2019 New Year Message
 

THAT ALL OF THEM MAY BE ONE

John 17:1-26

Key verse John 17:21

"...that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me."

Before Jesus died on the cross, he had the last supper with his disciples. During the supper, Jesus gave them his last teaching, the “Upper Room Discourse,” which is recorded in John's gospel, from chapters 13 to 16. Now here, in chapter 17, Jesus prays. In the gospels, we find many accounts of Jesus praying. In particular, he always withdrew to a quiet place to pray after an important event, such as the feeding of the five thousand (Mt 14:22). We also find that Jesus taught his disciples the Lord's Prayer. Yet we are rarely told the details of what Jesus specifically prayed. Today's passage is probably the only account where we find the content of his prayer. Praying means offering one's earnest desire to God. When faced with having to die the very next day, what does Jesus pray for? What is the earnest desire revealed in his prayer? Through this passage, may God help us to know Jesus' heart's desire for us. 

I. Jesus' prayer for himself (1-5)

Look at verse 1. "After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.’" After Jesus finished teaching his disciples, he looks toward heaven and prays. How does he begin his prayer? "Father." In a few hours, Jesus will be arrested, and after standing on trial, he will be crucified. Jesus knew that. It must have been painful for him knowing that he should end his life through such a cruel method of execution at the age of 33. Yet he does not blame God for that. At his most unbearable time of suffering, Jesus completely trusts in God and comes before him saying, "Father." Jesus never doubts God’s love in any situation. "Father, the time has come." Since the beginning of his messianic life, Jesus has moved toward the hour - the hour of his death on the cross.

How does Jesus view his crucifixion? "Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you." Jesus prays that through his death on the cross he may be glorified. God the Son came into this world in the appearance of a man. Now he offers himself as an atoning sacrifice for the sin of the world. Yet that is not the end. He will defeat the power of death and rise again. Jesus, the greatest man, became the humblest man, and through the cruelest death, won the most glorious victory. It is in this way that Jesus reveals his glory. Through him being glorified Jesus also prays that God may be glorified. The eventual purpose of Jesus’ life was to glorify God. God the Father was pleased with Jesus and granted him authority over all people. Therefore, Jesus can give eternal life to all those the Father has given him (2).

What is eternal life? Look at verse 3. "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." Eternal life does not just mean living forever. Those who enter hell will also live there forever. Eternal life means knowing the only true God, and Jesus Christ. Here to “know” means to know personally with the heart, not just with the head. For this reason, those who know Jesus and, through Jesus, know God the Father, already have eternal life. I believe that even though we live in this world with our bodies which are restricted by time and space, we already have eternal life. Do you believe that you have eternal life? Is it real to you? The moment we personally believe in Jesus we receive eternal life, and as we come to know him more deeply we come to enjoy it more abundantly. Jesus has come so that his people may have life, and have it to the full (Jn 10:10). May God help us each and every day to know Jesus more deeply, and enjoy his life more abundantly.

As we read in verse 1, Jesus prayed that he would glorify God through his death on the cross. Actually he also lived the life that glorified God. Look at verse 4. "I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do." Jesus glorified God on earth by completing the work the Father gave him to do. What was the work God gave Jesus?

First, it was to reveal God the Father to the world (6). God is spirit. He is invisible. We as sinners, cannot see the holy God. Therefore, in order to let us know him, God revealed himself through his creation, and through the Scriptures. Most importantly, he also revealed himself fully through his Son (Heb 1:1,2). All the words Jesus spoke were from God the Father. All the power Jesus had was from God the Father. The Bible says Jesus is the exact representation of God's being (Heb 1:3). Those who have seen Jesus have seen God the Father (Jn 14:10). Jesus came to reveal God to the world

The second work given to Jesus was, as the Messiah of the world, to save all men from their sins. Jesus came as the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29). In order to fulfill the will of God, he denied himself and offered himself as the Lamb of God. In this way, he redeemed from sin all who believe in him. Jesus came to save all men from their sins.

The third work Jesus completed was to raise the twelve disciples who would become the foundation of the church. Jesus wanted the gospel to be preached to the whole world through his disciples. He wanted all people to hear the gospel and be saved. For this purpose Jesus came to raise the Twelve.

Jesus devoted his whole life to completing the task God gave him to do. In completing his work, he was not swayed by the pressures of his generation. He did not quarrel or cry out but silently and patiently committed himself to God. On the cross, just before he breathed his last, he said, "It is finished." Jesus showed us the perfect example how we should live. No matter what other people may say, we believe that the life committed to completing the task God gave us to do is the most precious. We do not have time to hesitate. Life is too short to waste. May God help us to do our best to complete the work God gave us to do.

II. Jesus' prayer for his disciples (6-19)

From verse 6, Jesus prays for his disciples. "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word" (6). Here the words "those whom you gave me out of the world" refer to the Twelve (12). They were appointed by Jesus. Yet Jesus says that they are basically those God gave him out of the world. Jesus taught his disciples so that they would know God. It was because they belonged to God (9). We belong to God. God forms the spirit of man within him (Zec 12:1). The Bible students we serve are not those whom we just met at the campus. They are not our possession. They are God's possession.

Look at verse 10. "All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them." Jesus’ words that “all I have is yours, and all you have is mine” are an amazing claim that Jesus is God. The Son and the Father are two separate persons. Yet they are one. This is a mysterious truth which is beyond understanding. Jesus received glory through the disciples - through their changed lives and their testimony that he is the Christ. Jesus receives glory through our changed lives and our testimony about him.

What then does Jesus specifically pray for the disciples?

First, “protect them by the power of your name.” Look at verse 11. "I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name - the name you gave me - so that they may be one as we are one." While Jesus was on earth he protected his disciples from the devil. Now as he is about to leave the world, he prays that the Holy Father would protect them. Look at verse 11b again. "...so that they may be one as we are one." Jesus prays that they may be one as the Father and the Son are one. What can we learn here? Becoming one or becoming divided is not a matter of personality or character. Division is what happens when we are not protected from the devil's attack. The devil causes believers to envy, hate, and quarrel. The devil causes believers to distrust each other and cools down our love for God. The devil causes the community to become divided and eventually collapse. We are vulnerable and we need God's protection.

Another reason why the disciples need God's protection is that the world hates them. Look at verse 14. "I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world." Why are the disciples hated by the world? It is because they live by the word of God. When we live by the word of God we are persecuted in the world (2Ti 3:12). But we must know that we were called to suffer for doing good (1Pe 2:21). If we fear the world, it will ensnare us. We will be drawn to please the world and we will end up leaving God. Therefore, we must take a clear stance. Jesus does not pray that God may take them out of the world but that God will protect them from the evil one (15).

Second, "sanctify them by the truth." Look at verse 17. "Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth." What does it mean to "sanctify them"? It means to help the disciples not to follow the pattern of the world but to live holy lives before God. Further, it means to help them to offer themselves as living sacrifices to God (Ro 12:1). How can the disciples be sanctified? "Sanctify them by the truth." They can be sanctified by the truth. What is the truth? The truth is the word of God. In order to live holy lives before God, we must have the word of God.

Some people are zealous for God. They have a strong desire to do God’s work. Yet they do not study the word diligently. They just want to serve God on their own terms. But when they do not have the word of God, many things go wrong. It is not good to have zeal without knowledge (Po 19:2). Also some people just want to pray all the time. That is not good either. If anyone turns a deaf ear to the word of God, the Bible says even his prayers will be detestable (Pr 28:9). Without the word of God it is impossible to live a holy life.

Why do many believers live nominal Christian lives? Why do people stop growing spiritually? Why do we not have joy and fruit in our lives of faith? There is only one answer, and that is, that we do not eat the word of God deliciously. The word of God gives us joy. It enables us to be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2Ti 3:17). As long as we keep learning the word of God we will not get old. Instead we will come to be full of the energy of youth. Personally, every morning I receive spiritual energy from three sources. First, from daily bread and personal prayer. Second, from memorizing Bible verses. Third, from having faith in God holding onto Mk 11:22, “have faith in God.” The word of God gives us the strength and wisdom we need. The word of God is the fountain of all joy, strength and wisdom. May God help us to study the word of God fervently and obey it so that our community will continue to be filled with spiritual energy and the wisdom of God.

