Message for 2016 World Mission Report

A HOLY NATION

Exodus 19:4-6
Key Verse: 19:5-6a   

“Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”

I thank and praise God who has used UBF for world campus missions and blessed us for the past 55 years. I thank God for all missionaries, native leaders, Korean shepherds and brothers and sisters who have dedicated their lives to God’s calling.  

Today’s passage that we read is God’s covenant with Israel. This covenant contains God’s love and hope for His people and His vision to save all peoples of the world through them. The hope and vision of God flows throughout the whole Bible.

With the rapid changes in this information age, the world is facing a decline in moral values and a strong current of secularization. In order to overcome the realities and challenges of our time, what do we need? We must have passion and spiritual authority that come from God. As we accept God’s great love and hope, I believe God will give us passion and spiritual authority to serve our time. Through today’s words of God’s covenant, may God reveal His love and hope toward us and renew our souls and minds.

I. God’s Deliverance and Love (4)

In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt, they came to the Desert of Sinai. God called Moses from the mountain and gave him His words for the Israelites: “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself” (4).  As God had promised Abraham, God sent Israel to Egypt and raised them to be a great nation (Ge 15:13). Due to the policy of a new Egyptian dynasty, however, they became slaves and suffered. Though they ate steak and pork chops beside cooking pots, their joy lasted for just a moment. God had seen their misery and heard them crying and came down to rescue them (Ex 4:7-8). God extended His mighty arm and judged Egypt with ten plagues. On the tenth plague, God killed the firstborn of Egypt, but He redeemed the descendants of Israel by the blood of the Passover lamb (Ex 12:23). God saved His people and liberated them from their oppression.

God said, “You have seen how I carried you on eagles’ wings.”  It is reported that eagles in Palestine have a wingspan up to 2-3 meters (8-10 feet). An eagle protects its young under its strong wings, and when they grow, pushes them out of the nest. As the frightened eaglet falls crying, “Mom, please help me!” the mother eagle swoops down to catch the eaglet on its wings and soars (Dt 32:11). By repeating the training, an eagle raises its young to be the kings of the birds. In order to transform the Israelites who were weak and sick after a long period of slavery into a holy nation, God began to train them. God led them to the Red Sea, where they were trapped between the sea and the Egyptian army. When they cried out, God divided the water and enabled them to cross the sea as on dry land. In the desert, God produced water for them to drink and provided manna for them to eat (Ne 9:15). How strong and awesome is our God!

By saying, “You yourselves have seen,” God helps His people to remember His grace of deliverance and love. We, too, were slaves of sin. During my college days, I was outwardly an honor student, but inwardly I was enslaved by lust and fear of the future. We were in darkness with unsolvable sins, wounds, inferiority complexes, jealousies, addictions, etc. God saw our misery and heard the cries of our souls and came to rescue us. He redeemed us by the blood of Christ and liberated us from sin and death through His resurrection. How great was the freedom and joy we experienced on the day we met the crucified Lord and were born again! We should always remember the Lord who shed His blood on the cross and the grace of His great salvation. We should also remember how God has carried us on eagle’s wings by protecting us, providing for us, and training us.

II. God’s Covenant and Hope (5-6)

After God reminded Israel of His grace of deliverance, He gave them words of His covenant. Read verses 5-6: “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”  Let’s think about God’s hope for His people revealed in these words in three aspects.

1. God’s treasured possession.

God said, “…out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.” There is nothing that is not the possession of God who created all things. But God chose Israel among all nations to be His special possession. The world chooses qualified and useful people. But God chose Israel, the weakest and fewest among the peoples, who had been slaves. God also chose us to be His special possession solely by His grace (1Pe 2:9). How immeasurable is God’s grace! Here “treasured possession” refers to valuable treasures which a king has acquired and keeps dearly (1Ch 29:3). God has purchased us by the blood of His Son and made us His treasured possession. John 1:12 says, “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” Children are the objects of absolute attention and love. God keeps and protects us like the apple of His eye (Dt 32:10). How great a privilege it is for us to have the right to become children of God? We should accept the noble status of ourselves and our brothers and sisters by faith.

