruth. Through this, we were able to learn how to find the treasure through the inductive Bible study so that the words of God can transform each of us. In the book of the Ruth, Ruth followed her mother-in-law to honor God giving up her human comfort. Eventually she married to Boaz and was blessed to be an ancestor of Messiah Jesus. By the strong impact of the inductive lectures, many brothers and sisters resolved to come back to God and his word.

On the evening, Dr. Charles K. from Chicago gave us a lecture on the history of UBF with an introduction of the founders, Dr. Samuel Lee, Sarah Barry, and UBF spiritual legacies. This lecture helped Kenyan local growing leaders to understand UBF history and spirit. Among the 8 spiritual legacies of UBF, the lecture focused on “Back to the Bible”. We were reminded that our ministry should focus on the Bible in every situations.

After that, M. Daniel Rhee who has been supporting Africa ministry from Korea over the last 20 years and now serves as a silver missionary in South Africa, gave us lecture on the history of UBF Africa ministry. He introduced how missionaries struggled to help African leaders to learn “Giving Spirit” based on Matthew 14:16, and to love God’s word, to serve God’s flock and to offer tithe faithfully. He emphasized that this is the time for African shepherds to take ownership of the ministries with stewardship as God's servants.

Congratulatory video messages by UBF General Director P. Moses Yoon, UBF Honorary Director Dr. John Jun,  Africa Coordinator James Lee in Zimbabwe, and other Africa senior missionaries were presented. Their messages congratulated and encouraged M. Mark and Jackie Yoon, M. Livingstone and Lydia Chung, M. Joshua and Pauline Kim, M. Jeremiah and Esther Hwang. Three senior shepherd’s family who are pillars of UBF Kenya ministry, Kevin and Nancy, Juma and Janet, Otieno and Lucy also received much encouragement and congratulation. 

UBF Kenya ministry began when M. Jackie Yoon, the first UBF missionary to Africa, came to Kenya in December 1989.

On the second day morning, Augustin L. shared his life testimony. Like the prodigal son who appears in the book of Luke 15, he abandoned God in order to seek for worldly pleasure and squandered his life. But he came back to God through repentance and witnessed God’s salvation grace. His testimony taught us how it is important to repent and come back to God as a true example of repentance.

During this conference, 5 Kenyan shepherds for whom we are praying to succeed the ministry with three senior shepherds, shared their life testimonies. They are Kennedy Onyango, Isaac Sonteddy, Brian Anyienda, Ken Kataka, and Cosmas Karisa.

Brian's life testimony sharing was followed. He lost his parents in his tender age and worked hard to be successful in the world to establish a happy family. However, he said that he only found himself as a slave to sinful desires wondering without directory of life. By God's grace, he decided to follow Jesus and is growing in the ministry. 

On the same day, a Sunday message was shared by P. Ron Ward based on the book of Ruth 1. Although Ruth was in a miserable situation, when she made a decision to follow God's direction and her mother-in-law to the land of Bethlehem, eventually she became an ancestor of Messiah Jesus. His message encouraged us to live a life of faith following God's way even if we are sometimes in midst of troubles and hardships. 

In the evening, Isaac Sonteddy shared his life testimony based on Ruth 1:16 with the title, ‘But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.”’ He lived a life of squandering with worldly friends. But through this passage, he confessed that he would never abandon God but leave as a devoted and faithful disciple of Jesus. He is faithfully serving Steven through Bible studies.

After that, Cosmas Karisa shared his life testimony based on Ephesians 2:19, "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household." He humbly shared his spiritual status and decided to live as a campus shepherd entrusting his job and future fully to God's hands. Especially, he is teaching the Bible to 5 or 7 brothers every week co-working with Juma.

1) Kenya UBF history and spiritual learnings, 
2) House church establishment
3) Disciple making ministry

Otieno shared UBF Kenya history. He shared how he and Kenyan brothers and sisters grew spiritually through the discipleship ministry. In the beginning, there were a lot of spiritual challenges and misunderstandings between missionaries and Kenyan leaders. In spite of such challenges, he witnessed that how he grew in independent spirit seeking God’s kingdom first to honor UBF spiritual legacy for the last 15 years since he has joined UBF ministry until he became a leader establishing a house church as an influential senior shepherd. 

