2018 New Year’s Message

YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER TO BE MY WITNESSES

Acts 1:1-14
Key Verse 1:8

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts is a history of the early church. It tells us real stories of a spiritual war. The church faced inward and outward challenges. But with the Risen Jesus’ promises, “You will receive power and you will be my witnesses,” the church grew beautifully and expanded triumphantly. The story of Acts has continued for the past two millennia, and it will continue until King Jesus comes again. Adoniram Judson, one of the earliest Western missionaries to Burma, faced many hardships. But he said, “The future is as bright as the promises of God.” May the Holy Spirit help us to start the New Year with a bright prospect, holding on to King Jesus’ promises anew.

    I. The Glory of the Resurrection and the Kingdom of God (1-3)

Verses 1-3 tell us what the Risen Jesus did for his apostles during the 40 days before his ascension. First, he planted faith in the resurrection. Jesus presented himself to the apostles to give many convincing proofs that he was physically alive. His resurrection declares that he is the Son of God (Ro 1:4). It proves that he died to take away the sin of the world, and a perfect redemption comes to all who believe. The Risen Jesus is the King who has conquered death and received all authority in heaven and on earth (Mt 28:18). Death is the most powerful enemy that has controlled all humans. But Jesus Christ has freed all his people from the power of death by his atoning death and resurrection. God has exalted us to rule with Christ by his power of the resurrection in the spiritual realms (Eph 2:6). His resurrection gives us a living hope of our glorious resurrection in a spiritual body like him (1Co 15:49).

Second, he planted a glorious hope of the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is the theme of the Bible. Jesus’ first message was, “The time has come, the kingdom of God has come near” (Mk 1:15). Jesus bound up the brokenhearted, set the oppressed free, and healed the sick. He proclaimed good news of God’s grace, welcoming sinners and outcasts as God’s family members. The kingdom of God came on earth in people’s lives through his ministry. After his resurrection, Jesus spoke about how God’s kingdom would come to all peoples of all nations through the preaching of repentance and forgiveness of sins in his Name (Lk 24:47).

The kingdom of God is also the restored paradise in the new heaven and the new earth to come. Jesus showed a vision of the perfected kingdom of God to Apostle John. It is shining with the glory of God (Rev 21:11). There will be no more night, for God will be the light. In the present world, all creation is subjected to decay, groaning in the struggles for survival. (Ro 8:20-21) In the new world to come, however, there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. We will see God the Father and our Lord Jesus face to face. We will eat the fruits of the tree of life beside the river of the water of life (Rev 22:1-5). We will walk on streets of pure gold, passing by the pearly gates (Rev 21:11-21). There, all of God’s people, along with the multitudes of angels and all creatures will render eternal praise, honor and glory to the Father and to King Jesus who was slain and is glorified (Rev 5:9-13).    

Planting faith in the resurrection and the glorious hope of the kingdom of God were Jesus’ last courses of discipleship for his apostles. After the apostles received the living hope, their lives were never the same. The glorious hope of the resurrection and the kingdom of God shone like a bright light in their souls. By God’s great mercy, we are set free from the power of death and are given this living hope. We should always keep the glorious hope of the resurrection and the kingdom of God to shine in our souls.  

     II. The Promise of the Holy Spirit (4-7)

On one occasion, Risen Jesus gave them this command, “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (4-5) Apparently, the apostles had decided to leave Jerusalem. Jesus understood their fear of the Jewish authorities and their sense of failure to stand with him during his suffering. Nevertheless, Jesus commanded them to stay in Jerusalem, waiting for a wonderful gift from the Father--the Holy Spirit.

In the Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit came upon God’s servants who were chosen for specific purposes. By his blood shed on the cross, Jesus opened the New Testament era which had been prophesied to come (Jer 31:31-34). Jesus opened a new and living way for us to approach God (Heb 10:20). Jesus also sent the Holy Spirit from the Father to come to us unlimitedly. The Holy Spirit would come to dwell in God’s people forever (Jn 14:16). Praise Jesus!

Then the apostles asked Jesus, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” (6) The Jews had long waited for a Messianic kingdom. It was prophesied that the Messianic age would begin with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Joel 2:28-29). So, when Jesus spoke about the Holy Spirit, the apostles were thrilled. But Jesus said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (7-8) Today tension is high in Palestine due to the announcement of the president of the United States concerning Jerusalem. Jesus didn’t deny the restoration of Israel. God’s promises concerning Israel would be fulfilled according to God’s timetable. Then Jesus told them what was the most important and urgent thing for them and his church. It was to receive power from the Holy Spirit and to be Jesus’ witnesses to bring God’s kingdom to all peoples of the world.

    III. You Will Be My Witnesses (8-14)

Let’s read verse 8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” In these promises, our King Jesus showed a blueprint of God’s grand world salvation plan. He also announced that the age of the Holy Spirit is the age of salvation for all peoples through the witness of his church. The Holy Spirit has come to empower his church for this purpose. Since these are the last words of our Lord Jesus, I want to think about two things with you.

