Belize UBF History by M. Moses Chang

¡°But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.¡± (Acts 1:8)

Missionary Jose Ahn visited Belize in 1978 and prayed. In 2007 Missionary Jacob Lee and Moses Chang explored Belize for mission. God opened M. Moses¡¯ heart to the 3rd country mission after retirement vision. He retired 2007 and received missionary training in Chicago and came to Belize August 21st 2008.

Belize is a small country in Central America located east of Guatemala. The land is about size of El Salvador and smaller than Maryland with population of about 300,000. Belize is former British colony and was called British Honduras and gained independence in 1981. Official language is English. Mayan Indians lived before British seamen and their African slaves began to settle. Now the Mayan population is about 10%. African descendants mixed with other races are about 30% and Mestizos 40%, and the population is diverse with Chinese, Indians, Arabs, European descendants. Religion is also diverse. Anglicans and Catholics has have been the majority, but now other Protestants churches grew to be in equal number. Jehovah¡¯s witnesses, Mormons, Seventh Adventists are also visible. There are a Hindu temples, Buddhists, Moonies, Mennonites, (does not belong in this list because it¡¯s a main stream denomination) even the Embassy of Aliens.

University of Belize is the main University in Belize. The main campus is in Belmopan with about 2000 students. Belize City has about 1500 students. M. Moses rented a 2 bedroom apartment in Belize City near UB Business College. He began Sunday worship service by himself and began inviting students to 1:1 Bible study. Alex and Mariceli were the first Bible students. Many students promised but did not show up. One semester there was no 1:1, and M. Moses felt that the ministry hit the bottom and contemplated to go back. But he was encouraged to endure. (Heb 10:36)

On September 2, 2009 M. Sarah joined. They drove their van from Washington to Belize-more than 3000 miles. M. Sarah immediately began campus fishing. Sylvia, the a school nurse began to study the Bible with her. She studied with the apartment security guard and a few students. Many students who promised did not show up and discouraged her. But Kellie a business student opened her heart and began to study faithfully. We tried to learn the reason why they do not keep their promises. Is there any religious or cultural influences?

However, January 2010, in 2 weeks God sent 14 students to study the Bible. It was amazing work of God. M. Sarah often studied 4 1:1 a day. God answered our payer for doubling up 1:1 numbers and Sunday worship attendants. God answered our prayers with many 1:1s. We kept our prayers for Sunday worship attendants. We had 2 attendants, but God sent short term missionary Landry Hyousseu from Washington and one student Onando St. Bernard to our worship service on June 6. We are praying for summer ministry and Latin America international Bible Conferences. Many students went home. But some are continuing 1:1—Richard, Dillon, Kellie, Onando, Sylvia, Kimisha, Alex and Jena (New). Some are writing testimonies and preparing to attend Mexico International Bible Conference. We have DB prayer meeting at Sylvia¡¯s office. We started in March with Sylvia and Richard, and now Landry and sometimes Dillon attends. We are praying that God¡¯s kingdom may come to UB and Belize. May God raise one Abraham of faith and twelve disciples of Jesus by 2013.