2. A kingdom of priests

God said, “You will be for me a kingdom of priests...”  A priest meets God most closely, sees His glory, and experiences His grace. Therefore, the calling to priesthood is the highest blessing for a human. The duties of a priest are to worship God, intercede for people, and teach God’s words (Lev chap. 9, 10:11). The unsaved peoples of the world are the lost children to God. How painful God’s heart must be as He sees His lost children suffer and perish in in all kinds of sins, crimes and tragedies under the power of darkness! God wanted Israel to be a nation of shepherds and Bible teachers who would lead the peoples of the world to know God and the good news of His salvation. Apostle Peter reminded the Christians in the first century who were suffering under persecution that they were kingly priests, saying, “You are…a royal priesthood…” (1Pe 2:9). In any situation, we should not forget that we are kingly priests who have been appointed by God Himself.

World missions is the heartbeat of God. In the 1970s, we accepted God’s desire and prayed for the peoples of the countries of the world, many of which we had never heard of, kneeling down on the beach of the East Sea of Korea. God has fulfilled our prayers by sending out 1,800 missionaries to 95 countries. Since it is God’s will to save all peoples of the world, God listens to our prayers and He works. As we pray, God will bring a season of Christ to North Korea, the Middle East and China. God is calling missionaries to go to the places where the gospel has not reached, and He will open the ways for us to go out. We should persistently pray for the evangelization of 7,000 major campuses in 233 countries of the world by raising 100,000 missionaries in our generation and our children’s generation.

3. A holy nation

God said, “You will be for me a holy nation.”  God wants His people to reveal His glory by living a life separated from worldliness (Eph 1:14). In this world full of sin and evil, how can we who have weaknesses become a holy nation? God presented the secret in the words of His covenant.: “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”  God promised that, if His people obey His words and keep His covenant, they would be His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

These days materialism and relativism intoxicate people’s mind and value system. Through mass media and internet, people are exposed to an adulterous environment and the temptations of sin. In this atmosphere, many young people’s interests are having a good job, marrying a spouse of their dreams, and enjoying life with material abundance. As their inner persons remain powerless and sickened by sin, however, they suffer much in their family and social lives. Most of all, finishing life in vanity, depression and fear of judgment is the greatest tragedy. History testifies that the civilizations and nations that pursued material abundance and adultery weakened and perished due to the prevalence of sins that grew like a cancer. Satan tempts people to live their short lives for flesh and money that spoil and perish, and thus, leads them to eternal destruction. In our time, we should become watchers and salt and light of the world (Mt 5:13-14). For this we should stay awake. God said, “If you obey me fully…”  The words of God the Creator and Redeemer are full of the Spirit and life (Jn 6:63). The word of God is living; it awakens our soul and spirit and judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Heb 4:12). When we hold on to the word and obey it, the Holy Spirit sanctifies us to put off our old self, which pursues desires of the flesh, and to put on the new self, created to be like God in righteousness and holiness (Eph 4:22-24). We should fight the good fight against the evil spirits of materialism, relativism and sinful pleasure of our times with the word of God, which is the sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:17). We should awaken young people who are intoxicated by the poison of sin with God’s word and help them rise to be holy young people of Jesus Christ.   

In his testamentary message to Israel, Moses said that the words of God are their life and their descendants’ life (Dt 32:47). The reason why UBF has been used as God’s instrument for this time is the love of the Bible and obedience to God’s word. Through the training in Bible study, reflection of, and obedience to God’s word, our members could be shepherds and Bible teachers anywhere, and thus live as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. We must keep the spiritual legacy God has given us, that is, the love of the Bible and obedience to God’s word, until the Lord comesGod also said, “if you…keep my covenant.” Here, covenant can be compared to a marriage pledge between God and His people. In response to God’s absolute choice and love, we make a pledge that we love God and do not put any idol in our hearts. This pledge is summarized in the first and greatest commandment; “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Mt 22:37-38). Discarding God’s covenant and following the world, Israel finally lost the great blessing of God’s calling. But God did not change His hope of raising a holy nation. For this, God gave His only Son over to suffering and death. Before taking up the cross, the Lord prayed earnestly, with sweat like drops of blood falling to the ground (Lk 22:44); “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me” (Mt 26:39). How the Father’s heart must have been torn as He was hearing the cry of His beloved Son! But God did not grant the Son’s request, in order to save us. By giving His life, the Lord established the new covenant for us by His blood (Lk 22:20). Then the Holy Spirit came to dwell in us, so that our hearts may be transformed to love God. God first loved us with all His heart and with all His soul and with all His mind. It is proper for us to love God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind. May each of us keep God’s covenant which the Lord has sealed with His blood by giving all of our heart, soul and mind to God, discarding anything temporary that holds our hearts now. 