First, God’s broken heart for the perishing world. In the Old Testament times, God wanted Israel to be his witnesses by becoming a holy nation through their obedience to his word (Ex 19:6, Isa 43:10). But they disobeyed and failed. God sent his one and only Son into the world as the promised Christ and his faithful and true witness (Rev 3:14). Jesus testified to God’s truth and his grace. Finally, he testified to God’s saving love for the world through his death on the cross. Because of the Son’s obedience, salvation has come to all who believe in his blood (Heb 5:8, Ro 3:25).

The apostles had seen what Jesus taught and did. They were to witness that Jesus is Christ and Lord. They were to witness his death, resurrection, ascension, and his Second Coming. They were to proclaim salvation through repentance and forgiveness of sins in his Name. For them, Jerusalem was the most dangerous place. Judea and Samaria were the places where they would receive severest opposition. The ends of the earth were unknown lands which they had great limitations to go and to live in. Nevertheless, Jesus told them to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Jesus sent them, because, without their witness, people of the world would perish, not knowing God’s saving love. Without their witness, there would be no more witnesses of the Savior and God’s world salvation work wouldn’t continue. From the word “witness” came the word “martyr.” Later, the apostles witnessed to Jesus until all of them except one entered into the glory of martyrdom (Rev 20:4). Through their obedience, Lord Jesus has built his church and we are saved today.

By God’s great mercy, we have received eternal life. We are to witness to Christ Jesus. Unless we witness, the world would soon find no light of life. Lord Jesus wants us to share God’s broken heart for the lost as well as his joy over one sinner who repents (Lk 15:10). Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold (Mt 24:12). Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command” (Jn 15:13-14). Lord Jesus wants us to be his witnesses by serving the people of this generation with his love, his heart, and his sacrifice. If we do so, he will honor us as his friends in his eternal kingdom. 

Second, the power of the Glorified Christ and of the Holy Spirit. Witnessing Jesus challenges the power of darkness, and therefore it involves a spiritual battle. So, Jesus promised to empower his church by the Holy Spirit. What is the power of the Holy Spirit? Most of all, he pours out God’s love into our hearts (Ro 5:5). In God’s love, we can be more than conquerors in all things (Ro 8:37). The Holy Spirit gives us victory over evil spirits and sin (Eph 6:12-13, Ga 5:16). By keeping our purity in the Spirit, we can drive out evil spirits in people through prayer. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit gives us wisdom, boldness, and courage to witness to Christ (Ac 4:31, 5:41-42, 23:11, 28:31). When we witness, the Holy Spirit himself testifies to Jesus with us (Jn 15:26-27). The most amazing thing to see is how the Holy Spirit breaks the hearts of people to repent and become completely new persons.

The power of the Holy Spirit is the power of the glorified Christ. In verses 9-11, Luke recorded the apostles’ witness of Jesus’ ascension very vividly. As the apostles were looking intently into the sky as he was going, two angels said them, “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” God exalted Jesus to be King of the universe. Jesus did not return to his pre-incarnate state, but remains as the Risen Christ to be our King and High Priest. He intercedes for us, so that we may rise from our failures and continue our life of faith (Ro 8:34). The Holy Spirit reminds us of Jesus’ words and guide us into all the truth (Jn 14:26, 16:13). The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus in us by revealing what he receives from King Jesus (Jn 16:15). Jesus said, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Mt 28:20). King Jesus is with us and lives in us through the Holy Spirit (Ga 2:20). The Holy Spirit enables us to have God’s kingdom in Jesus Christ. King Jesus will come to restore all things to the Father (1Co 15:28). When he comes, he will reward each of us according to what we have done for him (2Co 5:10).

In this age of the Holy Spirit and of salvation, there is no more important and precious thing for Christians than to be filled with the power of God and to be Jesus’ witnesses. How can we be filled with God’s power?

In verses 12-14, Luke recorded what the apostles did. After Jesus’ ascension, they returned to Jerusalem and they all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. They denied their plan to go back to Galilee. They laid down their dream of an earthly messianic kingdom. They entrusted the future of themselves, their families, and their nation to God. They refocused their lives to carry out the Lord’s Great Commission. Then they earnestly prayed for what the Lord promised—the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

To be filled with the power of the glorified Lord and of the Holy Spirit, we should first refocus our life. When our hearts are divided by earthly things and worries, we don’t feel happy or satisfied, for the Holy Spirit in us is not pleased. When we give our life to Christ, we do not need to worry about our future. For he will guide our life that leads to eternal glory. The apostles were ordinary Galileans. When they gave their lives to the Lord Jesus and lived as his faithful witnesses, God honored them and put their names on the foundations of the heavenly city (Rev 21:14). King Jesus, the Righteous Judge, will honor each of his faithful witnesses with them for eternal praise and glory. Humanly we are not special people. But God chose us to be King and Savior Jesus’ ambassadors and witnesses. We should always live looking forward to the heavenly city where our names are recorded (Lk 10:20).

When we give our lives to Christ, the Holy Spirit gives us the power of witness for Jesus’ Name. What is the power of witness?  When Jewish rulers threatened Apostles Peter and John, they replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes to listen to you, or to him? As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” (Ac 4:19-20) When the apostles were flogged, they left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name (Ac 5:41). When the early Christians were scattered by persecution, they were not saddened, but preached the good news about the Lord Jesus wherever they went (Ac 11:20). The Roman world was no better than the postmodern world today morally and culturally. But people were changed and the kingdom of God advanced in all the cities where the gospel was preached. When severe persecutions came from the Roman empire, Christians were humanly helpless like sheep to the slaughter. But numerous Christians persevered, looking forward to entering into Jesus’ glory. Then the Holy Spirit empowered them to witness to Jesus through their holy life of love, and even through martyrdom.