Kevin shared about house church ministry in Kenya. He himself established first house church in Kenya ministry followed by Juma and Otieno. Although the two other shepherds married in the ministry, later they left. Kevin emphasized the importance of establishing God centered house churches in Kenya where there are so many broken families.  

Juma serves currently many brothers through Bible studies. Especially he has been serving Ken Onyango who will establish a house church after the conference. He shared a vision of disciple making in Kenya UBF. According to his presentation, faithful 1:1 Bible study, group Bible study, testimony writing and sharing were keys to raise disciples of Jesus alone with preparing environment for members to grow through Friday member’s fellowship and Sunday worship service. Especially he helped Ken Onyango sacrificially by taking him to a hospital while he was sick and paying the bill.

On the last day morning, Ken Kataka shared his life testimony based on Colossians 3:1, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.” He lived pursuing worldly values but began to follow heavenly value in Christ. He was shepherded by M. Moses Marji who went back to Chicago ministry. When he made a resolution, he became a faithful shepherd. We pray for him to establish a house church for God's glory.  

The closing message was shared by M. Mark Yoon, based on Joshua 4:6-7, 'to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, “What do these stones mean?” tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.’" During the last 30 years, God has established sincere and faithful disciples of Jesus since Kanya UBF started. This is like the work of God who led Israel to pass the Jordan River. Now, this is time to enter the promised land for us. He emphasized that our Kenya leaders should be key leaders in this ministry with humble stewardship from now. At the end of the message, he proposed that Kevn, Juma and Otieno should serve the ministry in turns each year independently as a part of directorship training. 

After the conference, we had a special engagement ceremony between Ken Oyango and Faith Nyakowa. We pray for them to establish the house in Dec. 2019. 

We also planted a Thika Plam tree in commemoration of Kenya UBF 30th anniversary conference. A Thika Palm tree typically grows up to 6~10 m. Like the tree, we pray that our ministry also maybe prosperous and more fruitful during the next 30 years and after

케냐UBF 30주년 기념 수양회 보고

이 돌들은 무슨 뜻이냐 하거든

케냐UBF는 개척 30주년을 기념하는 수양회를 가졌습니다. 이 수양회를 통해 30년간 하나님이 하신 일을 기억하고, 향후 30년을 섬길 영적방향과 이를 섬길 현지 리더들을 세우고자 하였습니다.

이번 수양회는 케냐, 나이로비의  Bible Translation and Literacy  International Conference Centre 에서 10.19~21에 걸쳐 열렸습니다. 참석 인원수는  전체로 약 90여명(2세들 25여명 포함) 이었습니다.

첫날 개회 메시지는 김갈렙 목자님이 디모데전서 3:1 “미쁘다 이 말이여, 곧 사람이 감독의 직분을 얻으려 함은 선한 일을 사모하는 것이라 함이로다” 말씀에 기초하여 케냐 모든 현지 리더들이 선한일을 사모할 것을 권면하였습니다. 또한 조지 뮬러의 삶과 그 자신의 경험을 통해서 우리 모두가 은밀하고 꾸준한 기도를 통하여 기도 응답을 받고, 하나님의 살아계심을 체험하고 나아가서 하나님의 양무리들을 섬기고, 예수님의 삶을 배울 것을 권면하였습니다.

