Congratulatory Address at the Inauguration Ceremony of the New Korea UBF Director

I thank God for raising UBF for world campus mission and leading us to have today’s ceremony for the leadership succession between the 4th and 5th Korea UBF directors. I would like to express my gratitude to Shep. David Kim who successfully served the important duties as Korea UBF director for the last 6 years after the late Dr. Samuel C. Lee, Dr. John Jun, and Dr. Samuel H Lee. P. David Kim served Korea UBF by diligently visiting its local chapters, fully devoting himself to the opening of the UBF History Museum in 2013 and preparations of annual conferences for Korea UBF staff, lay and student leaders, as well as the 2016 World Mission Report and the Missionaries-Shepherds Conference. For UBF missionaries and shepherds, retirement means "re-tire” --changing tires to continue running. May God continue to use Shep. David and Sarah Kim preciously for Bible Korea and world missions.

I would like to welcome the new Korea UBF director Shep. Moses Lee and congratulate on his inauguration along with all coworkers who are here, all UBF missionaries and native leaders around the world, and UBF international headquarters staff. As we all know, Shep. Moses Lee is a holy man of God. We can see him neatly dressed wherever he goes, even in the mountains and on the beaches. Some would expect austerity from him, but his messages are full of spiritual inspiration and humor. He also sings very well. When he sings pop songs of the past, even the popular singer Na Hoon-A would find him peerless. Women missionaries in the Middle East say that they feel like seeing their own loving father when Shep. Moses visits them. We know that Shep. Moses Lee grew to be such a loving and humble man of God through his beautiful life of obedience to God’s discipline in many hardships by faith. May the Lord provide his beloved servant, Moses Lee, with everything he needs in body and spirit. Through his beautiful co-working with all staff and lay shepherds in Korea, may God continue to bless Korea UBF to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. 

UBF was born as a gospel community of young people who found new life in Christ through Bible studies. As those young people embraced God’s vision and went out as missionaries to 95 countries, UBF has grown to be a global lay missionary movement after the Moravian missionary movement in the 18th and 19th centuries. This growth was possible due to UBF staff, lay shepherds, shepherdesses, and missionaries who devoted their lives to campus disciple-raising ministries and world missions. After 56 years since UBF’s initiation in 1961, many UBF chapters have become an international Christian community that consists of three generations. 

As we face changes and diversity in our community in the midst of the challenges of secularization in our time, what efforts should we make? It is to build up a mature Christian community after the image of the church that has the fullness of Jesus Christ. Our true identity comes from this maturity. For this, Apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesian church, "And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love…we will grow to become in every aspect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ” (Eph 3:17, 4:15). I pray that, whatever we do, Christ’s love may be our motivation, the rule of procedure, and our ultimate goal. Our one to one Bible study ministry originated from the love of God who sees one soul as more valuable than the whole world. Likewise, our discipleship training should be based on God's absolute love and hope for one person. As we focus on ministries, it is easy for us to lose God’s mind and heart. Therefore, we should often examine ourselves before God to see whether we are treating each person in our church community with God's mind and heart or not.

Moreover, a mature Christian community is formed through co-working. I pray that God may continue to guide UBF and all its chapters to build up a loving community, as we remember the early church in which the apostles who devoted themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word and the deacons who administered church affairs worked together, the Jerusalem Council in which apostles and elders sought God’s will together in mutual respect, and the Ephesian church in which a full-time staff, Timothy, and lay leaders, the elders, beautifully co-worked.

Let us persistently pray that God may raise 100,000 Bible teachers and missionaries to reach out to all the cities and campuses in 233 countries of the world. Let’s pray that all UBF members may renew the vision and passion for world missions through the International Summer Bible Conference in Kentucky, USA, that will be held on August 9-12, 2018. May God raise many long-term and short-term missionaries through the 2018 international Summer Bible conference.

저희 UBF를 세계 캠퍼스 선교를 위해 세우시고 오늘 4, 5대 한국 대표 이취임식을 갖도록 인도하신 하나님께 감사드립니다. 고 이 사무엘 목자님, 전 요한 목자님, 이 사무엘 목자님의 뒤를 이어 6년간 한국 UBF 대표의 중요한 직임을 마치고 퇴임하시는 김 다윗 목자님께 감사드립니다. 다윗 목자님은 전국의 UBF 지부들을 심방하시며 섬기셨고 2013년 UBF 역사관 개관, 매년 전국 스탭, 평신도 목자, 학생 수양회, 그리고 2016년 세계선교 보고대회와 선교사-목자 수양회의 성공적인 개최를 위해 심혈을 기울이셨습니다. UBF 목자, 선교사들에게 은퇴는 영어 re-tire그대로 타이어를 갈아끼우는 것입니다. 앞으로 김 다윗, 사라목자님을 성서한국과 세계선교에 계속 귀하게 쓰시기를 기도드립니다.

