Brunei Mission Report and Prayer Topics

Ask and it will be given to you

"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.¡± (Lk 11:9)

Part I. Annual Review of 2009

1. Ministry through Key Verse 2009

My key verse of year 2009 was ¡°Restore your first love.¡± Through the Asian Directors Conference 2009, I realized and repented that my heart for Jesus was cold and hard. That was the more serious problem to me than having no tangible results of the ministry in Brunei. I also realized that the only way to survive spiritually In Brunei, a Muslim country, is to keep my heart burning with love for Jesus. I got easily depressed when I thought of the unfavorable situations in Brunei, but I could recover myself and renew spiritual strength by meditating on Jesus¡¯ love and grace for me. It was I who spent most of the time with the children since my coworker, worked in the N. Being with children was much less stressful than it used to be, and I got also less annoyed with my children and coworker. We started a family prayer meeting every Wednesday evening. In the meeting, we praised God with songs and prayed together. I tried to make my family and myself happy in Jesus. Having no visible results of the ministry, I am thankful to God because I could learn and follow Jesus with a pure love and motivation.

2. Personal Bible Study

During the last year, I had studied Genesis, Ephesians and Romans and prepared Sunday messages with them. But I did not try to dig the well of words deeply by myself. Instead, I copied messages from others and modified them, just thinking of two attendants – my coworker and I. Also, I did not sincerely study 1:1 with my coworker. As a Bible teacher and messenger, I should have studied the Bible and dug deeply into the word of God. I repent of my negligence with pain and sorrow.

3. Ministry of Inviting to 1:1 Bible Study

There is one pastor of Brunei citizenship whom I got to know since 2008. He ministers a small congregation, and he tries to give spiritual encouragement to us whenever possible. The pastor gave me the opportunity to lead a group Bible study with several young office workers. We met every Thursday and studied Bible at each house of the group in turn. It was challenging to me but gave me a chance to think of the ministry for S. in Brunei. Until then I thought only of M. Muslim ministry, though many people around advised us that it could not be possible. We are praying for Y., P., W. and A., who are non-Muslim, to be steady Bible students.

4. Bible Academy and Conference

We did not try to hold any Bible Academy and Conference last year because we had no steady Bible students. Instead, I had opportunities to join two different Bible Academies held by two different local churches, respectively. The Bible Academies were held at M., one of the big towns in S., M., 2 hours away from Brunei by car. There were many participants from Brunei who drove through the border between Brunei and M. to participate in the Academies. I realized that even in Brunei there are God¡¯s remnant that want to hear God¡¯s words. Through this I could have a vision and faith to establish the gospel ministry and raise Jesus¡¯ disciples even in Brunei.

5. Self Support and Improvement in Local Languages

My coworker has been working in the N. for 11 years. So far she has financially supported the family, but she has got spiritually tired by all the work for a long time and wants me to take over the financial support for the family. I have been studying at U., the only U. in Brunei, completing First degree and Master degree in N. now.

I am planning to set up an educational business such as a tuition school or a children¡¯s book rental service, while doing Ph. D. as a part time student.

Brunei is a multilingual country. The national language is Malay, but English and Chinese are also widely used. We used to take lessons in M. from a private tutor, but we have had the Sunday worship service in English and could not put aside English for the ministry of campus students. In this way, we could not concentrate on either Malay or English. We realized that our languages would not improve without a plan and lack of concentration. Now, we are at the point of adding one more language to these languages, that is, Chinese. We need a clear and strategic direction and plan for mastering local languages. We pray that we may improve our language skills of Malay and Chinese up to a practical level, and of English to the level high enough to help campus students sharply with God¡¯s words.

6. Ministry of Co-working and Raising and Educating Children

I am thankful to God for keeping my house church from any troubles during the last year. My three children have attended the Sunday worship service in a Chinese church, learned God¡¯s words and made friends there. I have transferred them from a general school to a C. school so that they may have C. friends and learn C. Now, they are learning three languages – English, Chinese and Malay along with Jawi, which is an adapted Arabic alphabet for writing the Malay language at the same time. I pray that by studying at the Chinese school they may grow up to be second generation missionaries, who have a missionary spirit and vision to serve Chinese peoples in the South East Asia.

7. Asia and World Mission: Regional Co-working and Guest Inviting

I was invited as one of speakers to 2009 Indonesia United SBC. I was greatly encouraged by God¡¯s words through the conference. I was also personally blessed to renew hope of a heavenly kingdom and missionary spirit, while preparing the message with Act 1:8.

8. Special Thanksgiving Topics

I am thankful to God for my completion of Master degree, which had lasted 4 years.

Part II. Vision and Strategy for 2010

1. Key Verse and Prayer Topics for 2010

My key verse for 2010 is Luke 11:9. "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.¡±

So far, I have done nothing except for being in a Muslim country. But holding on to the key verse 11:9, I pray to do something for the gospel ministry even in this Muslim country. Moreover, I pray to proceed to find a suitable business opportunity for self-supporting. My prayer topics for 2010 are as below.

1. Ask, seek and knock for the gospel ministry among non-Muslim
2. Steady 1:1 Bible Study with Y., P., W.
3. Find a suitable business opportunity for self-supporting

2. 2010 Agenda for Bible Academy and Conference

1. Summer Bible Conference: 6 - 8 Aug.
2. Christmas Worship Service: 19 Dec.
3. 2010 Strategy for 1:1 Bible Study and Doubling Ministry of Making Disciples

We pray to have 4 teams of 1:1 Bible study a week – each of us for 2 teams

4. Special Prayer Topics and Strategy

10 years have passed since I started the Brunei mission. Coming up to 10 years, I pray that we may prepare a firm foothold to proceed to Malaysia after raising one Abraham and Sarah in Brunei. For this vision I take a 10 year verse with Psalm126:5-6.

¡°Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.¡±

This year is a starting one for coming 10 years. I pray to scatter seeds of the gospel ministry, crying and overcoming fatalism within me.