개회 메시지에 이어서, 시카고 센타의 론워드 목자님과 양마가 목자님의 Inductive Bible Study 방법에 대한 강의가 약 40분간 있었습니다. 우리모임의 영적유산인 성경중심의 역사, 말씀중심의 역사에 대한 실천적인 면에서 매우 의미가 있는 강의였습니다

수양회 기간에는  시카고 센타의 양마가, 론워드 목자님의 인도로 룻기 전체를 3강으로 나누어 Inductive Bible Study 그룹별로 실시하였습니다. 이를 통해 성경본문을 모든 케냐 리더들이 스스로 깊이 연구함으로써 보화와 같은 하나님의 진리를 스스로 체험할수 있도록 하는 방법을 습득토록 하였습니다. 특히 룻이 인간적인 소망이 사라진 가운데서도 오직 하나님께 대한 신앙으로 고국을 떠나 시모를 따라 베들레헴 땅으로 가서 믿음의 삶을 살았을때 메시야의 조상으로 쓰임받는 놀라운 영적 축복을 누린 것을 통해서 케냐 모든 형제 자매들도 믿음의 삶을 살고 몇몇 형제 자매들은 죄가운데서 하나님께 돌이키고자 결단을 하는 역사가 있었습니다.  

첫날 저녁시간에는 Dr.찰스김 목자님이 UBF의 역사와 영적 유산에 대해서 강의해 주셨습니다. 1961년 사무엘리 선교사님과 사라 베리 선교사님의 기도로 대학생들을 제자 삶고자 광주에서 시작하여 1966년 서울을 개척하고, 1977년  시카고로 본부를 옮기고 1969년 부터 2000년 이르기까지 전 대륙에 선교사를 파송하여 오늘날에 이르고 있는 우리 모임의 역사를 통해 케냐 형제 자메들이 UBF에 대해 잘 이해하는 계기가 되었습니다. 특히 성경으로 돌아갈것, 평신도 자비량 세계선교, 1:1 말씀공부를 통한 캠퍼스 선교, 말구유 정신, 제자양성, 일용할 양식과 소감쓰기, 주는 정신, 거룩한 백성 제사장 나라 의 여덟가지 영적인유산을 소개하였습니다. 특히 성경말씀 중심의 역사를 계속 이어갈 뿐만 아니라 더욱 발전시켜  나아야 할 것을 권면하였습니다. 

이후에는 남아공의 실버선교사이자 지난 20여년간 한국본부에서 아프리카 선교 를 담당하셨고 이제 남아공 선교사로서 모범을 보이시고 계신 이다니엘 목자님이 UBF 아프리카 선교의 역사에 대해서 각 단계별로 도전과 극복을 통해 소개하였습니다. 마태복음 14:16, “예수께서 가라사대 갈 것 없다 너희가 먹을 것을 주라,” 요절말씀에 기초하여 받는데 익숙했던 아프리카 대학생들이 물질문제를 믿음으로 극복하고 헌금을 신실하게 드리고, 온전한 수양회비를 자발적으로 내며, 말씀을 사랑하고, 말씀에 기초하여 회개하고  나아가서 켐퍼스 양들을 먼저 섬기는데 시간을 드리기까지 성장하기까지 투쟁하고 섬긴 아프리카 선교사님들의 헌신을 소개하였습니다.  나아가서  이제는  아프리카 리더들이 주인으로 서야함을 강조하였습니다. 

아울러 저녁 시간에는 전 세계대표이신 전요한 박사님과 현재 대표이신 윤모세 선교사님, 아프리카 지부장이신 이 제임스 선교사님과 아프리카지부의 시니어 선교사님들, 종로 센타 학사 목자님들의 30주년 기념 메시지가 동영상으로 소개 되었습니다. 1989년도에 아프리카 UBF 최초의 선교사로 케냐에 파송이 된 재키윤 선교사님과 마크윤 선교사님, 이어서 파송된 리빙스턴, 리디아 정 선교사님,  김 여호수아, 폴린 선교사님 , 그리고 황예레메야 에스더 선교사님들을 격려하고, 케냐 가운데 굳건하게 리더로 선 케빈, 오티에노, 주마 목자 가정을 격려하고 축하하는 메시지였습니다. 

수양회 둘째날 주일 아침에는 종로 7부의 이 어거스틴 목자님의 소감발표가 있었습니다. 사망권세와 삶의 무의미함으로  정욕을 좆아 하나님을 떠날수 밖에 없었으나  회개하고  하나님의 품으로 다시 돌아온 깊은 구원의 은혜를  증거하였습니다. 이를 통해 케냐 형제 자매들에게도 참된 회개의 본을 보여 주었습니다. 