하나님께서 새 대표로 세우신 이 모세 목자님을 이 자리에 오신 모든 동역자님들과 전세계의 선교사, 현지 목자들과 국제본부 스탭들과 함께 환영하며 취임을 축하드립니다. 이 모세 목자님은 우리가 잘 아는 대로 a holy man of God 이십니다. 어느 곳에서나, 산이나 바다에서도, 정장을 하신 단정한 목자님을 뵐 수 있습니다. 근엄하실 것만 같은데 목자님의 메시지는 진리의 영감과 함께 유머가 넘치고 유행가도 나훈아가 울고 갈 만큼 잘 부르십니다. 중동의 자매 선교사들은 목자님이 오시면 친정아버지를 뵙는 것 같다고 말합니다. 이러한 목자님이 있기까지 하나님께서 사랑하시는 종에게 주시는 연단을 믿음으로 순종하신 아름다운 삶이 있었던 것을 우리는 압니다. 주님께서 사랑하시는 종께 영육간 필요한 모든 것을 공급하시며 모든 스탭, 평신도 목자님들과의 아름다운 동역을 통해서 한국 UBF를 계속하여 제사장나라, 거룩한 백성으로 축복하시기를 기도드립니다.

우리 UBF는 성경공부를 통해 그리스도 안에서 새 삶을 찾은 젊은이들의 복음신앙 공동체로서 태동하였습니다. 이 젊은이들이 하나님의 비전을 영접하고 95개국에 선교사로 나아감으로 저희 UBF는 18-19세기 모라비안 선교운동 이후 세계적인 평신도 선교운동으로 성장하였습니다. 이 성장의 중심에는 학생 제자양성에 삶을 드린 스탭들과 캠퍼스 사역과 세계선교에 헌신한 평신도 목자와 사모들, 그리고 선교사들이 있었습니다. 56년의 세월이 지나 많은 UBF 지부들이 3세대에 걸친 국제 공동체가 되었습니다.

오늘날 시대의 세속화의 도전 속에서 변화와 다양성을 맞는 우리가 힘써야 할 것이 무엇입니까? 그것은 우리 공동체가 그리스도로 충만한 교회의 모습으로 성숙해 가는 것입니다. 우리의 진정한 정체성은 이 성숙에서 옵니다. 사도 바울은 이를 위해 에베소 교회가 “그리스도의 사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어져서 …사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하여 범사에 그에게까지 자랄지라”고 기도했습니다 (엡 3:17, 4:15). 우리들이 무엇을 하든지 주님의 사랑이 동기가 되고 주님의 사랑이 과정이 되고 목적이 되기를 기도합니다. 저희의 일대일 사역은 한 사람을 온 천하 보다 더 귀히 여기시는 하나님의 사랑에 근원합니다. 제자훈련도 한 사람을 향한 하나님의 절대적인 사랑과 소망에 근거해야 합니다. 역사에 초점을 맞추다 보면 자칫 이 하나님의 마음과 심장을 잊기 쉽습니다. 우리는 때때로 우리가 하나님의 마음과 심장으로 지부공동체의 한 사람 한 사람을 섬기고 있는가 자신을 점검해야 하겠습니다.

나아가 성숙한 공동체는 동역을 통해 이루어집니다. 저희 UBF와 모든 지부들이 말씀과 기도에 전무했던 사도들과 봉사하는 집사들이 동역했던 초대교회, 사도들과 장로들이 서로 존중하고 협의했던 예루살렘 공회, 그리고 전임사역자 디모데와 평신도 지도자 장로들이 동역했던 에베소 교회를 생각하면서 아름다운 사랑의 공동체를 이루어 나가기를 기도합니다.

100,000 성경선생과 선교사를 양성하여 이 세대에 233개국의 모든 도시들과 캠퍼스에 복음이 전해지도록 줄기차게 기도합시다. 내년 8월 9-12일에 미국 켄터키에서 열리는 국제여름수양회를 통해 저희 UBF가 선교열정을 새롭게 회복하고 많은 장기 단기 선교사들이 나오도록 기도합시다.
