Update on Johannesburg Ministry by Mercy Lee

Update on Johannesburg Ministry

We are praying for the European International Summer Bible Conference. Missionary Sarah and his nephew Kyungduk will attend the conference. Please pray for them to meet Jesus deeply and be born again. Missionary Andrew was about to get a job, but the company asked him to work on Sundays and he rejected the offer.

This semester I wanted to go a campus to invite students to Bible study with all my heart as my love for God. It has been 10 years since my family came to South Africa. I began to have a sense of problem when our Sunday worship service numbers remained in the 30s. Missionary Little Sarah met Jesus two years ago, but she became difficult recently. When she said that she would leave me, my heart was broken and sad. From that time on I started nightly prayer. Then God broadened my vision personally. I have been proud thinking that I prayed a lot. It is winter here and I will most likely fall asleep if I pray inside. So I pray outside walking in the yard. I confess that prayer is the most difficult thing to do. However without prayer and without God I cannot stand any longer.

Then God began to send sheep. One semester, which was about two months long, I had 13 new Bible students. During the exam period, I asked one student to study one to two due to the busy schedule. But the person said no and rescheduled in order to study one to one instead. One student from the Ivory Coast in Middle Africa also loved the word of God and came to study one to one during the exam period. I met a girl student during fishing, but could not keep the appointment. Two days later while I was fishing on campus, she came and asked me why I didn¡¯t come and asked me to teach her the Bible. So we began Bible study that week. It will take forever to mention thirteen of them all in this way. The work of the Holy Spirit is so amazing and mysterious.

Now in Johannesburg we have 43 one-to-one Bible studies. This weekend all the students go home after the final exam. This weekend we will have Bible study for three days for leaders and six freshmen students. This year our prayer topic is to have 50 Bible students attending our Spring conference. The new semester will begin in the middle of July. I believe that God will send 50 sheep if I work hard day and night. I believe that God will bring to completion what he has begun already.

Our Spring conference will be held from August 29 to 31. The first lecture is titled, ¡°If You Do Not Wear the Lord¡¯s Wedding Clothes¡± by Sh. Gideon based on Matthew 22:1-14. The second lecture is ¡°Elijah Fought for God¡± by Jane or Pace on 1Kings 17, 18. The third lecture, ¡°When the Holy Spirit Comes on You¡±, will be by Brother Nelio on Acts 1:1-18.

As a special lecture we want to learn about student evangelization movements. And we would like to bring an outside speaker. For this we need help. Please send us a good speaker from Chicago or another part of the U.S. Also four of our brothers and sisters will prepare a symposium about successful student gospel workers including Dr. Samuel Lee, Mother Sarah Barry, and the Cambridge seven.

The location is already confirmed. We found a very cheap place for 200 people with a lighting system. We will hire a person to cook for us during the conference in order to save money. We found a person who has experience cooking for 200 people. Everything is ready. I pray a lot and work hard in order to double the number of Sunday worship service in 2009. I believe that one committed person is better than a crowd of 1000 uncommitted people. Though I feel alone, Missionary Andrew is with me and he became a man of much prayer. Also Missionary Hannah is with me, and she encourages me.

Thank God for his grace to our family by opening our spiritual eyes. Thank God for saving my life twice from car accidents. Thank God for healing me from breast cancer through the help of Shs. Kyunghee (of Kyungsung Center) just before I was to undergo a mastectomy. God also called me for world mission. When I visit sheep, they introduce me to others as their mother. God is really my father.

Currently Sh. Nomlando receives training, but because he always goes around crying, the brothers ask me not to rebuke him too much. But after rebuking him I also visit him personally and comfort him by buying him gifts. Shp. Joy left us temporarily in order to serve her mother who opened her own church with three adults and 20 children, but there is a sign that she would come back. She is preparing a three- page report on Mother Barry¡¯s life story.

Hamprey has been studying the Bible for six years and this year he broke his relationship with his girlfriend. Now he serves one person through Bible study faithfully and serves the Sunday sing-along. He will take an oath as a shepherd this year. Now without having one-to-one no one will be raised as a shepherd. Brother Nellio is a worship leader. He has changed since he realized that he hadn¡¯t grown spiritually at the last September conference. When this one person changed, the worship team came to life and the whole worship service environment became lively. Our six-person worship team meets regularly to practice on Saturdays. They use drums, a keyboard, and a guitar. Two or three people lead African worship songs and later one person leads two western style songs. It is very good.

How can I repay you for always praying for Johannesburg ministry? I can only serve and love God more with all my heart. God gave me a gift called passion. So in the past my shepherdess told me how I couldn¡¯t live without God¡¯s mission. I pray that I may use this passion for the kingdom of God.
