"Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down"(Isa 64:1a) 

Six months have passed since I began my duties as general director last August. After my inauguration, I spent my time in Chicago with my predecessor, Dr. Abraham Kim, to learn about the duties of the GD. After that I visited four countries - Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, and Venezuela - for 10 days. At the end of September, I visited Korea and shared the Latin America visitation report. On November 25, after I gave the 2019 New Year message on John 17 at Chicago UBF, I began to attend various New Year conferences held in 6 continents. Through my journey which continued till the middle of January 2019, I was able to give the message and build up a loving relationship with our missionaries and native leaders. 

From my experience for the past six months, I can say that our spiritual environment is never easy. We are faced with a huge spiritual challenge. Korea has played a major role in UBF world mission, and as Korea becomes an advanced country, her spiritual climate is now dry and difficult. Despite the indomitable spirit of Korean UBF staff and laymen leaders it is not easy to see ministry growth. Also as we find from the annual book, the number of SWS attendees last year in North America slightly dropped by 2 percent. The ministry in Latin America is growing. However, we still face health and financial problems of missionaries, and also the issue of leadership succession to native leaders. In Africa, leadership succession has been relatively well established, yet how to continue to mature the native leadership remains an important topic to pray for. In C nation, missionary activities have shrunk due to tight control of the authorities. The persecution in the Middle East remains unchanged, and some missionary families have returned home. Many families continue to light up the candle of prayer but are not sure of their future. Of course, there are some area and nations where God's work is growing. But in general, there is a challenge.

As a whole, we have a big prayer topic to raise next generation leaders. We have the task of how to continue to mobilize senior leaders as missionaries, and how to help the younger generation to succeed and develop the legacy of their previous generation. There are big generational, cultural gaps in the mission fields. Young people in this postmodern generation are indifferent to the gospel message. How can we overcome this? There is no easy answer. So we feel helpless and tend to sit down doing nothing in despair. Some leaders say that we may have to watch and wait another 50 years until the spiritual tide changes.

However, historically, our difficult situation is not unique. In the early 18th century, England was very corrupted spiritually and morally. In 1738 when John Wesley was changed at the Aldersgate in London, the Bishop Berkeley said, "morality and religion is so corrupted to the degree no precedent can be found in any other Christian countries.” In such a country, God used John Wesley and renewed the nation. From the late 18th century, England sent numerous missionaries to every corner of the world and opened a great era of mission. In the early 18th century North America was the same. The people lost their early Puritan faith and spiritually and morally became corrupt. At that time, God used one man, Jonathan Edwards, to revive the nation. The point is not whether the generation was corrupt or not but whether God works in that generation or not. Yes, our situation is tough but if God intervenes, there can be a great revival. Of course spiritual revival is totally up to God, however, before it happens there is always one common point - there are some people who study the word of God deeply and repent of their sins. There are people who yearn for revival and pray. It was the same at the time of the Pyeonyang revival in Korea, and in the UBF ministry in the 1980's.

So what I am trying to say is this. The reality is difficult and we need God's intervention. God needs to bring a revival. But in order for us to see it happening, all we must do is nothing else. We need to return to the Bible. We should not just study the Bible theoretically or theologically but accept it as the word of the living God and live repentant lives. And we need to pray earnestly. Then God will surely give us his grace, and at his sovereign time, he will bring the revival. So our prayer is this - "Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down" (Isa 64:1a). God will surely hear our prayers. He will answer when we believe and ask.

Thank you so much for coming here. Some of you came all the way from Canada or California. We may think.. What do we get by going to Chicago sacrificing our time and paying the expensive air fare? Just to hear the reports and raise hands to approve something, the details of which we actually do not understand? There are two meanings for us gathering here together. First, to celebrate God's grace upon our ministry last year and give thanks to God. How great was God's grace by which we were able to serve him last year! We should remember all he has done for us and celebrate. Second, to pray together for God's work this year. Is there anything greater than praying? Can anyone do a greater work than praying? Can we spend our time better than praying? The value of praying cannot be measured by money or time. All time is given to us so that we may pray without ceasing. When North America Members gather together and pray in one heart, God will be surely pleased and bless us.