III. Jesus' prayer for the believers (20-26)

From verse 20, Jesus prays for those who will believe in him through his disciples. Look at verse 21. "...that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me." Jesus' prayer for all believers is not that they may lead comfortable lives or that they may be successful and famous in the world. Jesus prays for a totally different thing - that they may be one.

Now are we not sitting here together? On Sundays, do we not gather together for worship service? Do we not meet in the name of Christ? Does this mean that we are one? No. Jesus' prayer has a deeper meaning. It means that all of us may be one, just as the Father is in Jesus and Jesus is in the Father. In mathematics, if A belongs to B, and B belongs to A, it means A is B.

The Father and the Son are two different persons but they are completely one. Each one of us is an independent individual. The characteristic of an individual is unique. Each individual is different. We all differ in our personalities and talents. We differ in character and appearance. There is nobody who is identical to another person in the world. We are also all self-centered. There is a story. One day, two pastors quarreled on the street. They quarreled a lot but could not agree. One pastor said, "OK, that’s enough. Now you go your way! I will go the Lord's way!" Everyone thinks that he was right. How can we be one?

First, we can be one when we have the same life purpose. What is the ultimate purpose of our lives? It is to glorify God. He is the Creator. He is the living God. Our life came from him and will return to him. To praise him and worship him forever is the greatest purpose of our lives. One of the main reasons why believers are not one is that they live for their own glory and not for the glory of God. When we give up the desire to seek our own glory and start seeking God's glory we can be one.

Second, when we humble ourselves and serve each other we can be one. Jesus was one with the Father by humbly and absolutely obeying the Father. The Father was one with the Son by loving him and entrusting to him all judgment, so that all would honor the Son (Jn 5:22,23). When we humbly serve others we can be one. When someone says to another person, “I want to serve you as your servant,” will he say, "No, I don't like you. Go away"? The way to be one is to humbly serve others first, assuming the lower position while exalting others. But when we do that what usually comes to our minds? "Good for him but what about me? I lose, I sacrifice, I become lowly, no one acknowledges me... what do I get?" When that happens, what must we believe? We must believe that God knows everything. He sees everything and knows everything. If he knows all, that’s it. Period! If God wants to give honor he can give it. He can give blessing and all kinds of grace to those he wants to give. When we believe that this is our God, we can lower ourselves and gladly serve others with humility. 1 Peter 5:5 says, “Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’” We believe that those who receive God's blessing are truly blessed. May we completely become one by humbly serving others.

Third, in order to be one we should acknowledge that we all are different. Imagine an orchestra. Everyone plays different instruments. If all the members played the violin, they would not make a beautiful harmony. If they all beat drums, they will quickly bore the audience. All the orchestra members follow the instruction of the conductor yet make a beautiful harmony by playing different instruments. Likewise, we differ in our characters and talents. Who is our conductor? Our Lord Jesus Christ! In a narrower concept, our conductor is the spiritual identity we all share together. Our identity is very simple: UBF. As our name means we are a campus mission community. And we accept the Bible as the word of the living God. We are not an organization like a business corporation. We are a community like a family. We believe that we have been called to obey Jesus’ world mission command through laymen ministry. Under this clear spiritual identity, when we acknowledge our differences and co-work together we can become one.

If the essentials are the same, we should tolerate the differences of the non-essentials. Our true enemy is not within but without. If we conflict with our co-workers over trivial issues, we will get exhausted and have no remaining energy to fight our real enemy outside. We should co-work with one heart and mind to work for the glory of God. When we forgive and love first the person whom we feel most difficult to be one with, God will surely be pleased and bless us. May God help us to forgive each other, love one another, and build up a community of perfect unity.

What will happen when we become one? Look at verse 21b. "...so that the world may believe that you have sent me." The key message of the gospel we preach is God's love. People see whether we just preach God's word with our mouths or we actually practice our teaching in our lives. In the first century, the Christians were an absolute minority. Compared with the Roman Empire, they were a tiny group of people. The Roman Empire seemed to last forever. Yet it was conquered by Christianity. What power did Christianity have that it could conquer Rome? It was the power of love. Roman fathers just threw newborn babies away when they looked weak. The Christians took the abandoned babies and brought them up with love. The ethics of the Romans was not strong. Many husbands were not faithful and had mistresses. However, Christian husbands loved their wives and remained faithful. Christians dearly loved one another. The Romans saw this and said, "Look! How the Christians love! They are ready to die for each other!" What they saw was the love of Christ. Through the Christian community they came to know Jesus' love and believed him as Christ.

Evangelism cannot just be done with words. It also needs to be done with genuine love. If someone says, "I find this community is full of love that I cannot find elsewhere; I want to belong to this group,” that is the most effective way of evangelism. People see and know how we live. If they find our community cold and indifferent to each other, who will want to stay with us? Do you want to remain in such a community? That kind of community has already failed as a church of Christ. I pray that we may truly forgive each other, love, and humbly serve each other. May God help us to love one another until other people say, "Look! How dearly UBF people love one another! They are ready to die for each other. I want to belong to them! I want to be loved by Christ!"

What did Jesus do for us to be one? Look at verse 22. "I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one:..." Jesus gave us the glory. What glory did he give us? The glory that we become the children of God. Therefore, becoming one means becoming one as the family and children of God. What is the eventual purpose of us becoming one as children of God? Look at verse 23. "I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." The words "I in them and you in me" mean that the Father, the Son and the children all become one. This is the ultimate purpose of God’s salvation of the world. That is, all believers by becoming one with the Father and the Son participate in the utmost bliss and glory of God and enjoy him forever and ever. This community is a loving spiritual community that abounds with God love.

In conclusion, what was Jesus’ prayer for us? Still now Jesus is praying for us at the right hand of God. What is he praying for? For our comfortable lives and success in the world? I believe he is praying that all of us may be one, just as the Father is in Jesus and Jesus is in him. Becoming one with the love of Christ is the most important work of God that we have been given. Complete unity itself is our most powerful message to the world. In the coming year 2019, may God help us, as those who received God's redeeming love, to embrace each other, dearly love one another, and build up a loving spiritual community. Amen!

Juan 17: 1-26
Versículo clave: Juan 17:21. "... para que todos sean uno; como tú, oh Padre, en mí, y yo en ti, que también ellos sean uno en nosotros; para que el mundo crea que tú me enviaste".

Antes de que Jesús muriera en la cruz, tuvo la última cena con sus discípulos. Durante la cena, Jesús les dio su última enseñanza, el "Discurso del aposento alto", que está registrado en el evangelio de Juan en los capítulos 13 al 16. Aquí, en el capítulo 17, Jesús ora. En los evangelios encontramos muchos relatos de Jesús orando. En particular, siempre se retiraba a un lugar tranquilo para orar después de un evento importante, como la alimentación de los cinco mil (Mt 14:22). También encontramos que Jesús enseñó a sus discípulos la oración del Señor. Sin embargo, rara vez nos dicen los detalles específicos de lo que Jesús oró. El pasaje de hoy es probablemente el único relato donde encontramos el contenido de su oración. Orar significa ofrecer a Dios nuestro deseo más ferviente. Un día antes de su muerte, Jesús oraba ¿Por cuál tópico oró? ¿Cuál fue su deseo ardiente revelado en esa oración? Oro para que a través de este pasaje Dios nos ayude a conocer el deseo del corazón de Jesús para nosotros.  

