| John 15:9-17 | Friday, July 19 |
We can be Jesus' friend when we share the close personal love relationship with him that he has with his Father. We have a pattern to follow. We remain in his love when we keep his commands. When love is my motive, the work of God brings me deep joy and the type of love that pleases God-self sacrificing love that reflects the costly love of Jesus for us.
The change of relationship from servants to friends is greatly significant because of what friends are able to share (16:12). Friendship with Jesus comes at his initiative. Our appointment is to share in the joy of bearing fruit together with him as we co-work in doing specific tasks he chooses. "In my name" qualifies whatever you ask, for it must be in harmony with Christ's nature. Beyond all tasks, the first command Jesus gives is to love each other. This is the command we must obey in order to grow in a love relationship with Jesus and be useful to him.
One Word: This is my command