What would God want earnestly from us, His beloved children, today? Isn’t it that we become a holy nation after the hope of our Father and serve our times, believing in the Almighty God? In every time, there are difficulties and challenges. But holy people of God have overcome the world and served God’s will by trusting God firmly in any situation. Caleb in the Bible is a good example. The ten leaders who had spied the land of Canaan saw the inhabitants of the land and fell into fear. So they said that they would die like grasshoppers that could do nothing but jumping. But Caleb said, “Do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. The Lord is with us.” (Nu 14:9). God said, “But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.” (Nu 14:24). According to God’s promise, Caleb entered the Promised Land, and at the age of 85, he was full of passion and conquered the hill country where giants were living (Jos 14:10-14). Why did Caleb have a spirit and passion different from others though they all were in the same situation? God said, “My servant Caleb follows me wholeheartedly.” When Caleb loved God and followed Him wholeheartedly, God gave him passion and power to challenge by faith in God Almighty. The Bible reminds us that the real problem is not difficult realities but whether one is going the way of loving God and following Him wholeheartedly or not.

Praise be to God who saved us from sin and death to give us eternal life and the kingdom of God. Thanks be to the Lord, who is interceding for us at the right hand of God to lift us up from our weaknesses and failures with unfailing grace and love (Ro 8:34). We, who are God’s treasured possession, cannot give our new life to the things of the world that spoil and perish. May we devote our precious one life fully to our only eternal God, serving His glorious hope. In today’s materialistic and self-centered world, what are people thirsty for and seeking most? It is true love—the love of Christ. Along with the new covenant, the Lord gave us a new command, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (Jn 13:34-35). May we fully restore our love for God, for God’s word, and for our coworkers so that we may build up a community full of love. As we do so, I believe that God will give us unceasing passion and spiritual authority with which we can serve our times. In one mind and heart, let’s serve the evangelization of the world campuses faithfully until we all receive a crown of righteousness from Him.

거룩한 백성

말씀: 출애굽기 19:4-6
요절: 출애굽기 19:5-6a    

“세계가 다 내게 속하였나니 너희가 내 말을 잘 듣고 내 언약을 지키면 너희는 모든 민족 중에서 내 소유가 되겠고 너희가 내게 대하여 제사장 나라가 되며 거룩한 백성이 되리라.”

지난 55년 동안 저희 UBF를 세계 캠퍼스 복음화에 귀하게 쓰시고 축복하신 하나님께 감사와 찬양을 드립니다. 부르심을 따라 헌신하신 선교사님들과 현지 리더들, 한국의 목자님들과 형제 자매님들을 생각하며 우리 하나님께 감사드립니다.

오늘 우리가 읽은 말씀은 하나님께서 이스라엘에게 주신 언약입니다. 이 말씀 속에는 당신의 백성을 향한 하나님의 사랑과 소망, 그리고 그들을 통해 세상 만민을 구원코자 하시는 비젼이 담겨 있습니다. 이 하나님의 소망과 비젼은 성경 전권에 흐르고 있습니다.

오늘날 세계에는 정보화 시대의 빠른 변화 속에서 도덕적 가치관은 퇴조하고 세속화의 거센 물결이 밀려들고 있습니다. 이러한 시대와 현실의 도전을 극복하기 위해서 우리에게 무엇이 필요합니까? 그것은 하나님으로부터 오는 열정과 영적 권세입니다. 우리가 하나님의 크신 사랑과 소망을 영접할 때 하나님께서 우리에게 이 시대를 섬길 열정과 영적 권세를 주실 것을 믿습니다. 이 시간 하나님께서 언약의 말씀을 통해 우리를 향한 당신의 사랑과 소망을 보여주시고 우리의 심령을 새롭게 해주시기를 기도합니다.   