이번 수양회에서는  케냐에서 케빈 오티에노, 주마 목자를 계승하고 동역하며 또다른 30년 역사의 주역으로 세우고자 기도하고 있는 5명의 목자들이 인생소감을 발표하였습니다. 그들은 브라이언, 켄 카타카, 아이삭,  코스마스, 켄 오냥고 목자들입니다.

먼저 둘째날인 주일 아침에는 브라이언 목자가 소감을 발표하였습니다. 그는 어린시절 부모를 여의고 세상적인 성공과 단란한 가정을 이루기  위해서 달려왔으나 죄의 종이 될수 밖에 없는 자신을 발견하고 공허함 가운데 방황하다가 예수님의 제자로 살고자 결단하게 되었습니다. 

주일 메세지는 시카고의 론워드 목자님이 룻기 1장에 기초하여 전하였습니다. 비록 비참한 가운데 처해졌지만  인간적인 소망보다 참 복의 근원되신 하나님을 섬기고자 결단하고 시모를 따라 베들레헴땅에 와서 보아즈와 결혼을 하게 되고 결국 메시야의 조상의 반열에 오르게된 룻의 삶을 통해 우리 모두가 하나님을 좆는 참 신앙인의 삶을 살 것을 가르쳐 주었습니다. 

저녁시간에는 아이삭 목자와  코스마스 목자가 인생소감을 발표하였습니다.  아이삭 목자는  요절인 룻기1:16 ” 룻이 이르되 내게 어머니를 떠나며 어머니를 따르지 말고 돌아가라 강권하지 마옵소서 어머니께서 가시는 곳에 나도 가고 어머니께서 머무시는 곳에서 나도 머물겠나이다 어머니의 백성이 나의 백성이 되고 어머니의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 되시리니,” 기초하여   인생소감을 발표하였는데 정욕에 빠지고 세상 친구들과 어울려 방탕한 삶을 살된 데서 말씀공부를 통해서 예수님을 만나고 더이상 정욕과 방탕의 삶이 아닌 하나님의 종으로 살고자 목자로 살고 있는 자신의 삶을 간증하고 이제 더욱더 예수님의 헌신된 제자로 살고자 결단하였습니다.  그는 스티븐 형제 한사람을 말씀으로 섬기고 있습니다.

코스마스 목자는 에베소서 2:18-19절 “ 이는 그로 말미암아 우리 둘이 한 성령 안에서 아버지께 나아감을 얻게 하려 하심이라 . 그러므로 이제부터 너희는 외인도 아니요 나그네도 아니요 오직 성도들과 동일한 시민이요 하나님의 권속이라 “ 말씀에 기초하여 하나님의 자녀가 된 자신의 영적인 신분을 확신있게 간증하고 이제는 더욱더 양을 섬기는 목자로 살고, 직장과 장래도 모두 하나님께 맡기고자 결단을 하였습니다. 특히 그는 주마 목자와 동역하여 매주 5-7명의 학생양들을 말씀으로 섬기고 있습니다.

특히 주일 저녁시간에는 케냐 역사에서 중심적인 세명의 현지 목자인 케빈, 주마, 오티에노 목자들이 각각 연구 발표를 하였습니다. 순서대로 오티에노 목자는 케냐 UBF 역사와 영적인  교훈, 케빈 목자는 케냐의 가정교회 역사, 주마 목자는 제자양성 역사에 대해 본인들이 연구하여 발표를 하였습니다. 

오티에노 목자는 케냐 선교사님들의 선교 사역에 대해 자신이 학생때 부터 가정교회를 이루고 현재 케냐의 중심적인 목자로 성장해 온 15여년의 과정에 있어, 케냐 UBF의 제자 훈련과 말씀공부를 통해서 어떠한 배움과 성장이 있었는지를 케냐 현지 목자의 관점에서 잘 드러내었습니다.  어떻게 물질문제를 극복하고 자립정신을 배웠는지, 그리고 세상적인 영광을 구하기 보다  영적인 유산을 사모하는 것을 배웠는지를 잘 드러내었습니다. 이를 통해서 케냐 선교사님들의 지난 30여년의 수고와 인내를 엿볼 수 있었습니다. 