I. La oración de Jesús por sí mismo (1-5)

Miren el versículo 1. "Estas cosas habló Jesús, y levantando los ojos al cielo, dijo: Padre, la hora ha llegado; glorifica a tu Hijo, para que también tu Hijo te glorifique a ti;". Después de que Jesús terminó de enseñar a sus discípulos, miró hacia el cielo y oró ¿Cómo comienza su oración? "Padre". En unas pocas horas Jesús sería arrestado, y después de comparecería en un juicio, y sería crucificado. Jesús lo sabía. Debe haber sido doloroso para él saber que debería terminar su vida con un método de ejecución tan cruel a la edad de 33 años. Sin embargo, él no culpó a Dios por eso. En su momento de sufrimiento más insoportable, Jesús confió completamente en Dios y se le presentó diciendo: "Padre". Jesús no dudó del amor de Dios en ninguna situación. "Padre, ha llegado el momento". Desde el comienzo de su vida mesiánica Jesús siempre se movió hacia la hora de su muerte en la cruz.

¿Cómo ve Jesús su crucifixión? "Glorifica a tu Hijo, para que tu Hijo te glorifique". Jesús ora para que, a través de su muerte en la cruz, él sea glorificado. Dios el Hijo vino a este mundo en la apariencia de un hombre. Ahora se ofrece a sí mismo como un sacrificio expiatorio por el pecado del mundo. Sin embargo, ese no es el final. Él derrotaría el poder de la muerte y resucitaría. Jesús, el hombre más grande, se convirtió en el hombre más humilde y, a través de la muerte más cruel, obtuvo la victoria más gloriosa. Así es como Jesús revela su gloria. Siendo él glorificado, Jesús también ora para que Dios sea glorificado. El propósito final de la vida de Jesús fue glorificar a Dios. Dios el Padre estaba complacido con Jesús y le otorgó autoridad sobre todas las personas. Por lo tanto, Jesús puede dar vida eterna a todos aquellos que el Padre le ha dado (2).

¿Qué es la vida eterna? Miren el versículo 3. "Y esta es la vida eterna: que te conozcan a ti, el único Dios verdadero, y a Jesucristo, a quien has enviado". La vida eterna no solo significa vivir para siempre. Los que entren en el infierno también vivirán allí para siempre. La vida eterna significa conocer al único Dios verdadero, ya Jesucristo. Aquí, “saber” significa conocer personalmente con el corazón, no solo con la cabeza. Por esta razón, los que conocen a Jesús y, a través de Jesús, conocen a Dios Padre, ya tienen vida eterna. Creo que aunque vivamos en este mundo con nuestros cuerpos restringidos por el tiempo y el espacio, ya tenemos vida eterna. ¿Crees que tienes vida eterna? ¿Es real para ti? En el momento en que creemos personalmente en Jesús, recibimos la vida eterna y, a medida que lo conocemos más profundamente, lo disfrutamos más abundantemente. Jesús ha venido para que su pueblo tenga vida y la tenga en abundancia (Jn 10:10). Que Dios nos ayude a conocer a Jesús más profundamente todos los días y a disfrutar más abundantemente de su vida.

Como leímos en el versículo 1, Jesús oró para glorificar a Dios a través de su muerte en la cruz. En realidad él también vivió una vida que glorificó a Dios. Veamos el versículo 4. "Yo te he glorificado en la tierra; he acabado la obra que me diste que hiciese". Jesús glorificó a Dios en la tierra al completar la obra que el Padre le encomendó. ¿Cuál fue el trabajo que Dios le dio a Jesús?

Primero, revelar a Dios el Padre al mundo (6). Dios es espíritu. Él es invisible. Nosotros, como pecadores, no podemos ver al Dios santo. Por lo tanto, para poder conocerlo, Dios se reveló a sí mismo a través de su creación y de las Escrituras. Lo más importante es que también se reveló plenamente a través de su Hijo (Hebreos 1:1-2). Todas las palabras que Jesús habló fueron de Dios el Padre. Todo el poder que Jesús tenía era de Dios el Padre. La Biblia dice que Jesús es la representación exacta del ser de Dios (Hebreos 1:3). Los que han visto a Jesús han visto a Dios Padre (Jn 14:10). Jesús vino al mundo para revelarle a Dios.

El segundo trabajo dado a Jesús fue, como el Mesías del mundo, salvar a todos los hombres de sus pecados. Jesús vino como el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo (Jn 1:29). Para cumplir la voluntad de Dios, se negó a sí mismo y se ofreció a sí mismo como el Cordero de Dios. De esta manera, redimió del pecado a todos los que creen en él. Jesús vino a salvar a todos los hombres de sus pecados.

El tercer trabajo que completó Jesús fue levantar a los doce discípulos que se convertirían en el fundamento de la iglesia. Jesús quería que el evangelio fuera predicado a todo el mundo a través de sus discípulos. Quería que todas las personas escuchen el evangelio y sean salvos. Para este propósito Jesús vino a levantar a los Doce.

Jesús dedicó toda su vida a completar la tarea que Dios le había encomendado. Al completar su trabajo, no se dejó llevar por las presiones de su generación. No peleó ni gritó, sino que silenciosamente y pacientemente se comprometió con Dios. En la cruz, justo antes de su último respiro, dijo: "Consumado es". Jesús nos mostró el ejemplo perfecto de cómo debemos vivir. No importa lo que otras personas puedan decir, creemos que la vida comprometida, a completar la tarea que Dios nos dio para hacer, es la más preciosa. No tenemos tiempo para dudar. La vida es demasiado corta para desperdiciarla. Que Dios nos ayude a hacer nuestro mejor esfuerzo para completar el trabajo que Dios nos dio para hacer.

II. La oración de Jesús por sus discípulos (6-19).

A partir del versículo 6 Jesús ora por sus discípulos. "He manifestado tu nombre a los hombres que del mundo me diste; tuyos eran, y me los diste, y han guardado tu palabra" (6). Aquí las palabras "los hombres que del mundo me diste" se refieren a los Doce (12). Ellos fueron nombrados por Jesús. Sin embargo, Jesús dice que son básicamente los que Dios le dio desde el mundo. Jesús enseñó a sus discípulos para que pudieran conocer a Dios. Esto fue porque pertenecían a Dios (9). Nosotros pertenecemos a Dios. Dios forma el espíritu del hombre dentro de él (Zac 12:1). Los estudiantes de la Biblia a los que servimos no son aquellos que acabamos de conocer en el campus. No son nuestra posesión. Ellos son la posesión de Dios.

Miren el versículo 10. "y todo lo mío es tuyo, y lo tuyo mío; y he sido glorificado en ellos". Las palabras de Jesús de que "todo lo que tengo es tuyo, y todo lo que tienes es mío" son una afirmación sorprendente de que Jesús es Dios. El Hijo y el Padre son dos personas separadas. Sin embargo, son uno. Esta es una verdad misteriosa que está más allá de la comprensión. Jesús recibió la gloria a través de los discípulos, a través de sus vidas cambiadas y sus testimonios de que él es el Cristo. Jesús recibe gloria a través de nuestras vidas cambiadas y nuestro testimonio acerca de él.

Entonces, ¿Qué oración específica hace Jesús por los discípulos?

Primero, "protégelos por el poder de tu nombre". Miren el versículo 11. "Y ya no estoy en el mundo; mas éstos están en el mundo, y yo voy a ti. Padre santo, a los que me has dado, guárdalos en tu nombre, para que sean uno, así como nosotros". Mientras Jesús estaba en la tierra, protegió a sus discípulos del diablo. Ahora que estaba a punto de abandonar el mundo, ora para que el Santo Padre los proteja. Miren el versículo 11b de nuevo. "... para que sean uno como nosotros somos uno". Jesús ora para que sean uno como el Padre y el Hijo son uno. ¿Qué podemos aprender aquí? Convertirse en uno o dividirse no es una cuestión de personalidad o carácter. La división es lo que sucede cuando no estamos protegidos del ataque del diablo. El diablo hace que los creyentes envidien, odien y peleen. El diablo hace que los creyentes desconfíen unos de otros y enfría nuestro amor por Dios. El diablo hace que la comunidad se divida y finalmente colapse. Somos vulnerables y necesitamos la protección de Dios.