I. 하나님의 구원과 사랑 (4)

이스라엘이 출애굽한지 석달 째 그들이 시내 광야에 이르렀습니다. 하나님께서 산에서 모세를 불러 그가 먼저 이스라엘 백성에게 전할 말씀을 주셨습니다. “내가 애굽 사람에게 어떻게 행하였음과 내가 어떻게 독수리 날개로 너희를 업어 내게로 인도하였음을 너희가 보았느니라” (4). 하나님께서는 믿음의 조상 아브라함과 하셨던 언약대로 이스라엘을 애굽에 보내어 거기서 큰 민족이 되게 하셨습니다 (창 15:13). 그러나 애굽 신 왕조의 정책으로 그들은 노예가 되어 고통하게 되었습니다. 그들이 가마솥 곁에 앉아 불고기, 삼겹살을 먹어도 기쁨은 잠시 뿐이었습니다. 하나님께서 그들의 고통을 보시고 부르짖음을 들으시고 그들을 구원하러 내려오셨습니다 (출 3:7-8). 당신의 권능의 팔을 펴사 열 재앙으로 애굽을 심판하셨습니다. 열 번째로 애굽의 모든 장자들을 치실 때, 이스라엘 자손들을 유월절 양의 피로 속량하셨습니다 (출 12:23). 하나님께서 그의 백성을 구원하시고 압제에서 해방하셨습니다.

하나님께서 “내가 독수리 날개로 너희를 업어 인도하였다”고 말씀 합니다. 팔레스타인 지역의 독수리는 편 날개 길이가 2-3미터나 된다고 합니다. 독수리는 강한 날개로 새끼들을 보호하고 그들이 자라면 높은 둥지에서 밀어 떨어뜨린다고 합니다. 놀란 새끼가 퍼덕거리며 “엄마, 살려줘요!”하고 떨어지면 어미가 날아 내려와 새끼를 등에 업어 올라갑니다 (신 32:11). 이 훈련을 반복하여 독수리는 새끼들을 새들의 왕들로 키웁니다. 하나님은 오랜 노예생활로 병들고 연약해진 이스라엘을 당신의 거룩한 백성으로 빚으시고자 훈련하시기 시작하셨습니다. 그들을 홍해길로 인도하시고 앞에는 시퍼런 바다, 뒤에는 애굽 군대 사이에 갇히게 하셨습니다. 그들이 부르짖을 때, 하나님께서 물을 갈라 그들이 바다를 육지 같이 건너게 하셨습니다. 광야에서 물을 내사 당신의 백성을 마시게 하고 만나를 내려 그들을 먹이셨습니다 (느 9:15). 우리의 하나님은 참으로 강하고 위대하십니다.

하나님은 “너희가 보았느니라” 하심으로 그의 백성이 당신의 구원의 은혜와 사랑을 기억하도록 도우십니다. 우리도 죄의 노예들이었습니다. 저는 학생 때 겉으로는 모범생이었으나 내면은 정욕과 장래에 대한 두려움에 잡혀 있었습니다. 우리는 죄와 상처, 열등감, 시기심, 중독 등 해결할 수 없는 어두움 속에 있었습니다. 하나님께서 저희의 고통을 보시고 영혼의 부르짖음을 들으시고 저희를 찾아 오셨습니다. 그리스도의 피로 우리를 속량하시고 그의 부활을 통해 죄와 죽음에서 해방하셨습니다. 우리가 십자가에 못박히신 주님을 만나 거듭남을 체험했던 그 날의 자유와 기쁨이 얼마나 컸습니까? 우리는 십자가에서 피 흘리신 주님의 크신 구원의 은혜를 늘 기억해야 합니다. 또한 하나님께서 어떻게 독수리 날개로 우리를 보호하시고 공급하시며 훈련하셨는 가를 기억해야 합니다.

II. 하나님의 언약과 소망 (5-6)

하나님께서 이스라엘에게 구원의 은혜를 깨우치신 후에 언약의 말씀을 주셨습니다. 5-6절을 읽겠습니다. “세계가 다 내게 속하였나니 너희가 내 말을 잘 듣고 내 언약을 지키면 너희는 모든 민족 중에서 내 소유가 되겠고 너희가 내게 대하여 제사장 나라가 되며 거룩한 백성이 되리라 너는 이 말을 이스라엘 자손에게 전할지니라.” 이 말씀에 나타난 그의 백성을 향한 하나님의 소망을 세 가지로 생각해 보겠습니다.