Recently I visit several Coptic churches after the Middle East directors’ conference that was held in Cairo, Egypt. Coptic Christians have kept their faith in the midst of persecution and discrimination by the majority of Muslims for the past 1,300 years. At the entrances of their main sanctuary, I saw a statue of Saint George with a display of the scenes of tortures he received. Through this, I could see how Coptic Christians have kept their faith by a martyrdom spirit. Saint George was a high-ranking Roman officer of the imperial guard when Emperor Diocletian ordered execution of Christians. Because of his good influence, the emperor tried to persuade him to deny his Christian faith by many means. One of the things the emperor did was to send a beautiful woman to his room. But the next morning the woman became a Christian and began to witness to Jesus. When nothing prevailed, he let George be tortured by a machine that was specially designed to pierce his body to maximum pains, yet sparing his life. The saint endured the torture until the emperor gave up his hope of subduing him and ordered that he be executed. Among those who were deeply touched by his witness to Jesus was Constantine, a Roman army commander. He became the new emperor and issued a decree that tolerated Christianity in AD 313. It was 10 years after Saint George’s martyrdom. The church won the spiritual battle over the Roman empire, when Christians were given the power of witness for Jesus’ Name.

Next, we should pray for filling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name….” (Jn 14:12-13) What a great promise from our almighty King! We cannot do God’s work, but the Lord does his work through our prayers. The Lord wants us to pray for the filling of the Holy Spirit, expecting great things from God. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not merely an emotional experience. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus (Ac 16:7). When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are filled with Jesus’ heart and Jesus’ love. We are filled with Jesus’ vision and Jesus’ passion. The filling of the Spirit is not a once for all experience. As we totally depend on the Holy Spirit and pray for his filling in us and in our community, we will see many great works of God.

There have always been spiritual revivals in a dark time when there were people who gave their lives to obey the Lord’s Great Commission and prayed. UBF was such a revival. In 1960s, Korea was among the poorest countries of the world. In spite of their country’s poor and dark situation, UBF ancestors began to pray earnestly to obey the Lord’s Great Commission. They decided to send the first overseas missionary to Jeju Island in the southern border of Korea. For this, many of them offered their bus money and walked long distances to school. Others sold their blood to support the missionary. God blessed their obedience and prayer and began to open ways for them to go out to Germany and the United States. In the 1980s and 90s, God gave Korea UBF periods of rapid growth. All UBF chapters fervently prayed for world missions in every meeting. Though Korean staff were poor, they didn’t seek their security, but sent out leaders like the pillars of their ministries as missionaries. Then the Holy Spirit sent out 1,800 lay missionaries to 96 countries, making UBF the second global scale protestant lay missionary movement after the Moravian Missionary Movement that sent out 2,000 lay missionaries in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are many beautiful stories of UBF missionaries and shepherds who poured out their hearts and lives to the Lord like the woman who poured her alabaster jar of perfume on Jesus (Mk 14:3-9).

Through them, the Lord has built beautiful multi-cultural and cross-generational churches in the cities and campuses of the world, and God’s kingdom is advancing. God has raised new generations including our children to be the main force of UBF. And now shepherds and missionaries in Korea, North America, and Europe are beginning to retire from work. Still numerous campuses, cities, and countries of the world are waiting for missionaries and shepherds. This is time for our UBF community to pray for another powerful work of the Holy Spirit for world missions. May the Holy Spirit raise many silver missionaries among our senior members who would go to the 130 countries that are waiting for UBF self-supporting missionaries. The beautiful obedience of the first generation should flow through to the new generations. May God raise many young men and women among our new generations who embrace God’s vision and pour out their hearts and lives to the Lord.

Today, the world is rapidly secularizing. Tolerance and legalization for same sex marriages are now going to the point that each person should determine his or her gender identity according to one’s feelings. The Lord predicted that this kind of godless and wicked end time would come. Then he said, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Mt 24:14). The Lord’s words remind us that this is the time in which the church has more opportunities to preach the gospel. The Holy Spirit will work powerfully through his prepared servants. With our human strength or wisdom, we cannot fight the spiritual battle against the devil’s evil schemes in today’s postmodern and materialistic culture. Apostle Paul said, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2Co 10:4-5) What are the weapons with divine power we have? We have the word of God, which is the sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:17). We have a powerful weapon of prayer. Moreover, we have the promises of power from the Holy Spirit. We have the promise of our glorified King Jesus: “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 

Let’s take the sword of the Spirit and fight the good fight through prayers. The Holy Spirit will give us the power of witness with which Christians have overcame the world. Our Lord Jesus, king of kings, who are with us through his power of the resurrection, will surely give us a victory.