Each morning I pray, "Lord, so many young people in this land do not know the gospel and live as slaves to sin. So many beautiful young people are enslaved by money, lust and by drugs. They do not even know that they are in darkness, and die. Lord, use us to shine the light of the gospel, the light of the truth. Raise them with your life-giving word. Restore them and make them spiritual warriors to fight the holy battle for Christ." With a broken shepherd heart, let us all pray to God. May God bless us so that we may earnestly pray throughout this year. Amen!

"Oh, que rompieses los cielos y descendieras" (Isa 64:1a) 

Han pasado seis meses desde que comencé mis funciones como director general en Agosto pasado. Después de mi inauguración, pasé mi tiempo en Chicago con mi predecesor, el Dr. Abraham Kim, para conocer los deberes del D.G. Después de eso, visité cuatro países, México, Guatemala, Panamá y Venezuela, durante 10 días. A fines de septiembre, visité Corea y compartí el reporte de mi viaje a América Latina. El 25 de Noviembre, después de dar el mensaje de Año Nuevo 2019 en San Juan 17 en Chicago UBF, comencé a asistir a varias conferencias de Año Nuevo en 6 continentes. A lo largo de mi viaje, que continuó hasta mediados de Enero del 2019, pude transmitir el mensaje y establecer una relación amorosa con nuestros misioneros y líderes nativos.

Según mi experiencia en los últimos seis meses, puedo decir que nuestro ambiente espiritual nunca es fácil. Nos enfrentamos con un gran desafío espiritual. Corea ha desempeñado un papel importante en la misión mundial de UBF y, a medida que Corea se convierte en un país avanzado, su ambiente espiritual ahora es seco y difícil. A pesar del espíritu indomable de los miembros de UBF Corea y de los líderes laicos, no es fácil ver el crecimiento del ministerio. Además, como lo encontramos en el libro anual, la cantidad de asistentes a SWS el año pasado en Norteamérica se redujo ligeramente en un 2 por ciento. El ministerio en América Latina está creciendo. Sin embargo, aún enfrentamos problemas de salud y financieros de los misioneros, y también el problema de la sucesión de líderes a los líderes nativos. En África, la sucesión de liderazgo ha sido relativamente bien establecida, sin embargo, cómo continuar madurando el liderazgo nativo sigue siendo un tema importante de oración. En C nacion, las actividades misioneras se han reducido debido al estricto control de las autoridades. La persecución en el Medio Oriente se mantiene sin cambios, y algunas familias misioneras han regresado a sus hogares. Tenemos la tarea de cómo continuar movilizando a los líderes mayores como misioneros, y cómo ayudar a las generaciones más jóvenes a tener éxito y desarrollar el legado de su generación anterior. Existen grandes brechas generacionales y culturales en los campos de la misión. Los jóvenes en esta generación posmoderna son indiferentes al mensaje del evangelio. ¿Cómo podemos superar esto? No hay una respuesta fácil. Nos sentimos impotentes y tendemos a sentarnos sin hacer nada en la desesperación. Algunos líderes dicen que es posible que tengamos que observar y esperar otros 50 años hasta que cambie la marea espiritual.

Sin embargo, históricamente, nuestra difícil situación no es única. A principios del siglo XVIII, Inglaterra estaba muy corrompida espiritual y moralmente. En 1738, cuando John Wesley fue cambiado en el Aldersgate de Londres, el obispo Berkeley dijo: "la moral y la religión están tan corrompidas en la medida en que no se puede encontrar ningún precedente en ningún otro país Cristiano".