1. 하나님의 특별한 소유   

하나님께서 “너희는 모든 민족 중에서 내 소유가 되겠고” 말씀 하셨습니다. 세상 어느 것이라도 만물을 지으신 하나님의 소유가 아닌 것이 없습니다. 그러나 하나님은 이스라엘을 모든 민족 중에서 자신의 특별한 소유로 삼겠다고 하십니다. 세상은 자격과 유용성을 보고 사람을 택합니다. 그러나 하나님은 모든 민족 중에서 가장 약소하였고 노예들이었던 이스라엘을 택하셨습니다. 하나님께서 우리도 오직 그의 은혜로 당신의 특별한 소유로 삼아 주셨습니다 (벧전 2:9). 참으로 하나님의 은혜는 측량할 수 없습니다. 여기서 “소유”는 왕이 친히 얻어 깊이 간직하는 값진 보배를 가리키는 말입니다 (대상 29:3). 하나님께서 우리를 그의 아들의 피로 사셔서 당신의 보배로운 소유로 삼으셨습니다. 요한복음 1:12절에 “그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니……” 말씀합니다. 자녀는 절대적인 관심과 사랑의 대상입니다. 하나님은 우리를 눈동자와 같이 지키시며 보호하십니다 (신 32:10). 만유의 주, 만 왕의 왕 이신 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세는 얼마나 큰 특권입니까? 우리는 자신과 형제 자매님들의 고귀한 신분을 믿음으로 영접해야 합니다.

2. 제사장 나라

하나님께서 “너희가 내게 대하여 제사장 나라가 되며……” 말씀 하셨습니다. 제사장은 하나님을 가장 가까이서 대면하며 그의 영광을 보고 은혜를 체험합니다. 그러므로 제사장으로의 부르심은 사람에게 최고의 축복입니다. 제사장의 직무는 하나님께 예배하고, 백성들을 위해 중보 하며, 하나님의 말씀을 가르치는 것입니다 (레 9장, 10:11). 구원받지 못한 세계 만민은 하나님께는 잃어버린 자녀들입니다. 잃어버린 자녀들이 어두움의 세력 아래 온갖 죄악과 범죄와 비극 속에 고통 하며 멸망해가는 것을 보시는 하나님 아버지의 마음은 얼마나 아프시겠습니까? 하나님은 이스라엘이 세계 만민에게 하나님을 알게 하고 그의 구원의 기쁜 소식을 전하는 목자들의 나라, 성경선생들의 나라가 되기를 소원하셨습니다. 사도 베드로는 핍박과 고난 속에 있던 1세기 성도들에게 그들이 왕 같은 제사장들 임을 상기시켰습니다 (벧전 2:9). “너희는 왕 같은 제사장들이요…” 우리는 어떤 형편 가운데 서도 자신이 하나님께서 친히 임명하신 왕 같은 제사장임을 잊지 말아야 하겠습니다.  

세계선교는 하나님의 심장의 고동이라고 했습니다. 1970년대 우리들은 하나님의 소원을 영접하고 동해안 해변에 엎드려 이름도 들어보지 못했던 세계 나라들의 백성을 위해 기도했습니다. 하나님께서 95개국에 1,800명의 선교사들을 파송 하심으로 그 기도를 이루셨습니다. 만민을 구원하시는 것이 하나님의 뜻이기 때문에 하나님께서는 우리의 기도를 들으시고 역사하십니다. 우리가 기도할 때 북한과 중동과 중국에 그리스도의 계절이 올 것입니다. 하나님께서는 아직 복음이 미치지 않은 모든 곳으로 나아갈 선교사들을 부르고 계시며, 또한 우리들이 나아갈 길을 여실 것입니다. 우리는 우리와 우리 자녀들의 세대에 10만 선교사 파송을 통하여 세계 233개국의 7,000 주요 캠퍼스 복음화가 이루어지도록 줄기차게 기도해야 하겠습니다.

3. 거룩한 백성

 하나님께서 “너희가 거룩한 백성이 되리라” 말씀 하셨습니다. 하나님은 그의 백성이 세상에서 구별되어서 그의 영광을 나타내는 거룩한 백성이 되기를 소원하십니다 (엡 1:14). 죄악으로 가득 찬 세상에서 연약함을 가진 우리가 어떻게 거룩한 백성이 될 수 있습니까? 하나님께서 언약의 말씀 가운데 그 비결을 제시하셨습니다. “세계가 다 내게 속하였나니 너희가 내 말을 잘 듣고 내 언약을 지키면 너희는 모든 민족 중에서 내 소유가 되겠고 너희가 내게 대하여 제사장 나라가 되며 거룩한 백성이 되리라.” 하나님께서 당신의 백성이 그의 말씀을 순종하고 그의 언약을 지키면 당신의 보배로운 소유가 되고 제사장 나라, 거룩한 백성이 되리라 약속하셨습니다.