너희가 권능을 받고 내 증인이 되리라

“오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라 하시니라”

사도행전은 초대교회의 역사입니다. 이 책은 또한 영적전쟁의 생생한 기록입니다. 교회는 내외적 도전에 직면했습니다. 그러나 부활하신 예수님의 “너희가 권능을 받고 내 증인이 되리라” 는 약속과 함께 교회는 아름답게 성장했고 승리하며 확장되었습니다. 사도행전의 역사는 지난 2,000여년간 계속되었고, 왕 예수께서 다시 오실 때까지 계속될 것입니다. 아도니람 저드슨 (Adoniram Judson)은 초기 서구 선교사로서 버마에서 많은 난관을 겪었습니다. 그러나 그는 항상 이렇게 말했습니다:  “하나님의 약속들이 밝은 만큼 미래는 밝습니다.” 성령께서 새롭게 예수님의 약속의 말씀을 우리에게 주시고 새해를 밝은 전망을 가지고 시작하게 도우시기를 기도드립니다.  

    1. 부활과 하나님 나라의 영광 (1-3절)  

1-3절은 부활하신 예수께서 승천하시기 전 40일 동안 그의 사도들을 위해 하신 일을 말해 줍니다. 첫째, 부활신앙을 심으셨습니다. 예수님은 사도들에게 확실한 많은 증거로 자신이 육체적으로 살아 계심을 나타내셨습니다. 그의 부활은 예수님이 하나님의 아들이심을 선포합니다 (롬 1:4). 그의 부활은 그가 세상 죄를 위해 죽으신 것과 그를 믿는 모든 자에게 완전한 구속이 온다는 것을 증명합니다. 부활하신 예수님은 죽음을 정복하고 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 받으신 왕 이십니다 (마 28:18). 죽음은 모든 사람들을 지배해 왔던 가장 강력한 원수입니다. 그러나 예수님은 자신의 속죄의 죽으심과 부활을 통해서 그의 모든 백성들을 죽음의 권세에서 해방하셨습니다. 하나님께서는 우리들을 높이사 그리스도와 함께 그의 부활의 권세로 영의 세계를 다스리게 하셨습니다 (엡 2:6). 그의 부활은 우리 몸이 그와 같은 영의 몸으로 부활할 영광스러운 소망을 우리에게 줍니다 (고전 15:49).

둘째, 하나님 나라의 영광스러운 소망을 심으셨습니다. 하나님의 나라는 성경의 주제입니다. 예수님의 첫 메시지는 “때가 찼고 하나님의 나라가 가까왔으니…” 였습니다 (막 1:15). 예수님은 마음이 상한 자들을 싸매시며, 눌린 자들을 자유롭게 하고, 병자들을 치유하셨습니다. 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 선포하시고 죄인들과 소외된 자들을 하나님의 나라의 가족들로 영접하셨습니다. 그의 사역을 통해 개인들과 공동체들에 하나님의 나라가 임하였습니다. 부활하신 후, 예수님은 하나님의 나라가 어떻게 만국 백성에게 임하게 될 것인가에 대해 말씀하셨습니다 (눅 24:47).      

하나님의 나라는 또한 장차 올 새 하늘과 새 땅에 있을 회복된 낙원입니다. 예수님은 사도 요한에게 완성된 하나님의 나라의 비전을 보여 주셨습니다. 그 곳은 하나님의 영광으로 가득 찬 곳입니다 (계 21:11). 그곳에는 하나님께서 빛이 되심으로 밤이 없습니다. 이 세상에서 모든 피조물은 허무한데 굴복되어 생존경쟁 속에서 탄식하고 있습니다 (롬 8:20-21). 그러나 오는 새 세상에는 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니합니다. 우리가 하나님 아버지와 우리 주 예수님의 얼굴을 뵙게 될 것입니다. 생명수 강가에서 생명나무의 과실을 따먹을 것입니다. (계 22:1-5) 우리가 진주로 된 문들을 지나며 정금으로 된 빛나는 길을 걸어갈 것입니다 (계 21:11-21). 거기서 모든 하나님의 백성들이 수 많은 천군 천사들과 하늘과 땅의 모든 피조물과 함께 하나님 아버지와 죽임을 당하시고 영화롭게 되신 왕 예수께 찬송과 존귀와 영광과 권능을 세세토록 돌릴 것입니다 (계 5:9-13).

부활 신앙과 하나님의 나라의 영광스러운 산 소망을 심는 것은 사도들을 위한 예수님의 마지막 제자훈련 과정이었습니다. 부활과 하나님의 나라의 산 소망을 받은 사도들은 이전과 전혀 다른 삶을 살게 되었습니다. 부활과 하나님의 나라의 영광스러운 소망이 그들의 영혼을 밝은 빛과 같이 비추었습니다. 하나님의 크신 긍휼로 우리도 죽음의 권세에서 해방되어 이 영광스러운 산 소망을 받았습니다. 우리는 이 부활과 하나님의 나라의 영광스러운 소망이 항상 우리의 영혼에 빛나도록 해야 하겠습니다.  

    2. 성령의 약속 (4-7절)

사도와 함께 모였을 때, 부활하신 예수님은 그들에게 “예루살렘을 떠나지 말고 내게서 들은 바 아버지께서 약속하신 것을 기다리라 요한은 물로 세례를 베풀었으나 너희는 몇 날이 못되어 성령으로 세례를 받으리라” 분부하셨습니다. (4-5) 분명히 사도들은 예루살렘을 떠나기로 했던 것 같습니다. 예수님은 그들의 유대 종교지도자들에 대한 두려움과 자신의 고난에 함께 서지 못했던 것에 대한 그들의 실패감을 이해하셨습니다. 그러나 예수님은 그들에게 예루살렘을 떠나지 말고 아버지께서 주실 경이로운 선물, 곧 성령을 기다리라고 하셨습니다.