Otra razón por la cual los discípulos necesitan la protección de Dios es que el mundo los odia. Miren el versículo 14. "Yo les he dado tu palabra; y el mundo los aborreció, porque no son del mundo, como tampoco yo soy del mundo". ¿Por qué los discípulos son odiados por el mundo? Porque viven por la palabra de Dios. Cuando vivimos por la palabra de Dios, somos perseguidos en el mundo (2Ti 3:12). Pero debemos saber que fuimos llamados a sufrir por hacer el bien (1Pe 2:21). Si tememos al mundo, éste nos atrapará. Seremos atraídos para complacer al mundo y terminaremos dejando a Dios. Por lo tanto, debemos tomar una postura clara. Jesús no ora para que Dios los saque del mundo, sino para que Dios los proteja del maligno (15).

En segundo lugar, "santifícalos por la verdad". Veamos el versículo 17. "Santifícalos en tu verdad; tu palabra es verdad.". ¿Qué significa "santifícalos"? Significa ayudar a los discípulos a no seguir el patrón del mundo, sino a vivir vidas santas ante Dios. Además, significa ayudarles a ofrecerse como sacrificios vivos a Dios (Ro 12:1). ¿Cómo pueden ser santificados los discípulos? "Santifícalos en tu verdad". Pueden ser santificados por la verdad. ¿Cuál es la verdad? La verdad es la palabra de Dios. Para vivir vidas santas delante de Dios, debemos tener la palabra de Dios.

Algunas personas son celosas de Dios. Tienen un fuerte deseo de hacer la obra de Dios. Sin embargo, no estudian la palabra diligentemente. Ellos solo quieren servir a Dios en sus propios términos. Pero cuando no tienen la palabra de Dios, muchas cosas salen mal. No es bueno tener celo sin conocimiento (Prov. 19:2). También algunas personas solo quieren orar todo el tiempo. Eso tampoco es bueno. Si alguien hace oídos sordos a la Palabra de Dios, la Biblia dice que incluso sus oraciones serán detestables (Prov. 28:9). Sin la palabra de Dios es imposible vivir una vida santa.

¿Por qué muchos creyentes viven vidas cristianas nominales? ¿Por qué la gente deja de crecer espiritualmente? ¿Por qué no tenemos gozo y fruto en nuestras vidas de fe? Solo hay una respuesta, y es que no comemos la palabra de Dios con delicia. La palabra de Dios nos da gozo. Nos permite estar bien equipados para todo buen trabajo (2Ti 3:17). Mientras sigamos aprendiendo la Palabra de Dios, no envejeceremos. En cambio, llegaremos a estar llenos de la energía de la juventud. Personalmente, cada mañana recibo energía espiritual de tres fuentes. Primero, del pan diario y de la oración personal. Segundo, de memorizar versículos de la Biblia. Tercero, de tener fe en Dios aferrándome a Marcos 11:22, "ten fe en Dios". La palabra de Dios nos da la fortaleza y la sabiduría que necesitamos. La palabra de Dios es la fuente de todo gozo, fortaleza y sabiduría. Que Dios nos ayude a estudiar la Palabra de Dios con fervor y la obedezcamos para que nuestra comunidad continúe llena de energía espiritual y la sabiduría de Dios.

III. La oración de Jesús por los creyentes (20-26)

A partir del versículo 20 Jesús ora por aquellos que creen en él a través de sus discípulos. Miren el versículo 21 "...para que todos sean uno; como tú, oh Padre, en mí, y yo en ti, que también ellos sean uno en nosotros; para que el mundo crea que tú me enviaste". La oración de Jesús por todos los creyentes no es que puedan llevar una vida cómoda o que puedan ser exitosos y famosos en el mundo. Jesús ora por una cosa totalmente diferente, para que sean uno.

¿Ahora no estamos sentados aquí juntos? ¿Los domingos no nos reunimos para el servicio de adoración? ¿No nos reunimos en el nombre de Cristo? ¿Significa esto que somos uno? No. La oración de Jesús tiene un significado más profundo. Significa que todos podemos ser uno, así como el Padre está en Jesús y Jesús está en el Padre. En matemáticas, si A pertenece a B y B pertenece a A, significa que A es B.

El Padre y el Hijo son dos personas diferentes pero son completamente uno. Cada uno de nosotros es un individuo independiente. La característica de un individuo es única. Cada individuo es diferente. Todos diferimos en nuestras personalidades y talentos. Diferimos en carácter y apariencia. No hay nadie que sea idéntico a otra persona en el mundo. También somos todos egocéntricos. Hay una historia, un día, dos pastores se pelearon en la calle, se pelearon mucho pero no pudieron estar de acuerdo. Un pastor dijo: "Está bien, es suficiente. ¡Ahora vete por tu camino! ¡Yo iré por el camino del Señor!" Todo el mundo piensa que tiene la razón. ¿Cómo podemos ser uno?

Primero, podemos ser uno cuando tenemos el mismo propósito de vida. ¿Cuál es el propósito final de nuestras vidas? Es glorificar a Dios. Él es el Creador. Él es el Dios viviente. Nuestra vida vino de él y volveremos a él. Alabarle y adorarle por siempre es el propósito más grande de nuestras vidas. Una de las razones principales por las que los creyentes no son uno es que viven para su propia gloria y no para la gloria de Dios. Cuando abandonamos el deseo de buscar nuestra propia gloria y comenzamos a buscar la gloria de Dios, podemos ser uno.

Segundo, cuando nos humillamos y nos servimos unos a otros podemos ser uno. Jesús fue uno con el Padre obedeciéndolo humilde y absolutamente. El Padre era uno con el Hijo amándolo y confiándole todo juicio, para que todos honraran al Hijo (Jn 5, 22, 23). Cuando servimos humildemente a los demás podemos ser uno. Cuando alguien le dice a otra persona: "Quiero servirte como tu sirviente", ¿dirá "No, no me gustas. Vete"? La manera de ser uno es servir humildemente a los demás primero, asumiendo la posición más baja mientras se exalta a los demás. Pero cuando hacemos eso, ¿qué nos viene a la mente? "Bien por él, pero ¿qué hay de mí? Pierdo, me sacrifico, me siento humillado, nadie me reconoce... ¿qué obtengo?" Cuando eso sucede, ¿qué debemos creer? Debemos creer que Dios lo sabe todo. Él lo ve todo y lo sabe todo. Si él lo sabe todo, eso es todo, ¡punto! Si Dios quiere dar honor, él puede darlo. Él puede dar bendiciones y todo tipo de gracia a aquellos que quiere dar. Cuando creemos que este es nuestro Dios, podemos rebajarnos y servir con gusto a los demás humildemente. 1 Pedro 5:5 dice: “Igualmente, jóvenes, estad sujetos a los ancianos; y todos, sumisos unos a otros, revestíos de humildad; porque: Dios resiste a los soberbios, Y da gracia a los humildes". Creemos que aquellos que reciben la bendición de Dios son verdaderamente bendecidos. Oro que nos volvamos completamente Uno sirviendo humildemente a los demás.

Tercero, para ser uno debemos reconocer que todos somos diferentes. Imagina una orquesta. Todos tocan diferentes instrumentos. Si todos los miembros tocaran el violín, no harían una hermosa armonía. Si todos golpean los tambores, aburren rápidamente al público. Todos los miembros de la orquesta siguen las instrucciones del director de orquesta pero hacen una hermosa armonía al tocar diferentes instrumentos. Asimismo, nos diferenciamos en nuestros caracteres y talentos. ¿Quién es nuestro conductor? ¡Nuestro Señor Jesucristo! En un concepto más estrecho, nuestro conductor es la identidad espiritual que todos compartimos. Nuestra identidad es muy simple: UBF. Nuestro nombre significa que somos una comunidad misionera del campus. Y aceptamos la Biblia como la palabra del Dios viviente. No somos una organización como una corporación empresarial. Somos una comunidad como una familia. Creemos que hemos sido llamados a obedecer el mandato de la misión mundial de Jesús a través del ministerio laico. Bajo esta clara identidad espiritual, cuando reconocemos nuestras diferencias y trabajamos juntos podemos convertirnos en uno.