En tal país, Dios usó a John Wesley y renovó la nación. Desde finales del siglo XVIII, Inglaterra envió muchos misioneros a todos los rincones del mundo y abrió una gran era de misión. A principios del siglo XVIII, América del Norte también lo hizo. La gente perdió su temprana fe puritana y se corrompió espiritual y moralmente. En ese tiempo, Dios usó a un hombre, Jonathan Edwards, para revivir la nación. El punto no es si la generación fue corrupta o no, sino si Dios trabaja en esa generación o no. Sí, nuestra situación es difícil, pero si Dios interviene, puede haber un gran avivamiento. Por supuesto, el avivamiento espiritual depende totalmente de Dios; sin embargo, antes de que ocurra, siempre hay un punto en común: hay algunas personas que estudian profundamente la palabra de Dios y se arrepienten de sus pecados. Hay personas que anhelan el avivamiento y oran. De la misma manera ocurrio en el avivamiento en Pyeonyang en Corea y en el ministerio de la UBF en la década de 1980.

Entonces, lo que estoy tratando de decir es esto. La realidad es difícil y necesitamos la intervención de Dios. Dios necesita traer un avivamiento. Pero para que podamos verlo, no debemos hacer nada más. Sólo necesitamos volver a la Biblia. No solo debemos estudiar la Biblia de forma teórica o teológica, sino aceptarla como la palabra del Dios vivo y vivir vidas arrepentidas. Y necesitamos orar fervientemente. Entonces, con seguridad Dios nos dará su gracia, y en su tiempo soberano, traerá el avivamiento. Entonces nuestra oración es esta: "Oh, que rasgarías los cielos y descenderías" (Isa 64: 1a). Dios seguramente escuchará nuestras oraciones. Él responderá cuando creamos y preguntemos.

Muchas gracias por venir aquí. Algunos de ustedes vinieron desde Canadá o California. Podemos pensar ... ¿Qué obtenemos al ir a Chicago sacrificando nuestro tiempo y pagando la tarifa aérea? ¿Solo para escuchar los informes y levantar la mano para aprobar algo, cuyos detalles realmente no entendemos? Hay dos significados para que nos reunamos aquí juntos. Primero, para celebrar la gracia de Dios en nuestro ministerio el año pasado y darle gracias. ¡Qué grande fue la gracia de Dios con la que pudimos servirle el año pasado! Debemos recordar todo lo que ha hecho por nosotros y celebrar. Segundo, orar juntos por la obra de Dios este año. ¿Hay algo más grande que el orar? ¿Alguien puede hacer un trabajo más grande que orar? ¿Podemos pasar mejor nuestro tiempo que orando? El valor de la oración no se puede medir con dinero o tiempo. Se nos da todo el tiempo para que podamos orar sin cesar. Cuando los miembros de América del Norte se reúnan y oren en un solo corazón, Dios seguramente estará complacido y nos bendecirá.

Cada mañana oro: "Señor, muchos jóvenes en esta tierra no conocen el Evangelio y viven como esclavos del pecado. Muchos jóvenes hermosos están esclavizados por el dinero, la lujuria y las drogas. Ni siquiera saben que están en la oscuridad y que están muriendo. Señor, úsanos para hacer brillar la luz del evangelio, la luz de la verdad. Levántalos con tu palabra vivificadora. Restáuralos y conviértelos en guerreros espirituales para luchar en la santa batalla por Cristo ". Con el corazón quebrantado de un pastor, oremos todos a Dios. Que Dios nos bendiga para que podamos orar fervientemente a lo largo de este año. ¡Amén!

“원하건대 주는 하늘을 가르고 강림하시고” (사64:1a)

지난 해 ISBC 기간 중인 8월 12일에 하나님의 은혜로 취임한 이후 6개월이 지났습니다. 취임 후 약 2주간에 걸쳐 시카고 본부에 있으며 전임자 김아브라함 선교사님으로 부터 업무에 대한 설명을 들었습니다. 그 이후 중남미 코디네이터와 몇 지부장님들의 권고를 받고, 9/4-14 약 열흘에 걸쳐 멕시코, 과테말라, 파나마, 베네주엘라를 심방하였습니다. 9월 말에는 한국을 방문하여, 10/1에 중남미 선교보고를 하였습니다. 11/25 시카고 주일 예배에서 요한복음 17장으로 신년말씀을 섬긴 후 이후 1월 중순까지 6대륙 지부장 수양회에 참석하여 말씀을 전하고 선교사님들 현지 목자님들과 사랑의 관계성을 견고히 하였습니다.