구약시대에는 성령이 특별한 목적을 위해 선택된 하나님의 종들에게 임하였습니다. 예수님은 십자가 위에서 흘린 자신의 피를 통해서 예언되었던 신약시대를 여셨습니다 (렘 31:31-34). 예수님은 우리가 하나님께 나아가는 새로운 살 길을 여셨습니다 (히 10:20). 예수님은 또한 성령께서 아버지께로 부터 제한 없이 우리에게 오시도록 길을 여셨습니다. 성령께서 하나님의 자녀들 안에 오셔서 영원토록 거하시게 되었습니다 (요 14:16). 예수님을 찬송합니다!

그러자 사도들이 예수님께 물었습니다. “주께서 이스라엘 나라를 회복하심이 이 때니이까?” (6) 유대인들은 메시야 왕국을 오랫동안 기다려 왔습니다. 그 메시야 왕국은 성령을 부어 주심으로 시작될 것이라고 예언되었습니다 (요엘 2:28-29). 그래서 예수께서 성령 세례를 말씀하셨을 때 사도들은 흥분하였습니다. 그러나 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다: “때와 시기는 아버지께서 자기의 권한에 두셨으니 너희가 알 바 아니요 오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라.” (7-8) 오늘날 예루살렘에 관한 미국 대통령의 발표 때문에 긴장이 고조되어 있습니다. 예수께서는 이스라엘 나라의 회복을 부인하지 않으셨습니다. 이스라엘에 관한 하나님의 약속들은 하나님의 시간계획에 따라 이루어질 것이라고 하셨습니다. 그리고 예수님은 사도들과 그의 교회에게 가장 중요하고 긴급한 것이 무엇인가 말씀하셨습니다. 그것은 세계의 백성들에게 하나님의 나라가 오게 하기 위해서 성령의 권능을 받고 예수님의 증인이 되는 것입니다.

    3. 너희는 내 증인이 되리라 (8-14절)

8절을 다시 읽겠습니다. “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라 하시니라”  이 약속의 말씀을 통해 왕 예수님은 하나님의 크신 세계 구원 계획의 청사진을 보여주셨습니다. 또한 성령의 시대가 그의 교회의 증언을 통해 모든 사람들을 구원하시는 구원의 시대임을 알리셨습니다. 이 구원역사를 위해 교회에 성령의 권능을 주시는 것입니다. 이 말씀이 우리 주 예수님의 승천 전에 주신 마지막 말씀이기 때문에 두 가지를 함께 생각해 보고자 합니다.

첫째, 멸망해 가는 세상을 위한 하나님의 상한 심정입니다. 구약 시대에 하나님은 이스라엘이 그의 말씀에 순종함으로 거룩한 나라가 되어 하나님의 증인들이 되기를 바라셨습니다 (출 19:6, 사 43:10). 그러나 그들은 불순종하였습니다. 하나님께서 그의 외아들을 약속하신 그리스도요 그의 충성되고 참된 증인으로 세상에 보내셨습니다 (계 3:14). 예수님은 하나님의 진리와 은혜를 증거하셨습니다. 마침내 십자가 위에서 죽으심으로 하나님의 구원의 사랑을 온 세상에 증거하셨습니다. 아들의 순종을 통하여 그의 피를 믿는 모든 이들에게 구원이 임하였습니다.(히 5:8, 롬 3:25).

사도들은 예수께서 가르치시고 행하신 모든 것들을 보았습니다. 그들은 예수께서 그리스도시요 주이심을 증거해야 합니다. 그들은 예수님의 죽으심과 부활, 승천하심과 다시 오심을 증거해야 합니다. 그들은 그의 이름으로 죄사함을 받는 회개를 전파해야 합니다. 그들에게 예루살렘은 가장 위험한 곳이었습니다. 유대와 사마리아는 그들이 극심한 배척을 받을 곳입니다. 땅 끝은 그들이 가고 살기에는 너무 많은 한계가 있는 미지의 곳입니다. 그러나 예수님은 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라고 하셨습니다. 예수께서 그들을 보내신 것은 그들의 증언이 없이는 세상의 모든 사람들이 하나님의 구원의 사랑을 알지 못하고 멸망할 것이기 때문입니다. 그들의 증언이 없으면 하나님의 세계구원의 역사는 중단될 것이기 때문입니다. 증인이라는 말에서 순교자라는 말이 나왔습니다. 후에 사도들은 한사람을 제외하고 모두 예수님을 증거하다가 순교의 영광에 들어갔습니다 (계 20:4). 그들의 순종을 통해 주 예수께서 그의 교회를 세우셨고 오늘날 우리가 구원받게 되었습니다.