Si lo esencial es lo común, debemos tolerar las diferencias de lo no esencial. Nuestro verdadero enemigo no está dentro sino fuera. Si estamos en conflicto con nuestros compañeros de trabajo por cuestiones triviales, nos agotaremos y no tendremos energía restante para luchar contra nuestro enemigo real en el exterior. Debemos colaborar con un solo corazón y mente para trabajar por la gloria de Dios. Cuando perdonamos y amamos primero a la persona con la que nos sentimos más difíciles de ser uno, Dios seguramente estará complacido y nos bendecirá. Que Dios nos ayude a perdonarnos unos a otros, amarnos unos a otros y construir una comunidad de unidad perfecta.

¿Qué pasará cuando nos volvamos uno? Miremos el versículo 21b. "...para que el mundo crea que tú me enviaste". El mensaje clave del evangelio que predicamos es el amor de Dios. La gente ve si simplemente predicamos la palabra de Dios con la boca o si realmente practicamos nuestra enseñanza en nuestras vidas. En el primer siglo, los cristianos eran una minoría absoluta. Comparados con el Imperio Romano, eran un pequeño grupo de personas. El Imperio Romano parecía durar para siempre. Sin embargo, fue conquistada por el cristianismo. ¿Qué poder tenía el cristianismo para conquistar Roma? El poder del amor. Los padres romanos simplemente tiraron a los bebés recién nacidos cuando parecían débiles. Los cristianos se llevaron a los bebés abandonados y los criaron con amor. La ética de los romanos no era fuerte. Muchos esposos no eran fieles y tenían amantes. Sin embargo, los esposos cristianos amaron a sus esposas y se mantuvieron fieles. Los cristianos se amaban profundamente unos a otros. Los romanos vieron esto y dijeron: "¡Miren! ¡Cómo aman los cristianos! ¡Están listos para morir unos por otros!" Lo que vieron fue el amor de Cristo. A través de la comunidad cristiana llegaron a conocer el amor de Jesús y creyeron en Cristo.

El evangelismo no se puede hacer solo con palabras. También hay que hacerlo con amor genuino. Si alguien dice: "Descubrí que esta comunidad está llena de un amor que no puedo encontrar en ningún otro lugar; quiero pertenecer a este grupo", esa es la forma más efectiva de evangelizar. La gente ve y sabe cómo vivimos. Si encuentran nuestra comunidad fría e indiferente entre nosotros, ¿Quién querrá quedarse con nosotros? ¿Quieres permanecer en una comunidad así? Ese tipo de comunidad ya ha fracasado como iglesia de Cristo. Oro que podamos perdonarnos verdaderamente, amarnos, y servirnos humildemente unos a otros. Que Dios nos ayude a amarnos unos a otros hasta que otras personas digan: "¡Mira! ¡Cómo se aman las personas de UBF! Están listos para morir el uno por el otro. ¡Quiero pertenecer a ellos! ¡Quiero ser amado por Cristo!

¿Qué hizo Jesús para que nosotros fuéramos uno? Miren el versículo 22 "La gloria que me diste, yo les he dado, para que sean uno, así como nosotros somos uno." Jesús nos dio la gloria. ¿Qué gloria nos dio? La gloria de convertirnos en hijos de Dios. Por lo tanto, volverse uno significa ser uno como la familia y los hijos de Dios. ¿Cuál es el propósito final de convertirnos en uno como hijos de Dios? Miren el versículo 23. "Yo en ellos, y tú en mí, para que sean perfectos en unidad, para que el mundo conozca que tú me enviaste, y que los has amado a ellos como también a mí me has amado". Las palabras "Yo en ellos y tú en mí" significan que el Padre, el Hijo y los hijos se vuelven uno. Este es el propósito final de la salvación de Dios para el mundo. Es decir, todos los creyentes al volverse uno con el Padre y el Hijo participan en la mayor dicha y gloria de Dios y lo disfrutan perpetuamente. Esta es una comunidad espiritual amorosa que abunda en el amor de Dios.

En conclusión, ¿cuál fue la oración de Jesús por nosotros? Todavía Jesús está orando por nosotros a la diestra de Dios. ¿Por qué está orando? ¿Por nuestras vidas cómodas y éxito en el mundo? Creo que él está orando para que todos seamos uno, así como el Padre está en Jesús y Jesús está en él. Ser uno con el amor de Cristo es la obra más importante de Dios que se nos ha dado. La unidad completa en sí misma es nuestro mensaje más poderoso para el mundo. Que en este año 2019 Dios nos ayude, como aquellos que recibieron el amor redentor de Dios, a abrazarnos, amarnos mutuamente y construir una comunidad espiritual amorosa. ¡Amén!

"아버지여, 아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이 그들도 다 하나가 되어 우리 안에 있게 하사 세상으로 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하옵소서"

예수님은 십자가에 달리시기 전날 밤에 만찬을 하시며 제자들에게 최후의 가르침을 주셨습니다. 이 가르침을 ‘다락방 강화’라고 하는데, 요한복음 13장부터 16장까지 기록되어 있습니다. 그리고 이제 17장에서 기도를 하십니다. 복음서에 보면 예수님이 기도하셨다는 기록이 많이 나타납니다. 특히 오병이어로 오천 명을 먹이신 것 같은 큰 역사 후에는 언제나 조용한 곳으로 가서 기도하셨습니다(마14:22). 또한 제자들에게 어떻게 기도해야 할지 가르쳐주셨습니다. 그러나 예수님 자신이 구체적으로 무엇을 위해 기도하셨는지에 대한 그 내용이 기록된 것은 아주 적습니다. 아마 본문의 내용이 유일한 것으로 보입니다. 기도란 무엇입니까? 자신의 소원을 하나님께 아뢰는 것입니다. 이제 하루 후면 십자가에 달리시는 예수님의 기도내용이 무엇입니까? 이 기도에 나타난 예수님의 간절한 소원은 무엇입니까? 우리가 오늘 말씀을 통해 우리에 대한 예수님의 소원을 배우고 영접하기를 기도합니다.

I. 예수님 자신을 위한 기도(1-5)

1절을 보십시오. "예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 눈을 들어 하늘을 우러러 이르시되 아버지여 때가 이르렀사오니 아들을 영화롭게 하사 아들로 아버지를 영화롭게 하게 하옵소서." 예수님은 모든 것을 가르치신 후 이제 눈을 들어 하늘을 우러러 보시며 기도하십니다. 예수님의 기도의 첫마디가 무엇입니까? "아버지여!" 예수님은 이제 수 시간 후면 체포되어 다음 날이면 끔찍한 십자가 처형을 당하십니다. 예수님은 이를 잘 아셨습니다. 33세의 젊은 나이에 십자가에 달려 죽게 된다는 사실에 마음이 심히 고통이 되셨을 것입니다. 그러나 예수님은 하나님께 대한 원망이 조금도 없었습니다. 가장 심각한 고난의 때에 하나님을 전적으로 신뢰하고 그에게 나아가 고백하십니다. "아버지여!"