오늘날은 물질주의와 상대주의가 사람들의 정신과 가치관을 혼미케 하고 있습니다. 대중 매체와 인터넷 등을 통해 사람들이 음란한 환경과 죄의 유혹에 노출되어 있습니다. 이러한 가운데 많은 젊은이들의 관심은 좋은 스펙을 쌓아 좋은 직장에 취직하고 원하는 이성과 결혼하여 물질적 풍요 속에서 인생을 즐기는 데 있습니다. 그러나 그들의 내면이 죄로 말미암아 무력하고 병들어 있을 때 그들은 가정과 사회생활에서 많은 환난을 겪게 됩니다. 무엇보다도 허무감과 우울증에 시달리다가 심판의 두려움 속에 인생을 마치게 되는 것은 가장 큰 비극입니다. 역사는 물질적 풍요와 음란을 추구했던 문명과 나라들이 암과 같이 만연한 죄 때문에 쇠하고 멸망한 것을 증거합니다. 사탄은 사람들이 짧은 인생을 썩고 쇠하는 육신과 물질을 위해 살도록 미혹하여 영원한 멸망으로 떨어뜨립니다. 이 세대에 우리는 거룩한 백성으로서 세상을 지키는 파수군이요 세상의 빛과 소금이 되어야 합니다 (마 5:13-14). 이를 위해 깨어 있어야 합니다. 하나님은 “너희가 내 말을 잘 듣고”라고 말씀 하셨습니다. 창조주시요 구원자이신 하나님의 말씀은 영이요 생명입니다 (요 6:63). 하나님의 말씀은 살아 있어 우리의 혼과 영을 깨우며 마음의 생각과 뜻을 감찰합니다 (히 4:12). 말씀을 붙들고 순종할 때, 성령께서 우리로 육신을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어버리고 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입게 하십니다 (엡 4:22-24). 우리는 이 시대의 물질주의, 상대주의, 쾌락주의의 악한 영들과 성령의 검인 하나님의 말씀으로 선한 싸움을 싸워야 하겠습니다 (엡 6:17). 죄악의 독소로 혼미하여 지고 죽어가는 젊은이들을 하나님의 말씀으로 깨우고, 예수 그리스도의 거룩한 청년들로 일으켜야 하겠습니다.

모세는 이스라엘에게 준 그의 유언적 메시지에서 하나님의 말씀은 그들과 후손들의 생명이라고 했습니다 (신 32:47). 저희 UBF가 이 시대에 하나님의 도구로 쓰임 받은 이유는 성경을 사랑하고 말씀을 순종한 데 있었습니다. 말씀을 공부하고 묵상하고 순종하는 훈련과 삶을 통해 저희 회원들이 어디서나 성경선생이요 목자로서 제사장 나라, 거룩한 백성의 삶을 살 수 있었습니다. 우리가 저희 UBF에 주신 성경 사랑과 말씀 순종의 영적 유산을 주님 오시는 날 까지 지켜 나가야 하겠습니다.

하나님은 또한 “너희가 내 언약을 지키면”이라고 말씀 하셨습니다. 여기서 언약은 하나님과 그의 백성 간의 결혼 서약이라고 할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 절대적인 선택과 사랑에 응답하여 우리가 지킬 서약은 하나님을 사랑하고 어떤 우상도 마음에 두지 않는 것입니다. 이 서약은 “네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라”는 가장 크고 첫째 되는 계명 속에 요약되어 있습니다 (마 22:37-38). 이스라엘은 하나님의 언약을 버리고 세상을 따름으로 마침내 부르심의 큰 축복을 잃었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 거룩한 백성을 일으키시는 소망을 변치 않으셨습니다. 이를 위해 자신의 외아들을 고난과 죽음에 내어 주셨습니다. 주님은 십자가를 앞에 두시고 땀이 핏방울이 되어 떨어지기 까지 간절히 기도하셨습니다 (눅 22:44). “내 아버지여, 만일 할 만하시거든 이 잔을 내게서 지나가게 하옵소서” (마 26:39). 사랑하는 아들의 부르짖는 기도를 들으시는 하나님 아버지의 마음이 얼마나 아프셨겠습니까? 그러나 하나님께서 우리를 구원하시기 위해 아들의 부르짖는 간구를 허락하지 않으셨습니다. 주님께서 자기 목숨을 주심으로 그의 피로 우리를 위해 새 언약을 세우셨습니다 (눅 22:20). 그리고 성령께서 우리 안에 오심으로 우리의 마음이 변화를 받아 하나님을 사랑하게 하셨습니다. 하나님께서  우리를 먼저 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 사랑하셨습니다. 우리도 하나님을 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 사랑하는 것이 마땅합니다. 이 시간 우리의 마음을 잡고 있는 모든 일시적인 것들을 버리고, 하나님께 우리의 온 마음과 목숨과 뜻을 드려 주님께서 그의 피로 세우신 언약을 지켜 가기 기도합니다.