하나님의 크신 긍휼로 우리는 영생을 얻었습니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도를 증거해야 합니다. 우리가 증거하지 않으면 세상은 곧 구원의 빛을 찾지 못할 것입니다. 주 예수님은 우리가 하나님의 상한 심정으로 잃어버린 자들을 찾고, 한 영혼이 회개할 때 하나님의 기쁨을 함께 나누도록 우리를 그의 증인으로 부르십니다 (눅 15:10). 이 마지막 때에 불법이 성하므로 많은 사람의 사랑이 식어질 것입니다 (마 24:12). 주님께서 말씀하셨습니다: “사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없나니 너희가 나의 명하는 대로 행하면 나의 친구라” (요 15:13-14). 주 예수께서는 우리가 그의 희생적인 사랑과 심정으로 이 시대의 사람들을 섬기기를 원하십니다. 우리가 그렇게 행하면 주님께서 우리를 그의 영원한 왕국에서 그의 친구로 높여 주실 것입니다.

둘째, 영화롭게 되신 그리스도와 성령의 권능입니다. 예수님을 증거하는 것은 어두움의 세력에 도전하기 때문에 영적 전쟁이 따릅니다. 그래서 예수님은 그의 교회에게 성령의 권능을 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 성령의 권능은 무엇입니까? 무엇보다도 성령께서는 하나님의 사랑을 우리의 마음 속에 부어 주십니다 (롬 5:5). 하나님의 사랑의 권능으로 우리는 모든 일에 넉넉히 이길 수 있습니다 (롬 8:37). 성령님은 우리가 악령들과 죄를 이기도록 도와 주십니다 (엡 6:12-13, 갈 5:16). 우리가 성령 안에서 순결을 지킴으로써 우리는 기도를 통해 사람들 안에 있는 악령들을 쫓아낼 수 있습니다. 나아가 성령께서는 우리에게 그리스도를 증거하도록 지혜와 담대함과 용기를 주십니다 (행 4:31, 5:41-42, 23:11, 28:31). 우리가 증거할 때, 성령께서 우리와 함께 예수님을 증거하십니다 (요 15:26-27). 성령께서 사람들의 마음을 깨뜨리셔서 회개케 하여 전혀 새 사람이 되게 하는 것은 가장 경이로운 일입니다.                 

성령의 권능은 영화롭게 되신 그리스도의 권능입니다. 9-11절에서 저자 누가는 사도들의 증언으로 부터 예수님의 승천을 생생하게 기록했습니다. 예수께서 올라가실 때에 제자들이 자세히 하늘을 쳐다보고 있는데 두 천사가 그들에게 말했습니다: “너희 가운데서 올려지신 이 예수는 하늘로 올라 가심을 본 그대로 오시리라.” 저자는 예수께서 “올려지셨다”고 기록했습니다. 하나님께서 예수님을 만유의 왕으로 높이셨습니다. 예수님은 성육신 이전으로 돌아가시지 않고, 부활하신 그리스도로서 우리의 왕이요 대제사장이 되셨습니다. 주님은 우리가 실패에서 일어나 믿음의 경주를 계속하도록 하나님 우편에서 우리를 위하여 간구하십니다 (롬 8:34). 성령께서는 우리 안에서 예수님의 말씀을 생각나게 하고 모든 진리 가운데로 인도하십니다 (요 14:26, 16:13). 성령은 아들로부터 받은 것을 우리에게 알리심으로 아들을 영화롭게 하십니다 (요16:15). 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다: “내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라” (마 28:20). 왕 예수께서 성령님을 통해 우리와 함께 하시며 우리 안에 사십니다 (갈 2:20). 성령께서는 우리가 예수 그리스도 안에서 하나님의 나라를 누리게 하십니다. 왕 예수께서는 모든 것을 아버지께로 회복하시기 위해 다시 오실 것입니다 (고전 15:28). 그가 다시 오실 때, 우리 각자에게 우리의 행한대로 보상을 주실 것입니다 (고후 5:10).

이 성령의 시대, 구원의 시대에 그리스도인들에게 하나님의 권능으로 충만하여 예수 그리스도의 증인이 되는 것 보다 더 중요하고 귀한 일은 없습니다. 우리가 어떻게 성령의 권능으로 충만할 수 있습니까?  

12-14절에서 누가는 예수님의 승천 후 사도들이 행한 일을 기록했습니다. 그들은 예루살렘으로 돌아와 여자들과 예수의 어머니 마리아와 예수의 아우들과 더불어 마음을 같이하여 오로지 기도에 힘썼습니다. 그들은 갈릴리로 돌아가고자 했던 계획을 부인하였습니다. 그들의 지상 메시야 왕국에 대한 꿈도 내려놓았습니다. 그들 자신과 가족, 그리고 그들의 나라의 장래를 하나님께 의탁하였습니다. 주님의 지상명령을 수행하는데 자신들의 삶의 초점을 맞추었습니다. 그리고 주님께서 약속하신 바 성령의 권능을 받기 위해 간절히 기도했습니다.