"아버지여 때가 이르렀사오니!" 여기서 때는 예수님이 십자가에 달려 죽으실 때를 가리킵니다. 예수님의 공생애는 처음부터 이때를 향하여 움직여 오신 삶이었습니다. 이제 드디어 그 때가 온 것을 아시고 아버지께 순종하여 십자가를 지기로 결단하십니다. 그런데 예수님은 그 십자가 죽음을 어떻게 보시나요? "아들을 영화롭게 하사 아들로 아버지를 영화롭게 하게 하옵소서." 예수님은 십자가 사건을 통해 자신을 영화롭게 해 주시길 기도합니다. 아들 하나님은 이 땅에 사람의 모양으로 오셨습니다. 이제 인류의 죄를 대속하는 제물로 자신을 드리십니다. 그러나 그것이 끝이 아닙니다. 예수님은 죽음 권세를 깨고 부활하십니다. 가장 위대하신 분이 가장 낮아지사, 가장 비참한 죽음을 통해, 가장 위대한 승리를 하시는 이 십자가 사건을 통해 그 영광을 높이 드러내십니다. 또한 이를 통해 궁극적으로 아버지의 영광이 드러나기를 기도하십니다. 하나님은 구속역사를 순종하신 예수님에게 온 인류에 대한 권세를 주셨습니다. 이에 예수님은 그를 믿는 모든 자에게 영생을 주십니다(2).

그러면 영생이란 무엇입니까? 3절을 보십시오. "영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그가 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다." 영생은 그저 영원히 사는 것이 아닙니다. 지옥에 들어가는 자들도 그곳에서 영원히 삽니다. 영생은 유일하신 참 하나님과 그가 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것입니다. 여기서 안다는 것은 머리로만 아는 것이 아니라 인격적으로 깊이 아는 것을 말합니다. 이런 점에서 예수님을 알고, 예수님을 통해 하나님을 아는 분들은 이미 영생을 얻은 것입니다. 우리는 이 땅에서 육신을 입고 시간의 한계 가운데 살지만 또한 동시에 이미 시간을 초월한 영생의 소유자임을 믿습니다. 여러분은 이미 영생을 얻은 것을 믿으십니까? 이 영생이 실제적이십니까? 영생은 예수님을 인격적으로 아는 순간 이미 얻은 것이요, 그 분을 더 알아감에 따라 더욱 풍성히 누리는 것입니다. 예수님은 양으로 생명을 얻게 하고 더 풍성히 얻도록 하기 위해 오셨습니다(요10:10). 우리가 예수님을 더 깊이 알아가고 더 사랑하는 가운데, 주님이 주시는 풍성한 생명을 더욱 누리기를 기도합니다.

1절에서 예수님은 십자가 사건을 통해서 아버지를 영화롭게 하기를 기도하셨는데 실상 예수님은 이미 이 땅에서 아버지께 영광 돌리는 삶을 사셨습니다. 어떻게 그렇게 하셨습니까? 4절을 보십시오. "아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어 아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니." 예수님은 아버지께서 하라고 주신 일을 이루심으로 아버지를 영화롭게 하셨습니다. 아버지가 하라고 주신 일이 무엇입니까?

첫째, 아버지를 세상에 나타내는 것입니다(6). 하나님은 영이십니다. 보이지 않으십니다. 하나님은 자신을 우리에게 알려주시기 위해 만물을 통해 계시하시고, 또한 성경을 통해 알려주셨습니다. 여기에 더하여 이 모든 날 마지막 때에 아들을 통해 자신을 온전히 계시하셨습니다(히1:1,2). 예수님이 하신 말씀은 모두 하나님이 주신 말씀입니다. 예수님이 행하신 모든 능력은 하나님이 주신 능력입니다. 예수님은 하나님의 본체의 형상이십니다(히1:3). 예수님을 본 자는 아버지를 본 자입니다(요14:10). 예수님은 그의 가르침과 삶을 통해 우리에게 하나님을 나타내셨습니다. 이로써 우리가 하나님을 알고 영원한 생명을 얻게 되었습니다. 예수님은 아버지를 나타내는 이 일을 온전히 이루셨습니다.

둘째, 메시야로서 구속 역사를 이루시는 것입니다. 예수님은 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양으로 오셨습니다. 그는 세상에 오셔서 사람처럼 살아주셨습니다. 하나님의 뜻을 이루시고자 자기를 부인하고 죽기까지 순종하셨습니다. 이 일을 온전히 이루셨습니다.

셋째, 예수님은 교회의 기초가 되는 열두 제자를 양성하셨습니다. 이들을 통해 온 세상에 복음이 전파되게 하셨습니다.

예수님은 이상과 같은 아버지를 세상에 나타내는 일, 구속 역사를 이루시는 일, 그리고 열두 제자를 양성하시는 일을 온 마음을 다해 이루고자 힘쓰셨습니다. 시대의 분위기에 흔들리지 않으셨습니다. 다투지도 않고 들레지도 않으시고 오직 그 일을 위해 침묵 정진하셨습니다(마12:19). 예수님은 십자가에서 숨을 거두시며 말씀하셨습니다. "다 이루었다!" 예수님의 삶을 볼 때, 다른 사람이 어떻게 말하든 하나님이 하라고 하신 일을 묵묵히 감당하는 삶이 가장 귀한 삶임을 믿습니다. 우리에게는 머뭇거릴 시간이 없습니다. 낭비하기에는 인생이 너무 짧습니다. 예수님과 같이 우리도 하나님이 우리 각자에게 하라고 주신 일을 온전히 이루어 하나님께 영광돌리길 기도합니다.

II. 제자들을 위한 기도(6-19)

6절부터 제자들을 위해 기도하십니다. "세상 중에서 내게 주신 사람들에게 내가 아버지의 이름을 나타내었나이다. 그들은 아버지의 것이었는데 내게 주셨으며 그들은 아버지의 말씀을 지키었나이다(6)." 여기서 "세상 중에서 내게 주신 사람들"은 열두 제자를 가리킵니다(12). 그들은 예수님이 택하여 세운 자들입니다. 그러나 예수님은 그들이 아버지께서 자기에게 주신 자들이라고 고백하십니다. 그들이 근본적으로 하나님의 것이기 때문에 예수님은 그들이 하나님이 어떤 분이신가를 깊이 알도록 가르쳐주셨습니다. 하나님은 우리를 지으신 분이요 우리의 소유주이십니다. 우리가 섬기는 양들도 그저 우연히 캠퍼스에서 만난 사람이 아닙니다. 내 소유가 아닙니다. 하나님의 소유로서 잠시 우리에게 맡기신 것입니다. 우리가 하나님이 우리에게 잠시 맡겨주신 분들을 존중하며 경외심과 겸손함으로 잘 섬기기를 기도합니다. 그들이 하나님을 잘 알도록 섬기기를 기도합니다.

오늘 본문에는 예수님이 하나님이 보내신 분이라는 말씀이 6번 반복됩니다(3,8,18,21,23,25). 예수님은 하나님이 보내신 분, 곧 전권대사이십니다. 전권대사는 그를 보낸 왕과 동일한 권세를 갖고 있습니다. 10절을 보십시오. "내 것은 다 아버지의 것이요 아버지의 것은 내 것이온데 내가 그들로 말미암아 영광을 받았나이다." 그러면 예수님의 제자들에 대한 구체적인 기도제목이 무엇입니까?

첫째, “아버지께서 그들을 보전해 주소서.” 11절을 보십시오. "나는 세상에 더 있지 아니하오나 그들은 세상에 있사옵고 나는 아버지께로 가옵나니 거룩하신 아버지여 내게 주신 아버지의 이름으로 그들을 보전하사 우리와 같이 그들도 하나가 되게 하옵소서." 예수님은 세상에 계시는 동안 제자들을 마귀의 유혹으로부터 보호하셨습니다. 이제 예수님이 세상을 떠나시므로 이후로는 아버지께서 그들을 보호해 주시기를 기도하십니다. 그들을 보전하사 어떻게 되도록 기도하십니까? 11절 마지막 부분을 다시 한 번 보십시오. 제자들에게 하나님이 보호하심이 필요한 또 다른 이유는 세상이 그들을 미워하기 때문입니다. 14절을 보십시오. "내가 아버지의 말씀을 그들에게 주었사오매 세상이 그들을 미워하였사오니 이는 내가 세상에 속하지 아니함 같이 그들도 세상에 속하지 아니함으로 인함이니이다." 세상이 제자들을 미워하는 이유가 무엇입니까? 이는 그들이 하나님의 말씀대로 살기 때문입니다. 신자들이 세상에서 말씀을 따라 살게 되면 미움을 받게 되어 있습니다(딤후3:12). 이는 근본적으로 세상이 하나님을 미워하기 때문입니다. 그러나 신자는 이런 세상에서 선을 행함으로 고난을 받기 위해 부르심을 받았습니다(벧전2:21). 그러므로 우리는 세상에 대해 단호한 자세를 취해야 합니다. 세상을 두려워하다보면 그들의 마음을 맞추기 위해 하나님을 떠나게 됩니다. 사람을 두려워하면 올무에 걸리게 됩니다(잠29:25). 예수님은 제자들을 세상에서 데려가주시길 기도하지 않으십니다. 그들이 세상에 살되 악에 빠지지 않도록 보전해주시길 기도하십니다(15).