지난 6개월간 대표직분을 수행하며 느낀 점은, 누구나 다 공감하시겠지만 우리의 영적 환경이 녹록치 않다는 것입니다. 우리는 지금 거대한 영적 도전에 직면해 있습니다. 선교파송국인 한국도 이제 선진국이 되어 복음의 수용력이 예전 같지 않습니다. 한국의 스탭목자님들이나 리더들도 불굴의 의지로 캠퍼스 역사에 도전하고 있지만 역사의 성장이 쉽지 않은 가운데 있습니다. 북미 지역도 오늘 통계에도 나와 있듯이 전년도 주일 예배수가 2%정도 감소되었습니다. 중남미 지역은 성장하고 있지만, 선교사님들의 건강과 물질 자립의 문제, 현지 리더십 계승 문제들이 있습니다. 아프리카 지역이 현지 리더십이 비교적 잘 이루어지고 있지만 세워진 현지 목자들이 어떻게 더 성숙한 리더십을 발휘하도록 돕느냐가 관건입니다. C 국은 더 엄격한 검열로 현지 선교사역이 위축되고 있습니다. 중동 지역도 기독교에 대한 제한은 여전합니다. 이 가운데 20여 년간 기도의 등불을 켜고 있다가 철수한 가정들도 있고 남아 있는 가정들의 장래 문제도 생기고 있습니다. 물론 몇 군데 괄목하게 성장하는 지부나 나라도 있습니다. 그러나 현실을 보면 어느 하나 쉬운 지역이 없습니다. 

전체적으로 우리는 차세대 제자양성의 큰 기도제목이 있습니다. 나이가 들어가는 1세대 리더들을 어떻게 계속하여 선교 자원으로 동원시킬 것이며, 우리의 후진들로 하여금 어떻게 1세대의 사역을 잘 계승하도록 도울 것인가 하는 과제입니다. 1세대와 차세대 간의 세대차, 선교지에서의 문화차가 큽니다. 포스트모던 시대에 사는 젊은이들의 복음에 대한 무관심이 강합니다. 이러한 문제에 대한 쉬운 답은 없습니다. 그래서 우리는 그저 무력감을 느끼고 낙심하고 부정적인 생각을 갖기 쉽습니다. 현재의 복음 역사는 어렵고 한 50년은 기다려봐야 될 것 같기도 합니다. 

그런데 역사상으로 볼 때 이러한 시대 분위가 지금이 유일한 것은 아닙니다. 1700년대 초 영국은 영적으로 도덕적으로 매우 타락했습니다. 웨슬리가 회심하던 해인 1738년에 Berkeley 감독은 “영국의 도덕과 종교는 일찍이 어느 기독교 국가에서도 유래가 없을 정도로 부패했다”고 말했습니다. 그런 영국에 하나님께 존 웨슬레를 쓰셔서 영적, 도덕적으로 새롭게 하셨습니다. 영국은 1700년대 말부터 전 세계에 선교사를 파송하며 위대한 개신교 선교시대를 열었습니다. 1700년대 초 미국도 마찬가지였습니다. 사람들은 초기의 청교도 신앙을 잃어버리고 영적, 도덕적으로 타락하였습니다. 이때 하나님께서 조나단 에드워즈를 쓰셔서 대각성 운동을 일으키시고 미국을 새롭게 하셨습니다. 문제는 이것입니다. 시대의 타락이 문제가 아니라 하나님이 역사하시는가 아닌가 하는 것입니다. 하나님은 18세기 초 영국과 미국에 영적 부흥을 이루시고 위대한 기독교 선교 시대를 여셨습니다. 현재의 우리가 처한 영적 환경이 어렵지만 하나님이 역사하시면 위대한 부흥이 일어납니다. 그런데 위대한 부흥의 역사는 물론 하나님이 주권적으로 이루시는 것이지만 사람들 가운데 이루어진 한 가지 공통점이 있습니다. 그것은 하나님의 말씀을 깊이 배우고 그 말씀 앞에서 회개하는 사람들이 있었다는 것입니다. 영적 부흥을 갈망하며 기도하는 사람들이 있었다는 것입니다. 1907년 한국의 평양대부흥도 그랬고 우리의 1980년대 UBF 부흥도 그러했습니다.