영화롭게 되신 주님과 성령의 권능으로 충만하기 위해서 우리는 먼저 우리의 삶의 초점을 새롭게 맞추어야 합니다. 우리의 마음이 세상의 일들과 염려로 나뉘어 있을 때 우리 안에 계신 성령께서 근심하시기 때문에 우리는 행복하거나 만족을 느낄 수 없습니다. 우리가 우리의 삶을 주님께 드릴 때, 우리는 장래에 대해 염려할 필요가 없습니다. 왜냐하면 주님께서 우리의 삶을 영원한 영광으로 인도하시기 때문입니다. 사도들은 갈릴리 촌부들이었습니다. 그들이 주님께 자신의 삶을 드리고 그의 충성된 증인으로 살았을 때, 하나님께서 그들을 높이사 천성의 기초석들의 이름들이 되게 하셨습니다 (계 21:14). 의로우신 재판장이신 왕 예수께서 그의 충성된 증인들을 영원한 칭찬과 영광으로 높이실 것입니다. 우리도 인간적으로 특별한 사람들이 아닙니다. 그러나 하나님께서 우리를 구원의 왕 예수님의 대사들이요 증인들로 택하셨습니다. 우리는 항상 우리의 이름이 새겨져 있는 천성을 기억하면서 살아가야 하겠습니다 (눅 10:20).  

우리가 그리스도께 우리의 삶을 드릴 때, 성령께서 우리에게 예수의 증인의 권능을 주십니다. 예수의 증인의 권능이 무엇입니까? 유대 지도자들이 사도 베드로와 요한을 위협했을 때, 그들이 대답했습니다: “하나님 앞에서 너희의 말을 듣는 것이 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 것보다 옳은가 판단하라. 우리는 보고 들은 것을 말하지 아니할 수 없다” (행 4:19-20). 사도들이 채찍질 당했을 때, 그들은 그 이름을 위하여 능욕 받는 일에 합당한 자로 여기심을 기뻐하면서 공회 앞을 떠났습니다 (행 5:41). 초대교회 신자들이 핍박으로 흩어져야 했을 때, 그들은 슬퍼하기 보다 어디에 가든지 주 예수의 복음을 전파했습니다 (행 11:20). 로마 세계는 오늘날 포스트모던 시대의 세계보다 도덕적으로 문화적으로 결코 낫지 않았습니다. 그러나 복음이 전해진 모든 도시들에서 사람들이 변화되고 하나님의 나라가 확장되어 갔습니다. 로마 제국으로부터 혹심한 핍박이 왔을 때, 그리스도인들은 인간적으로 도수장으로 끌려가는 양들과 같았습니다. 그러나 수많은 그리스도인들이 예수의 영광에 들어갈 것을 바라보면서 고난을 감당하였습니다. 성령께서 그들이 거룩한 사랑의 삶과 순교로써 예수의 이름을 증거하도록 권능을 주셨습니다.

근년에 저는 이집트 카이로에서 열렸던 중동 선교사 수양회 후, 콥틱 정교회 교회들을 방문할 기회가 있었습니다. 콥틱교회는 무슬림의 핍박과 차별 속에서 1,300여년 동안 신앙을 지켜온 그리스도인들입니다. 이들 교회들의 예배실 입구에 세인트 죠지상과 그가 받았던 고문의 도구들이 전시되어 있었습니다. 이를 보면서 콥틱 그리스도인들이 순교정신으로 그들의 신앙을 지켜왔다는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다. 세인트 죠지는 디오클레시안 황제가 기독교인들을 처형할 때 로마군 친위대의 고위급 장교였습니다. 그의 영향력 때문에 황제는 그가 기독교 신앙을 버리도록 여러 방법으로 회유했습니다. 황제가 한 일들 중 하나는 아름다운 여인을 그의 방으로 보낸 것이었습니다. 그런데 다음날 아침 그 여인이 크리스찬이 되어 예수님을 증거하기 시작했습니다. 어떤 것도 실패하자 황제는 살을 찔러 최대한의 고통을 주면서도 생명은 살려 두도록 특별히 고안된 기계로 그를 고문했습니다. 그는 황제가 그를 굴복시키는 것을 포기하고 처형을 명령할 때까지 그 고문을 견디었습니다. 그의 예수께 대한 증거에 깊이 감명을 받은 사람들 중에 로마군의 다른 지휘관 콘스탄틴이 있었습니다. 그는 새 황제가 되어 주후 313년 기독교를 공인하였습니다. 세인트 죠지가 순교한 지 10년 후의 일이었습니다. 그리스도인들이 예수의 이름을 위하여 증인의 권능을 받았을 때 교회는 영적 전쟁에서 로마 제국에 맞서 승리할 수 있었습니다.

다음으로 우리는 성령의 충만함을 받기 위해 기도해야 합니다. 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다: “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 나를 믿는 자는 내가 하는 일을 그도 할 것이요 또한 그보다 큰 일도 하리니….너희가 내 이름으로 무엇을 구하든지 내가 시행하리라” (요 14:12-13). 이는 우리의 전능하신 왕의 얼마나 큰 약속입니까? 우리는 하나님의 일을 할 수 없지만 주님께서 우리의 기도를 통해 그의 일을 하십니다. 주님은 우리가 하나님으로부터 위대한 일을 기대하고 성령의 충만함을 받도록 기도하기를 원하십니다. 성령의 충만함을 받는 것은 감정적인 체험을 하는 것 만이 아닙니다. 성령님은 예수의 영 이십니다 (행 16:7). 우리가 성령의 충만함을 받을 때 예수님의 사랑과 예수님의 심정으로 충만하게 됩니다. 예수님의 비전과 예수님의 열정으로 충만하게 됩니다. 우리와 우리의 공동체가 전적으로 성령님을 의지하고 그의 충만함을 위해 기도할 때 주님께서 우리로 하나님의 많은 위대한 일들을 보게 하실 것입니다.  