케빈 목자는 케냐의 가정교회역사에 대해서 발표를 하였습니다. 본인이 케냐 최초로 가정교회를 이루었으며 이후로 주마,자넷 목자 가정 오티에노 루시 목자 가정이 축복가운데 세워 졌습니다. 다만 다른 두 목자 가정이 더 세워 졌으나 이후 모임을 떠나는 아픔이 있었습니다. 결손과 외도등으로 가정에 많은 문제가 있는 케냐 가운데 믿음의 가정교회를 세우는 역사가 얼마나 소중한 것인가를 강조하였습니다.  

주마 목자는 현재 가장 많은 형제들을 신실하게 말씀으로 섬기고 있고, 특히 코스마스 목자와 올 12월에  믿음의 결혼을 켄 오냥고 목자를 신실하게 섬겨온 제자양성의 열매가 있는 목자입니다. 주마목자는 제자양성에 대한 발표를 하였습니다.  이는 다름 아닌 우리모임에서 이미  해오고 있는 새벽기도, 1:1 말씀공부, 그룹성경공부, 금요예배와 주일몌배, 소감쓰기, 메시지 훈련 등을 신실히 섬김으로 현지양들이 성장할수 있는 환경을 예비한 결과임을 가르쳐 주었습니다. 그는 목자의 심정으로 올  12월에 가정교회를 이룰 켄 오냥고 목자가  질병으로 고통할때 병원비까지 대며 섬기기도 하였습니다. 

수양회 마지막날 새벽에는  켄 카타카 목자의 인생소감 발표가 있었습니다.  골로세서 3:1 “그러므로 너희가 그리스도와 함께 다시 살리심을 받았으면 위의 것을 찾으라 거기는 그리스도께서 하나님 우편에 앉아 계시느니라.” 에 기초하여  과거 세상의 가치들을 좆던 데서 하나님나라의 가치들을 좆고자 하는 삶을 살고자 했을때 하나님께서 어떻게 인도하셨는가를 잘 드러내었으며 믿음의 결혼을 하고자 결단하였습니다.

수양회 폐회 메시지는 마크윤 선교사님이  여호수아서4:6-7  “이것이 너희 중에 표징이 되리라 후일에 너희의 자손들이 물어 이르되 이 돌들은 무슨 뜻이냐 하거든, 그들에게 이르기를 요단 물이 여호와의 언약궤 앞에서 끊어졌나니 곧 언약궤가 요단을 건널 때에 요단 물이 끊어졌으므로 이 돌들이 이스라엘 자손에게 영원히 기념이 되리라 하라 하니라” 에 기초하여 섬겼습니다. 30년간 하나님께서 굳건한 예수님을 제자들을 세워 주셨습니다. 이는  범람한 요단강에 길을 내시고 건너시게 한 역사입니다. 이제는 약속된 가나안 땅을 정복할 역사를 섬겨야 합니다. 영광스러운 하나님 나라에 함께 입성하여야 합니다. 이제 이 역사의 주역들은 바로 케냐 현지 목자들임을 강조하였습니다. 메시지 말미에는 케빈, 주마, 오티에노 세명의 목자들이 2020년부터 1년씩 돌아가며 자립적으로 역사를 섬기며 지부장 훈련을 받도록 방향을 제시하였습니다. 

아울러 수양회 식후 행사로 올해 12월에 소망스런 믿음의 결혼을 하게 될 켄 오냥고 목자와 페이스 목자의 약혼식이 있었습니다. 

수양회를 마무리 하면서 UBF Kenya의 이름으로 Thika Palm  기념식수를 하였습니다.  Thika Palm 은 다 자라면 6~10m 까지 자라는 것으로 알려 져 있는데, 추후 30년, 그리고 그 이후에도  저희 모임도 더욱더 열매 맺고 자라나기를 기도하는 시간을 가졌습니다​