그래서 저의 결론은 이렇습니다. 현실은 어렵고 우리에게는 하나님의 개입이 필요합니다. 하나님이 강력한 부흥의 역사를 이루시는 것이 필요합니다. 그러기 위해 우리가 할 일은 다른 것이 아닙니다. 성경으로 돌아가는 것입니다. 성경을 이론적으로, 현학적으로 공부하지 않고 정말 살아계신 하나님의 말씀을 받아들이고 그 말씀 앞에 깊이 회개하는 삶을 사는 것입니다. 그리고 간절히 기도하는 것입니다. 그러면 하나님이 은혜를 주셔서 당신의 주권적인 시점에 우리 가운데 부흥의 역사를 이루실 것입니다. 우리의 기도는 이것입니다. “원하건대 주는 하늘을 가르고 강림하소서". "Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down"(Isa 64:1a) 하나님이 우리에게 오시는 것이 부흥입니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도를 들으십니다. 믿고 기도할 때 반드시 이루어주십니다. 

오늘 많은 시간과 물질을 들여 이곳에 오신 여러분들께 감사를 드립니다. 이런 생각이 들 수 있습니다. 시카고까지 시간과 비용을 들여서 가서 하는 일이 무엇이지? 보고를 듣고 내용도 잘 모르지만 여하튼 손을 들어주고 승인하고 오는 것 아닌가? 우리가 여기 모인 것에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 첫째, 하나님이 지난해 우리에게 베풀어 주신 은혜를 감사하고 축하하는 것입니다. 하나님이 베푸신 은혜가 얼마나 큽니까? 하나님이 주신 영육간의 축복으로 지난 한 해 주님을 잘 섬기게 하는 신 것을 축하하고 즐거워하는 것입니다. 둘째, 올해의 하나님의 역사를 위해 합심하여 기도하는 것입니다. 기도만큼 위대한 일이 세상에 또 있을까요? 기도만큼 많은 일을 하는 것이 또 있을까요? 기도에 들이는 시간보다 더 귀하게 시간을 사용할 곳이 있을까요? 기도는 돈에 비교할 수 없고 시간에 비교할 수 없습니다. 우리의 모든 시간은 기도를 위해 있다고 해도 과언이 아닙니다. 우리 모임의 대의원들이 한자리에 모여 합심하여 기도할 때 하나님이 이를 기뻐하시고 반드시 축복하여 주실 것을 믿습니다.

저는 아침마다 이런 기도를 합니다. “주님, 너무 많은 젊은 영혼들이 복음을 모르고 죄에 종된 삶을 살고 있습니다. 이 땅의 아름다운 청춘들이 돈에 종이 되고, 정욕의 종이 되고, 마약의 종이 되어 있습니다. 그들은 자신이 어둠에 있다는 것도, 종이 되어 있다는 것도 모르고 살다가 죽어가고 있습니다. 주여, 우리를 사용하사 이들에게 복음의 빛, 진리의 빛을 밝히시며, 거룩한 하나님의 말씀으로 이들을 일으켜 세우시고 회복시키셔서 이들을 거룩한 영전의 전사들로 사용하여 주소서!” 우리 다 같이 믿음의 기도를 드립시다. 올 한해 기도하는 우리들을 하나님이 축복해 주시길 기도합니다.