오늘날 하나님께서 그의 사랑하는 자녀 된 우리에게 간절히 원하시는 것이 무엇이겠습니까? 그것은 우리가 아버지의 소망을 따라 거룩한 백성이 되어 그의 전능하심을 믿고 이 시대를 섬기는 것이 아니겠습니까? 어느 시대나 어려움과 도전이 있습니다. 그러나 거룩한 하나님의 사람들은 어떠한 상황 가운데서도 하나님을 굳게 신뢰함으로 세상을 이기고 하나님의 뜻을 섬겼습니다. 성경의 갈렙은 좋은 예 입니다. 가나안 땅을 정탐한 열 수령들은 그 곳 주민들을 보고 두려움에 빠졌습니다. 그래서 자신들은 그들 앞에서 메뚜기들 같이 튀다가 죽을 것이라고 했습니다. 그러나 갈렙은 “그 땅 백성을 두려워하지 말라 그들은 우리의 밥이라 여호와는 우리와 함께 하시느니라”고 말했습니다 (민14:9). 하나님께서 “내 종 갈렙은 그 마음이 그들과 달라서 나를 온전히 따랐은즉 그가 갔던 땅으로 내가 그를 인도하여 들이리니 그의 자손이 그 땅을 차지하리라”고 하셨습니다 (민 14:24). 이 말씀대로 갈렙은 약속의 땅에 들어갔고, 85세에도 열정으로 충만하여 거인들이 살고 있던 산지를 정복하였습니다 (수 14:10-14). 왜 같은 상황 속에서 그는 다른 사람들과 다른 마음과 열정을 가질 수 있었습니까? 하나님께서 “내 종 갈렙은 나를 온전히 따랐다 (My servant Caleb follows me wholeheartedly)”고 하셨습니다. 갈렙이 온마음으로 하나님을 사랑하고 따랐을 때, 하나님께서 그에게 전능하신 하나님을 믿고 도전하는 열정과 능력을 주셨습니다. 성경은 진정한 문제가 어려운 현실이 아니고 하나님을 온전히 사랑하고 따르는 거룩한 백성의 길을 가느냐 그렇지 않느냐에 있음을 말씀하고 있습니다.

우리를 죄와 죽음에서 구원하사 영생과 하나님 나라를 주신 하나님께 찬송 드립니다. 하나님 보좌 우편에서 우리를 위해 중보 하시며, 한결 같은 은혜와 사랑으로 우리를 연약함과 실패에서 일으켜 세워 주시는 주님께 감사 드립니다 (롬 8:34). 하나님의 보배로운 소유된 우리가 우리의 새 인생을 썩고 쇠하는 세상의 것들을 위해 드릴 수는 없습니다. 우리가 우리의 단 한번 뿐인 인생을 오직 한 분 이신 영존하시는 하나님께 온전히 드려 그의 소망을 섬겨 드리기를 기도합니다. 오늘날 물질적이고 이기적인 세상에서 사람들이 가장 목말라 찾는 것은 무엇입니까? 그것은 참된 사랑-곧 그리스도의 사랑입니다. 주님께서 우리에게 새 언약과 함께 새 계명을 주셨습니다: “서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라 너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라” (요 13:34-35). 우리가 하나님과 그의 말씀에 대한 사랑과 동역자들에 대한 사랑을 온전히 회복하여 뜨거운 사랑의 공동체를 이루기를 기도합니다. 그리할 때, 하나님께서 우리에게 이 시대를 섬길 지치지 않는 열정과 영적 권세를 주실 것을 믿습니다. 우리 모두가 주님의 영광에 들어가 그가 주시는 의의 면류관을 받기 까지 한 마음 한 뜻으로 한국과 세계 캠퍼스 복음화와 제자 양성의 사명을 충성스럽게 섬겨 나갑시다.