둘째, “그들을 진리로 거룩하게 하옵소서.” 17절을 보십시오. "그들을 진리로 거룩하게 하옵소서 아버지의 말씀은 진리니이다." 거룩하게 한다는 것이 무슨 뜻일까요? 이는 세상의 풍조대로 살지 않고 하나님 앞에서 구별된 삶을 살도록 하는 것입니다. 더 나아가 자신의 몸을 거룩한 산제사로 하나님께 드리는 삶을 살도록 하는 것입니다(롬12:1). 예수님은 제자들이 어떻게 거룩하게 되도록 기도하십니까? "진리로 거룩하게 하옵소서." 진리가 무엇입니까? 하나님의 말씀입니다. 신자들이 세상과 구별된 삶을 살기 위해서 반드시 필요한 것은 하나님의 말씀입니다. 말씀을 떠나서 거룩한 삶을 사는 것은 불가능합니다. 어떤 사람은 하나님을 향한 열심이 특별합니다. 소원이 강합니다. 그러나 말씀공부를 게을리 합니다. 자기 나름대로 열심히 하나님을 섬기고자 합니다. 그러나 말씀이 없으면 그릇 가게 되어 있습니다. 지식이 없는 소원은 선하지 못합니다(잠19:2). 또 어떤 사람은 기도만 열심히 하고자 합니다. 그것도 그렇게 좋은 것이 아닙니다. 사람이 귀를 돌려 하나님의 말씀을 듣지 아니하면 그의 기도도 가증합니다(잠28:9).

많은 사람들이 명목상의 신자로 살아가는 이유가 무엇입니까? 왜 사람들은 영적 성장을 멈춥니까? 왜 신앙생활의 기쁨이 없고 열매가 없습니까? 거기에는 단 한 가지 이유가 있을 뿐입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 맛있게 잘 섭취하지 않기 때문입니다. 하나님의 말씀은 우리에게 참 기쁨을 줍니다. 우리로 하여금 온전하게 하며 모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추게 합니다(딤후3:17). 사람은 배우는 동안 늙지 않습니다. 언제나 청춘과 같은 힘이 넘칩니다. 저는 개인적으로 하루의 삶을 시작할 때 세 군데에서 영적 힘을 얻습니다. 첫째는 일용할양식을 먹고 기도함으로 힘을 얻습니다. 둘째는 말씀을 암송하며 새롭게 깊이 깨달을 때마다 영적 힘을 얻습니다. 셋째는 마가복음 11:22절 "하나님을 믿으라" 말씀을 새롭게 영접함으로 힘을 얻습니다. 말씀은 우리에게 필요한 모든 힘과 지혜를 주십니다. 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 맹렬히 공부하고 영접함으로 영적 힘과 지혜가 넘치는 공동체로 계속하여 성장하기를 기도합니다.

III. 신자들을 위한 기도(20-26)

20절부터 예수님은 제자들을 통해 자신을 믿게 될 신자들 곧 우리들을 위해 기도하십니다. 그들에 대한 기도 내용이 무엇입니까? 21절을 보십시오. "아버지여, 아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이 그들도 다 하나가 되어 우리 안에 있게 하사 세상으로 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하옵소서." 신자들에 대한 예수님의 기도제목은 그들이 편안하고 안락한 삶을 사는 것이 아닙니다. 세상의 높은 자리를 차지하고 성공하는 것이 아닙니다. 전혀 다른 한 가지를 위해 기도하십니다. 그것은 그들이 모두 하나가 되는 것입니다.

그런데 여기 우리가 이렇게 한 자리에 모여 있지 않습니까? 주일에는 같이 모여 예배를 드리지 않습니까? 같은 UBF 이름 아래 모이지 않습니까? 이것이 예수님이 의미하는 하나 되는 것인가요? 아닙니다. 예수님의 기도는 더 깊은 의미가 있습니다. 그것은 "아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이" 하나가 되는 것입니다. 아버지와 아들은 어느 정도 하나이십니까? "아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이" 하나입니다. 수학에서 A가 B에 속하고, B가 A에 속하면 A=B입니다. 아버지와 아들은 두 인격이지만 완전히 하나입니다.

우리는 모두 독립적인 인격체입니다. 인격체의 특징은 서로 다르다는 것입니다. 개성이 다르고 은사가 다릅니다. 성격이 다릅니다. 모양이 다릅니다. 세상에 같은 모양의 사람, 같은 성격의 사람은 하나도 없습니다. 또 우리는 모두 자기중심적입니다. 어떤 두 목회자가 언쟁을 하였습니다. 아무리 다투어도 결론이 나지 않았습니다. 그러자 한 목회자가 말합니다. "자, 이제 그만 둡시다. 당신은 당신의 길을 가시오! 나는 주의 길을 가겠소!" 누구나 자기가 옳다고 생각합니다. 이런 우리가 어떻게 하나가 될 수 있을까요?

첫째, 우리의 인생목적이 같을 때 하나가 될 수 있습니다. 우리 인생목적은 무엇입니까? 오직 하나님의 영광을 위해 사는 것입니다. 이는 하나님이 유일한 창조주시요 살아계신 단 한분의 신이기 때문입니다. 우리 인생은 그에게서 나오고 그에게로 돌아갑니다. 창조주 하나님을 영원토록 찬양하고 경배하는 것이 인생들의 목적입니다. 신자들이 하나 되지 못하는 가장 큰 이유는 하나님의 영광을 위해 살기보다 자기 야심, 자기 영광을 위해 살기 때문입니다. 자기를 내려놓고 오직 하나님의 영광만을 구할 때 우리는 하나가 될 수 있습니다.

둘째, 겸손히 낮아져 상대방을 섬길 때 하나가 될 수 있습니다. 예수님은 겸손히 아버지께 순종하사 아버지와 하나가 되셨습니다. 아버지는 아들을 지극히 사랑하시고 모든 심판권을 다 아들에게 맡기심으로 인생들이 아들을 공경하도록 하셨습니다(요5:22,23). 아버지도 아들을 섬기심으로 하나가 되셨습니다. 우리도 겸손히 낮아져 상대방을 섬길 때 하나가 될 수 있습니다. 내가 낮아져 상대방을 섬기고, 상대방을 높이고자 할 때 하나가 되지 않겠습니까? 내가 그의 종이 되어 섬기겠다는데 “아, 나는 네가 싫어. 도저히 함께 할 수 없어” 하는 사람이 있을까요? 하나가 되는 길은 내가 먼저 낮아져 상대방을 위해 희생하는 삶을 사는 것입니다. 그런데 그럴 때 어떤 마음이 듭니까? “그러면 나는 뭐지? 나만 손해보고, 희생하고, 낮아지고, 아무도 나를 인정해주지 않고...나는 뭐지?” 하는 생각이 듭니다. 이때 무엇을 믿어야 합니까? 하나님을 믿어야 합니다. 하나님은 다 아십니다. 하나님이 모르시는 것은 아무 것도 없습니다. 하나님이 아시면 다 끝나는 것입니다. 하나님은 주고자 하시는 자에게 명예와 존귀와 각종 은혜를 풍성히 주십니다. 하나님이 축복하시면 막을 자가 없습니다. 우리가 이 하나님을 믿을 때 기꺼이 낮아져 다른 사람을 기쁨으로 섬길 수 있습니다. 베드로전서 5:5절은 말씀합니다. "젊은 자들아 이와 같이 장로들에게 순종하고 다 서로 겸손으로 허리를 동이라 하나님은 교만한 자를 대적하시되 겸손한 자들에게는 은혜를 주시느니라." 하나님의 은혜를 받는 자가 참으로 복됨을 믿습니다. 이 믿음으로 서로 낮아져 섬김으로 온전히 하나 되기를 기도합니다.