주님의 지상명령에 순종하여 기도하는 사람들이 있었을 때 마다 어두운 시대에 영적 부흥이 일어났습니다. 저희 UBF도 그러한 부흥의 하나입니다. 1960년대에 한국은 세계에서 가장 가난한 나라들 중 하나였습니다. 가난하고 어두운 현실 속에서 UBF 조상들은 주님의 세계선교 지상명령에 순종하였습니다. 첫 해외 선교사를 한국 남단의 제주도에 보내기로 하고 선교헌금을 했습니다. 많은 분들이 버스비를 헌금하고 먼 길을 걸어 학교에 갔습니다. 어떤 분은 자신의 피를 팔아 헌금했습니다. 하나님께서 그들의 순종과 기도를 축복하시고 독일과 미국으로 나아가는 길을 여셨습니다. 1980-90년대 하나님께서 한국UBF에 큰 성장을 주셨습니다. 그 때, 한국의 모든 지부들이 모든 모임에서 세계선교를 위해 뜨겁게 기도했습니다. 당시 한국 UBF 스탭들은 가난했지만 자신들의 안정을 구하지 않고 자신들의 사역의 기둥과 같은 리더들을 선교사로 파송하였습니다.  성령께서 1,800명의 젊은이들이 주님께 헌신하고 96개국에 나아가게 하셨습니다. 이로써 UBF가 18-19세기에 2,000명의 평신도 선교사를 파송했던 모라비안 선교운동 이후 두번째 세계적 신교 평신도 선교운동이 되게 하셨습니다. 예수님께 옥합의 향유를 부어드렸던 여인과 같이 많은 목자, 선교사들이 주님께 아름다운 헌신을 드렸습니다.

그들을 통해 주님께서 세계의 도시들과 캠퍼스들에 아름다운 다문화 다세대 교회들을 세우셨고, 하나님의 나라가 확장되고 있습니다. 하나님께서 저희의 자녀들을 포함한 새 세대들이 UBF의 주역이 되게 하셨습니다. 그리고 이제 한국과 북미, 유럽에서 목자, 선교사들이 직장에서 은퇴하기 시작하였습니다. 아직 세계의 수많은 도시들과 캠퍼스들이 선교사들과 목자들을 기다리고 있습니다. 지금은 저희 UBF공동체가 다시 한번 세계선교를 위한 성령님의 강력한 역사를 위해 기도해야 할 때입니다. 하나님께서 저희 시니어 멤버들 중 UBF 자비량 선교사를 기다리고 있는 130개국으로 나아갈 많은 실버 선교사들을 세워 주시기를 기도합니다. 1세대의 아름다운 순종은 새 세대들로 계승되어야 합니다. 저희 공동체의 새 세대 에서 하나님의 비전을 영접하고 주님께 마음과 삶을 부어드리는 많은 젊은 남종과 여종들을 세워 주시기를 기도합니다.

오늘날 세상은 빠르게 세속화하고 있습니다. 동성결혼에 대한 관용과 합법화를 넘어 각 사람이 자신의 정서에 따라 자신이 남성인가 여성인가를 결정해야 한다는 데까지 나아가고 있습니다. 주님께서 이렇게 불경건하고 불법이 성한 마지막 때가 오리라고 예언하셨습니다. 그리고 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다: “이 천국 복음이 모든 민족에게 증언되기 위하여 온 세상에 전파되리니 그제야 끝이 오리라” (마 24:14). 주님은 이 시대에 교회가 복음을 전파할 더 많은 기회를 갖게 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 성령께서 준비된 증인들을 통해 강력히 역사하실 것입니다. 우리는 우리의 지혜와 힘으로 이 포스트모던 물질주의 문화 속에 역사하고 있는 마귀의 간계를 대적하여 싸울 수 없습니다. 사도 바울은 말씀했습니다: “우리의 싸우는 무기는 육신에 속한 것이 아니요 오직 어떤 견고한 진도 무너뜨리는 하나님의 능력이라 모든 이론을 무너뜨리며 하나님 아는 것을 대적하여 높아진 것을 다 무너뜨리고 모든 생각을 사로잡아 그리스도에게 복종하게 하니…” (고후 10:4-5) 우리가 가진 하나님의 능력의 무기가 무엇입니까? 그것은 하나님의 말씀, 곧 성령의 검입니다 (엡 6:17). 기도는 우리가 가진 강력한 하나님의 능력의 무기 입니다. 이에 더하여 우리는 성령의 권능을 주시겠다는 약속이 있습니다. 우리에게는 영화롭게 되신 우리의 왕 예수 그리스도의 약속이 있습니다: “내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라.”.  

성령의 검, 곧 하나님의 말씀을 가지고 기도로써 이 시대의 선한 싸움을 싸워 나갑시다. 성령께서 그리스도인들이 세상을 이기고 승리하게 하셨던 예수의 증인의 권능을 우리에게 주실 것입니다. 그의 부활의 권세로 우리와 함께 하시는 만왕의 왕 우리 주 예수께서 우리에게 반드시 승리를 주실 것입니다.