셋째, 서로 다름을 인정하는 것입니다. 오케스트라를 보십시오. 그들은 다른 악기를 연주합니다. 모두 다 바이올린만 한다면 아름다운 화음을 낼 수 없습니다. 작은 북만 연주한다면 청중들이 금방 지루해할 것입니다. 오케스트라 단원들은 지휘자의 지시에 따르는 것 외에는 자기 악기로 소리를 내면서 아름다운 화음을 만들어냅니다. 우리도 모두 개성이 다르고 은사가 다릅니다. 우리에게 있는 지휘자가 누구이십니까? 우리 주 예수님이십니다. 좁게는 UBF라는 공동체 정체성입니다. 이 정체성이 말하는 바는 첫째, 우리는 대학생 선교공동체입니다. 둘째, 성경을 하나님의 말씀으로 절대적으로 믿고 순종하는 모임입니다. 셋째, 회사 같은 조직이 아니라 가족과 같은 공동체입니다. 주님의 세계선교 명령에 순종하고자 기도하는 평신도 선교 모임입니다. 이러한 근본적인 정체성 하에 조금씩 서로 다른 점을 존중하며 동역할 때 우리는 아름다운 하나가 될 수 있습니다.

본질적인 것이 같으면 비본질적인 것이 조금 달라도 우리는 서로를 용납할 수 있어야 합니다. 우리의 적은 모임 내부에 있지 않고 외부에 있습니다. 내부의 동지들과 사소한 문제로 갈등한다면 그런 일에 힘을 다 소진하고 정작 우리의 적과 싸울 때 아무런 힘을 쓸 수 없습니다. 우리는 하나님의 영광을 위해 한 마음으로 동역하는 공동체가 되어야 합니다. 겉모습만 동역하는 것이 아니라 마음으로 겸손히 낮아져 섬기며 사랑하는 공동체가 되어야겠습니다. 내가 먼저 하나 되기 어려운 그 한 사람을 주님의 사랑으로 용서하고, 사랑하며 하나 될 때, 우리 주님이 기뻐하시고 축복해 주실 것을 믿습니다.

그러면 우리가 주님의 사랑 안에서 하나 될 때 어떠한 일이 일어나나요? 21b을 보십시오. "세상으로 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하옵소서." 우리가 전하는 복음의 핵심이 무엇입니까? 독생자를 보내신 하나님의 사랑입니다. 외부 사람들은 우리가 말로만 사랑을 전하는가 아니면 실제로 우리가 사랑하는 삶을 사는가를 봅니다. 1세기 당시 기독교인들은 적은 무리였습니다. 거대한 로마제국에 비하면 그들은 참으로 초라한 집단이었습니다. 로마는 영원할 것 같았습니다. 그런데 결국 로마는 기독교에 의해 정복당했습니다. 기독교에 무슨 힘이 있었기에 그렇게 되었을까요? 사랑의 힘입니다. 로마시대에는 유약한 어린 아이가 태어나면 아버지는 아기를 갖다 버리도록 했습니다. 기독교인들은 그 버려진 아기를 데려다 길렀습니다. 로마시대에는 성에 대한 윤리의식이 약했습니다. 로마 남자들은 첩을 두었고 정절에 대한 개념이 약했습니다. 그러나 기독교인 남편들은 자기 아내만을 사랑하며 정절을 지켰습니다. 로마 사람들이 이러한 기독교인들의 삶을 보고 말했습니다. '보라! 이들은 얼마나 뜨겁게 서로 사랑하는가! 이들은 서로를 위해 기꺼이 죽을 준비가 되어 있지 않은가!" 이들이 본 사랑은 바로 그리스도의 사랑이었습니다. 그들은 기독교 공동체를 통하여 예수님의 사랑을 알게 되었고 예수님을 그리스도로 믿게 되었습니다.

전도는 말로만 하는 것이 아닙니다. 사랑으로 하는 것입니다. “아, 내가 이 공동체에 와 보니 여기에는 세상에서 볼 수 없는 사랑이 넘치는구나. 나도 여기에 속하고 싶다!” 이것이 효과적인 전도입니다. 사람들은 모임에 와 보면 다 압니다. 냉랭한 모임, 서로에 대해 무관심한 공동체라고 생각하면 누가 이곳에 남겠습니까? 여러분이면 그런 모임에 담기겠습니까? 그러한 공동체는 그리스도의 사랑의 공동체로서 이미 실패하고 있는 것입니다. 말로만 하는 것은 힘이 없습니다. 우리 모임이 말로만이 아니라 실제 삶에서 서로 용서하고 사랑하며 겸손으로 허리를 동이고 섬기는 모임이 되기를 기도합니다. “보라 저 UBF 사람들은 얼마나 서로 뜨겁게 사랑하는가! 이들은 서로를 위해 기꺼이 죽을 준비가 되어 있지 않은가! 나도 이 모임에 담기고 싶다. 나도 그리스도의 사랑을 받고 싶다!” 이런 말을 듣기까지 우리가 서로 사랑하기를 기도합니다.

그러면 예수님은 우리가 하나 되게 하시기 위해 무엇을 하셨나요? 22절을 보십시오. "내게 주신 영광을 내가 그들에게 주었사오니 이는 우리가 하나가 된 것 같이 그들도 하나가 되게 하려 함이니이다." 예수님은 우리들에게 영광을 주셨습니다. 무슨 영광을 주셨나요? 하나님의 자녀가 되는 영광을 주셨습니다. 그러므로 우리가 하나 되는 것은 하나님의 가족이요 하나님의 자녀로서 하나 되는 것입니다. 그렇게 되는 궁극적인 목적이 무엇입니까? 23절을 보십시오. "곧 내가 그들 안에 있고 아버지께서 내 안에 계시어 그들로 온전함을 이루어 하나가 되게 하려 함은 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것과 또 나를 사랑하심 같이 그들도 사랑하신 것을 세상으로 알게 하려 함이로소이다." 예수님이 우리들 안에, 아버지가 예수님 안에 계신다는 말은 아버지와 아들과 우리 자녀들이 모두 하나가 된다는 것입니다. 이것이 하나님이 세상을 구원하시는 궁극적인 목적입니다. 곧, 우리 모든 믿는 자들이 아버지 하나님과 예수 그리스도와 모두 온전히 하나가 되어, 하나님의 지고한 복락과 영광에 영원히 참여하도록 하시는 것입니다. 세상에서 그러한 신자들의 공동체는 아버지의 사랑이 충만한 사랑의 공동체 입니다.

결론적으로, 새해에 우리의 영적 방향이 무엇이 되어야 하겠습니까? 예수님은 지금도 하나님 보좌 우편에서 우리를 위해 무엇을 위해 기도하고 계실까요? 우리가 많은 일을 하고 편안하게 살고 세상에서 성공하는 것을 위해 기도하고 계실까요? "아버지여 저들이 하나 되게 하소서”라고 기도하고 계실 줄 믿습니다. 서로 사랑하며 하나가 되는 것, 그것이 가장 중요한 하나님의 일을 하는 것임을 믿습니다. 그것이 세상에 대한 가장 강력한 선교 메시지임을 믿습니다. 올 한해, 우리가 예수님의 구속의 사랑을 덧입은 자들로서, 서로 용납하고 한 마음으로 뜨겁게 사랑하는 공동체가 되기를 간절히 기도합니다. 아멘!
